Chapter 2 - The Family of Artisans

"You... You... May the gods bless you if they haven't already!" Smith shouts, causing his wife to come out.

"What is all this about?" she asks.

"Iskandor here is a genius! this could revolutionize the blacksmithing industry! Maple, take him to your work shop, let's see what else he can do!"

"Sure, but why?!" Maple exclaims perplexed.

"Umm... is this as big as you are making out to be Smith?" Iskandor asks, concerned for his ever increasing reputation, reputation that could bring danger should he not be careful.

"Big? No, this is huge! It can take hours to bend a sheet this precisely, and there aren't hammer dents!" he exclaims, praising the new found prodigy.

"Really, now I need to see what he can do for carpentry!" Maple says bewildered.

"Fine..." Iskandor reluctantly agrees and grabs a nail and heats it up with the small wire and makes decent screw in a few minutes.

"Alright, let's head to the workshop." Maple says eagerly.

"Yup, I'll need two clamps, a weight and extra hands as I don't have tools for this yet." he says holding up the screw with a square instead of a normal head.

"If I had more time I would make a tool for this but here goes nothing..."

and after some fiddling two pieces of wood are screwed together.

"If I had a tool this would be flush but if this screw will hold you won't be able to take the pieces of wood apart by force, although this is just a nail with a spiral weakly attached..." He starts muttering, doubting the screw.

"Let's head to my brother in law, if he can't take these apart as a stonemason you might be a carpentry genius as well." Maple says.

"Alright, but I see where this is going... Can you get me limestone, clay, the sand from the river bank and water please, I can make something for stone masonry," Iskandor says towards smith, "and I also need a very hot fire, hotter than the fire for melting iron if that helps..."

"Is that even possible?" Smith asks.

"No, I guess I will have to improvise if you can't procure a flame hot enough..." Iskandor says while wondering if his fire breath is hot enough. "Just gather the materials Smith, I can make something that can change the process of building walls, houses and basically anything made of stone."

"On it, normally I wouldn't do all this on a whim but the glint in your eyes, I feel different..." Smith says while grabbing some buckets and starts gathering the materials.

'If only you knew...' Iskandor thought while heading towards the stonemason with Maple in tow.

"Mason, come out, I need your strength to test something." Maple says knocking on the door. Mason soon comes out, intrigued. "Can you try to pull these planks apart, if you can't that means this screw thing could be a revolutionary product for carpentry, and he seems to have something in mind for you."

"Really? That shut in has talent?" Mason says doubtfully.

"Just do it, your brother is grabbing some stuff so I can show you a new product I came up with..."

"You must have made him something ni-" Mason starts.

"Just pull the planks apart..." Iskandor says sternly, already sick of the attitude. As a response to being cut off Mason tugs at the planks, presses his foot on one and pulls the other and before the screw moves one bit the wood snaps. Maple is rendered silent and Mason doesn't realize the importance of this.

"Better than nails right?" Iskandor asks with a triumphant grin.

"Yes..." Maple says, shocked the wood broke.

"I got what you asked for." Smith heaves, carrying the four buckets with 2 on each arm. Iskandor, Mason and maple all grab a bucket and set them down

"Let's go to the stone patio so I don't ruin the grass..." Iskandor says while moving the buckets and grabs an Iron ingot quickly.

"If you mix the clay and limestone powder in this ratio and add water," Iskandor starts explaining as he goes through the steps and lays the cement mix on the ground, "you then heat it up to a temperature hot enough to melt iron, so stand back." he continues and shoots his draconic flames at the sludge and iron ingot off to the side and the sludge soon turns into a white ash as the ingot has melted. "now you mix it in a 3:1 ratio with this sand from the river called gypsum and put the paste where you need." he finishes and plops the concrete onto a brick and presses another brick into the concrete. "Now, tomorrow morning this should be as hard as a rock, feel free to test it and make your own to fortify this small town..." Iskandor tells Mason.

"Do you have anything my wife Tayler could use as a tailor?" Mason asks.

"Yeah, my sister has slowly been losing business like the rest of us, hopefully you can get us back in business!" Maple exclaims hopefully.

"Well, maybe not for clothing but I do have an idea, bring her to your workshop Maple."

"Alright, depending on this you may get enough money to last a while, you created an upgrade to the nail, a device to bend metal, and some sort of stone glue... depending on this I think you may have earned a gold peice." Maple says.

"1 gold! I can't accept that, it's 100 hundred silver pieces, or 10 thousand copper... you can't afford that!" Iskandor exclaims, unwilling to take the potential gold coin.

"If the stone glue works out and whatever you make for my sister is good it's the least we can do, the glue is worth at least 50 silver if it works." Maple insists.

"Fine, just bring Tayler to your shop, and bring me the dimensions of her loom please."

********************

"It's unlike Iskandor to do anything much... I wonder what has gotten into him..." Lar ponders...

********************

"This is for you Tayler, let's head to your loom and see how this works, luckily you actually had a wide loom otherwise this would be useless... the purpose is to cut down on manpower." Iskandor explains while showing the flying shuttle and starts walking towards 'Tayler's Textile Tailory' that is next to 'Smith's Smithy', 'Mason's Masonry' and 'Maple's Woods'.

"So you helped out us Savants." Tayler said.

"Yeah, you four are our town artisans and I guess I finally did something and helped out the Savant family." Iskandor replied honestly as he reached the tailory. "let's see how this works, start weaving a small blanket or something to give it a test, I'll probably sleep in and send Lar in the morning to check on the cement and your progress, due to all this I may get paid more than I'm willing to accept."
