Chapter 1 - The Action-Packed Book

Calvin Bradford looked at the action-packed book in his hands and felt shocked.

He walked over to the window and reflected on his creepy surroundings. He had always hated grand New York with its plain, pongy parks. It was a place that encouraged his tendency to feel shocked.

Then he saw something in the distance, or rather someone. It was the figure of Sarah Baker. Sarah was a clever student with blue eyes and blonde hair.

Calvin gulped. He glanced at his reflection. He was a calm, smart, tea drinker with black eyes and spiky hair. His friends saw him as a wide-eyed, weak person. Once, he had even saved an injured bird that was stuck in a drain.

"What is she doing here! I thought that I already made things clear between us"

But not even a calm person who had once saved an injured bird that was stuck in a drain was prepared for what Sarah had in-store today.

The clouds danced like playing dogs, making Calvin, not at ease.

As Calvin stepped outside and Sarah came closer, he could see the wonky glint in her eye.

Sarah gazed with the affection of 1817 unstable pleasant pigeons. She said, in hushed tones, "I love you and I want your love."

Calvin looked back, still fingering the action-packed book. "Sarah, I just don't need you in my life anymore," he replied.

They looked at each other with sad feelings, like two kooky, kittens talking at a very grateful funeral, which had jazz music playing in the background and two popular uncles walking to the beat.

"Why did you become so cold Calvin, you used to be such a better person," she said in an emotional tone.

"So why did you reject me back then when we were freshmen in high school, I used to love you so much and I would have done anything for you but you didn't even give me a proper response," he replied with piercing eyes.

"I'm very sorry, Calvin. At that I already had-"

She didn't even finish her sentence before Calvin interrupted her and yelled.

"I KNOW, YOU ALREADY HAD A BOYFRIEND" then he smiled and looked at Sarah with cold eyes.

"But where is he now? I was the one who suffered the most while you two were having fun, how foolish I was. When he had done with you, you remembered that there was a person who truly loved you. That person was me " he growled.

"I realized that he used me, I was blind and I apologize. I was wrong. Please, Calvin, believe me." she begged him.

"Is it the truth or is it because of my recent achievements, is it because I became a famous writer. Women are all the same, once you've acquired some money, they will naturally come to you. This is the reason you have chosen him over me, it's all because of this damn money" he took some money from his pocket and throw it in the ground.

"Please Calvin, forgive me. I really have something to tell you about him" She begged him.

"Sarah Baker, Like I said before. I don't need you in my life anymore" he said coldly then he turned back.

Suddenly, Sarah took a knife from her pocket, lunged forward, and tried to stab Calvin in the heart.

"YOU LEAVE ME NO CHOICE IF I CAN'T HAVE YOU NOBODY WILL." she yelled.

Sarah's blue eyes trembled and her fingers wobbled. She looked anxious, her emotions ran wild.

"(She is an unstable person, I have to knock her out then call for help)." he thought. Quickly, Calvin grabbed her wrist and took the knife from her hand by force and brought the book down on Sarah's skull.

Then she let out an agonizing groan and collapsed onto the ground. "(What a dangerous girl, she could have killed me if I made a mistake)." he thought.

Calvin Bradford went back inside, he put down the knife in the table, made himself a nice cup of tea and he called an ambulance.

When Calvin came back to Sarah there was blood surrounding her, Calvin gazed at her with shock. Sarah was dead.

"What the..." he was shocked "NO NO NO NO NO, I'M DREAMING, IT MUST BE A DREAM!! I DIDN'T... WANT... THIS... TO... HAPPEN... I.. I.."

*ooogah-ooogah* as the ambulance approaching the scene Calvin is lost in his thoughts.

"She is dead from blood loss caused by stabbing." the paramedic affirmed after checking Sarah's body several times.

"WAIT, WHAT?!" Calvin shouted.

"The victim has been stabbed, we are dealing with a murder or suicide. It's up to the local police to investigate, I'll go call them" the paramedic reaffirmed and went to notify the local police by a call.

After twenty minutes, the police arrived. As soon as they stepped out of their vehicles, they started securing the crime scene. Then a white person wearing black jeans and a silver jacket. "Calvin Bradford?" he asked with a confident voice.

"Yes, I'm Calvin Bradford," Calvin replied with an almost empty voice.

"I'm detective Brian Freeman, you are retained for questioning" he replied.

After several hours of questioning...

"So Calvin Bradford, you are a 22 years old student who studies at New York City College of Technology, a writer who wrote a best-seller from his first attempt and heavily tea drinker. You don't live with a family nor you have relatives and you only have one friend."

The detective summed it up while reading the information he wrote in his notebook.

"The victim came to you at 2:00 PM and you have met in front of your house, you got into an argument with her, she has threatened you with a knife, you knocked her unconscious, called an ambulance and when you went back to her, she was dead. And nobody was present nearby all the time."

"Yes, that what happened," Calvin assured

"One last thing, what is your relationship with the victim?" The detective asked.

"We were classmates in high school." He responded.

Then the detective closed his notebook and talked "Thank Mr. Calvin Bradford for your cooperation, we will continue our investigation in the crime scene." and he walked away.

Calvin sat after the questioning and went lost in his thoughts, he believed that he was the cause of Sarah's death, he just wanted to make her regret her decision. But what he feared the most is the fact that the possibility of murder might be considered because of the way Sarah died.

A person arrived and went toward Calvin.

"Why make a long face, you are thinking too loud, I can hear everything! Make yourself a tea first." The person announced.

"You're probably right, Eric."

Eric Robles was the only friend Calvin had, a best friend you can say, he was a 22 years old attorney at law. He was kind and reliable, but he was short-tempered. Physically, he is in pretty good shape. He is tall with chocolate skin, black hair, and brown eyes. Eric and Calvin knew each other since primary school, they were like twins, sharing happiness and sadness together. But compared to Calvin, Eric was more successful and talented, born into a wealthy family, a reputed lawyer who never had lost a case before, engaged with a beautiful woman with a strong background, and a very famous writer. Actually, it's because of Eric that Calvin got into writing. They were as close as brothers but deep down in Calvin's heart, jealousy had always been lurking.

So that what happened! You are not at fault, Sarah wasn't a good person, to be honest." He declared.

"What do you think about this situation, is it a suicide or a homicide?" Calvin asked.

"Do you really think that I need to answer such an obvious question, even a monkey can figure this out," Eric responded.

"The killer must have stalked her and waited for the perfect moment to strike. Otherwise, I don't know any other possibility" Calvin suggested.

"Expand your mind, Calvin. Maybe someone passed by while you weren't there and decided just to kill her, it may be unreasonable for you but we have to take this theory into consideration as well." Eric disagreed.

"You and your very realistic theories won't survive in the future because a normal person wouldn't carry a knife around like it was a toy" Calvin stated.

"OBJECTION!" Eric shouted.

''The victim was stabbed indeed but by what? you assumed that it was a knife but any other sharp object will do the trick" He confirmed.

"*hmmm* You got a point, pal," Calvin admitted.

"See, you can't win against me! *hahaha*"

"Don't yell like that in the future, it's embarrassing."

While the two of them were talking, detective Freeman came with a bunch of police officers.

"Hi, detective Freeman, any progression on the investigation?" Calvin asked.

"Yes, we have resolved this case."

Eric: "You don't mean... "

Detective Freeman: "Calvin Bradford, you are under arrest for murdering Sarah Baker."
