Chapter 49 - Tests

"As you give demonstrations of your combat prowess with live sparing and the demonstration of techniques, you will go over some of your written answers. For magic we will test the potency of you mana with this device here." Luna says, gesturing to a crystal ball. "Following that just a simple demonstration of each of your affinities and any techniques you may have developed. When that is done you can choose to spar with an adventurer of any rank, based on the results we may place you higher than the D-rank most adventurers start as."

"Alright, I'm ready to begin." Iskandor says, waiting to see who his opponent for the live sparring will be.

"When asked why you wanted to join the guild, you wrote, "I want to grow stronger, not just for myself but for those I care about. It's not to say my goals are selfish as if I see someone in need of help I intend to do so. The only case I may decline to help someone in danger is if they are known to cause harm to others. Of course, as the world isn't perfect it's inevitable I'll be able to save everyone, that doesn't mean I can't try." Is that to mean that the strength you seek is firstly for those you care for, secondly for others and thirdly yourself?" Miette asks. Before Iskandor has a chance to reply however, a spear quickly approaches his head. Iskandor shifts his head and grabs the spear.

"That is correct, as I have written I intend to help all that I can, but I do have a bias towards those I care for." Iskandor answers, then proceeds to snap the training spear over his shoulder as he turns to face his opponent, Audit Knoe. "Didn't expect you'd be the examiner."

"They have random mid-rank adventurers come in to do so from time to time. I also asked if I could be in charge of your combat exam." Audit replies.

"When asked if you could only save your significant other or the nation's ruler, you answered... uh... am I reading this right, you wrote, "Which significant other? If it's just one of them then whichever one it is I'd clearly go for them, if it was all of them I'd pull something out of my ass and save them all. (Doesn't mean I wouldn't try to save the king in either scenario though.)" I'm not even sure what to ask for that one..." Miette sighs.

As Miette was asking the question Audit started using his now broken training spear as more of a staff than a spear. Iskandor, while dodging the first few strikes formed a sword and shield from ice. "Been a while since I've used a shield..." Iskandor muttered.

Once the question was finished Audit had yet to land a solid blow on Iskandor despite Iskandor taking this as sheild training.

"Yeah, you read that right. I'm not even sure how I would ask questions based on that." Iskandor replied, deflecting another strike made by Audit.

"When you were asked if you would save either an important figure in your life or the lives of a dozen innocent people from two separate beasts you wrote, "The only important figures in my life are more than likely able to handle themselves in the face of a monster, so I would assume they are otherwise incapacitated. I would save both groups by using earth magic to protect both parties and proceed to use whatever form of range that best suits the monster to attract aggro to then kill them." You are aware in these hypothetical situations you are meant to only choose one group?" Meitte asked.

"I am well enough aware." Iskandor starts, then dives through Audit's wide stance to attack from behind. "Despite that however, hypothetical situations don't always reflect reality, and although reality is often times worse than the hypotheticals we come up with. In reality however, we can make up our own rules, save who we want given we have the means to." As Iskandor finishes his answer, he counters Audit's last blow. Using his tail to knock Audit to the ground Iskandor then holds his sword to Audit's throat. "I take it this is my victory?"

"Indeed, you have shown excellent 1 vs 1 combat ability whilst being mentally occupied." Miette explained.

"Actually, I wouldn't say that occupied my thoughts much at all. My fight was a series of predetermined moves I've made up long ago, all I had to do for combat was choose the most effective move, apply it to the situation or if needed make up something. For the questions, I already had my reasoning thought out, I expected that these questions in specific would be asked due to the nature of the questions. I don't believe my answers even influenced your question choice." Iskandor quickly explained, ignoring the looks of awe and dodging Audit's suprise attack. "A predictable time to launch a suprise attack, but an effective one in most cases."

"Alright then, perhaps we will have some missions for you that would normally involve escorting a scholar..." Miette replies.

---------------

"Vlad... Have you ever seen something like this?" Luna asks quietly.

"Once, but even then, if we compare them both if we accommodate for the major difference in experience, Iskandor would easily top him..." Vlad replies in thought. "We should continue observing for the magic exam. Who know what he has up his sleeve."

--------------

"Alright, let's first test the potency of your mana, this will give your mana a number between 1 and 10,000. The higher the number the more potent you mana is. The highest recorded number is 8,986. Even this number though is a far cry from the average of around 2,000. I wouldn't worry wha-" Miette explains everthing but stops as Iskandor placed a hand on the ball.

"It's over 9,000!" Vlad yelled in shock.

"Alright, 9,420, not bad!" Iskandor remarks.

"Not bad..." Luna says, "if that's "not bad" what the hell is good to you?"

"Probably over 10,000... I'll probably check my progress with this occasionally. I reccomend improving it before I breach 10,000 as I refuse to be held liable for inferior equipment." Iskandor replies, starting to let go of his formal mannerisms to show his true self.

"I have a bad feeling about this..." Luna says.

"Even so, that much raw power... We have to hope he decides to use it for good rather than evil." Vlad replies.

"For your final test, demonstrate your magical affinities in any way you see fit." Miette briefly explains before backing away.

Iskandor starts by creating a large flame, turning the sand floor to glass while lifting an earthwall between him and the flame. Iskandor dives into the shadow to appear in a different corner of the room. Using air magic to compress the air beneath his feet Iskandor runs across the air, as he does so creating a whirlpool where the fireball once stood. Iskandor finishes off by jumping into the middle of the whirlpool. Instead of shattering the glass, the glass forms a sphere around Iskandor.

"Someone, attack me." Iskandor requests.

Audit proceeds to throw a new training spear with enough force that it should shatter the glass. Instead, the spear itself broke. Iskandor then snaps his fingers, the sphere explodes outward to reveal a large glass flower.

"Flower was easier so don't give me shit about it." Iskandor laughs.

"That was... impressive..." Miette manages to say, shocked from the display presented.

"So, should I challenge someone?" Iskandor asks.

"I don't think that will be necessary, I would grant you S rank immediately but that would cause too much of a stir, I can grant you A rank without much trouble though." Vlad explains.
