Chapter 36 - LIGHTNING

NINA

Soulmates.

My mind cannot stop thinking about it. As a human, the word soulmates gives a different meaning, a romantic vibe. But as a mage, it's purely about power and magic, no strings attached.

But I lived most of my life as a human and being soulmates gives me so many ideas that Ren would be pissed. But I can't help it. This was what I have known to believe, and thinking otherwise takes a lot of effort for me.

"Sylvia!" Ren called as she unleashed a violent lightning storm in the middle of the clearing.

Ren and Apollo took turns providing us a shield, but our hair stood on end just by the electricity coursing in the air. Sylvia's power is goddamn terrifying. I don't think a single minotaur or manitcore could survive our attack power with just Apollo and Sylvia.

"Sylvia!" Ren called once again. I now noticed Sylvia's whole body is glowing in a menacing purple shade. I have goosebumps all over, a foreboding sense enveloping my whole being.

"Sylvia!" It was Apollo's turn to call. "Babe, stop it. We're going to get toasted in here!"

Her magic is getting haywire? Oh my gods, what are we to do? What can I do to help?

Sylvia's body convulsed in front of us, yards away. Her magic, eating up her whole system. Her magical spirit nowhere to be seen.

"What is happening?" I asked Cellon who was beside me.

Cellon's face was grim, "The downside of such powerful magic. All lightning mages were dubbed as the most powerful ones ever in history. But all of them suffer from the same consequence, their magic getting out of hand."

"Where is her magical spirit?"

"Nowhere to be seen. This isn't Sylvia's nor her magical spirit's magic. It is now getting eaten by the lightning magic surrounding us. You should know, all our magic are from nature. What we do is we harness the magic around us, the one we are in affinity with. In the case of lightning mages, lightning is very hard to control. When they get too much, this would be the result."

"But how - "

"I'm sure Sylvia knew that she could take that amount but maybe due to the new surrounding magic, it arrived to this."

I shook my head. I still have to learn a lot from this world. Suddenly, the lightning cracks stopped. I looked at where Sylvia was standing and saw how she crumpled to the ground. My hand found my mouth to cover my shock.

Ren and Apollo ran while Ling warped near Sylvia. Cellon and I followed. What I saw shook me to my core. Sylvia's whole complexion was as white as a tissue paper. Her breathing very fast. Cellon immediately knelt in front of her.

"This is magic overload," Cellon said while doing his magic on her. "What I need to do is siphon the excess lightning magic from her system. But I need something to insulate it or else that magic would trigger the remnant lightning magic in the air."

"We have rubber mats inside the house," I said immediately.

Cellon nodded and replied, a hint of urgency in his voice, "Please get it as soon as possible."

I looked at Ling and Ren. Ling opened a warp step just outside the house. Ren and I walked through it and ran up inside. I navigated to the basement, with Ren and Ling in tow.

Sure enough, the rubber mats we used with my grandpa during trainings was still here. Ren and Ling helped me carry the mats and Ling warped us directly to the outside.

Cellon's face was drenched in sweat but I could see his relief when we brought the mats.

"Create a makeshift box with the mats. I'll channel the excess magic into the rubber box and Ling, I want you to warp the contents of the box into the sky. It would probably create a lightning storm, but it is better there than here."

Cellon said that in one breath, making us realize the gravity of the situation. We set out immediately to the task, Apollo helping us achieve the rubber box. As soon as we finished, Cellon placed his other hand in the box and the other holding Sylvia's very, very pale hand.

I could see the lightning magic flowing from Sylvia, through Cellon to the box. Cellon was holding the convulsions in to finish siphoning. Ling was awaiting for Cellon's command.

It was excruciating to watch. Cellon was really in pain but he held on to help Sylvia. I don't know what's supposed to happen if Cellon weren't here but I could feel that it would probably be very bad.

"Now!" Cellon exclaimed through gritted teeth.

Ling immediately made a warp step from the box to the sky miles and miles away. At the top of the warp step, dark clouds formed. The air smelled like any day when a strong storm is approaching. I shivered. Lightning magic is really scary.

I looked back at Sylvia. Sylvia's cheeks have red tinges already, although Cellon's was not a good sign. He collapsed right after the first drop of rain hit my nose, a small hint of electricity racked my body.

"Ling!" I called for him. "Let's get inside! The rain is charged!"

Ling snapped at me and opened a warp step. Ren carried Cellon and Apollo carried Sylvia. We ran through the warp steps and reached inside the house in the nick of time.

Then came the torrential rain.
