Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Light and Prayer

I slowed down.

[Hey, why don't you teach me more about how to use light magic?]

Korven looked at me in surprise. [Huh?]

I came to a proper stop and he hopped off, circling around to look at me.

[Well I get how the other four elements work. Earth can be used to make walls and stone spears, if I had it. I could use water to freeze, create ice and manipulate it or create water.]

'Well I'm still working on that water part but I'm making a lot more progress. I can actually manipulate moisture at least to change humidity, though I'm still working up to making water whips or shields and such.'

[Basically water, air, earth, and fire all make sense to me. I get how they can be used in a basic way in magic, to attack or defend or whatever. But light and dark? I don't get it.]

[Can you explain?]

I shook myself out, kinda like how a dog or cat shakes themself after getting wet.

[Well what examples do I have of light and darkness? Light is how I can see, darkness is when I can't. So by that logic, using light magic I can affect what people see, using darkness I can blind them to certain things.]

I rolled my eyes in a very exaggerated fashion.

[But instead, darkness somehow eats away at everything like it's void-oh that would make sense-but light can heal. Why can light heal? Does sunlight heal me? No, so why would light magic?]

Korven interrupted. [So THAT'S why you thought I could make illusions... actually I kinda want to experiment with that now. Illusions which hide the darkness that consumes the enemy.]

[...that's scary.]

[Says the dragon able to make craters as a hatchling.]

I stayed silent for a moment.

[Fair enough.] I said with a shrug.

[The point is that in nature I can see how the 4 elements work, I can understand why their magic works that way cause it makes sense with what they do in nature!]

I continued on, [meanwhile light and darkness don't make that kind of sense to me! Maybe darkness is the void of space rather than actual darkness, meaning it's actually emptiness as magic, but I don't have darkness magic to experiment with!]

Korven suddenly spoke. [Oooooh... I get it... you misunderstand what light is! Light isn't just that stuff that les you see, that's just a part of it.]

'...no. No that is light. That is EXACTLY what light is-'

Of course it's at this moment that I remember the goddess saying that the laws of physics were MOSTLY the same in this world.

Mostly.

Light being different in definition? To a higher trans-dimensional being, such a change would mean nothing at all.

[So the reason I can't understand the limits and abilities of light magic is because I don't understand what light actually is.]

Korven shrugged. [Sounds like it, yeah.]

[Well that's annoying-]

"That's twice now that I'm saved by your power. Thank you, young godling."

The voice of that human... Kire?

[Did you hear that?!]

Korven looked at me with some concern. [No...?]

"Thank you for my life."

A rush of energy, like caffeine and adrenaline and some REALLY GOOD DRUGS hit me, a pleasurable wash of just...

Okay don't laugh. But uh... I can best describe it as a wave of "good vibes".

Korven took a step back as pure white energy, soft and pure with feathery like edges lit up from me, like I was a lightbulb for a split instant as I breathed in a deep, satisfied sigh.

Then the light faded, and he stared at me.

[What the FUCK?]

[Mmm... uh... I...] I slowly pieced together my thoughts.

[I just heard the voice of a human I saved... thanking me?]

Korven could not have had more of a "are you high?" kind of expression.

Eventually we came back to the topic of light magic.

As noon hit, the sun shone down on me running, fusion magic powering me at high speed as I went.

On my back was a raccoon lit up by golden light, and random bits of light magic, spheres and cubes and rays of light intertwining and shifting.

He was practicing and I was seeing what light magic could do on its own... while moving.

Not terribly efficient, but this way we didn't waste time.

I remembered the shards of "glass" light created in my star and tried to understand what made that become the appearance light magic took on.

[Hey we're coming up on that mountain soon. You want to go around it?]

Huh? Why can't I just blast over it with air fusion? I'm not going to get tired so it would actually be faster.

[Why?] I asked Korven.

[Its infested with fallen, with the human town nearby constantly at war with them but unable to push them back. It's an unnecessary risk.]

I slowed down to a stop and yet again he jumped off to continue talking properly(you try focusing your thoughts on a conversation while sprinting and avoiding objects in the way!)

[Fallen?]

[Monsters. Failed awakenings, creatures twisted by magic or species of magic without mind, Fallen from intelligence. Not to be confused with Chaos.]

...okay I almost don't want to ask...

[What is a Chaos?]

Korven stopped pacing to look me dead in the eye. [Not a. The. The Chaos can exist in multiple bodies, but it's all one thing.]

[Its a hivemind?]

Korven dryly laughed, or the damn closest to one I've ever heard a raccoon make.

[I've never heard anyone refer to the Chaos as even having a mind, so I wouldn't know.]

Okay...

[Korven, I just got one question.]

[Yeah?]

[WHY DID YOU NOT MENTION THIS TILL NOW?!]

[...it's common knowledge.]

[AND I'M A HATCHLING!]

Korven spluttered for a second. [THEN ACT LIKE IT! I'm not going to think of you as a hatchling that I should explain basic concepts to when half the time you act older than I do!]

...okay yeah I guess you wouldn't think to explain shit to someone who talks and acts like they ought to already know.
