Madam Yun bought Xuan Yi to her daughter's courtyard and introduced her to the esteemed Young Miss of the Yun family, Yun Le. Xuan Yi remembers the etiquette that was taught to the palace maids when she was still alive and copied their mannerisms. She bowed and greeted her new mistress and did not stand up from her bow until her mistress acknowledged her.
Yun Le quickly went over to her and personally helped Xuan Yi up. It looks like her reputation for being gentle and virtuous is true. Yun Le gave Xuan Yi a kind smile and told her, "Welcome to the Yun Family Xuan Yi."
After interacting with the sole daughter of the Yun Family, Xuan Yi could tell that she lived a simple and honest life. If not for the dead maidservant's story, Xuan Yi would have a hard time trying to see Yun Le as a murderer.
Xuan Yi's roles as the new maidservant were nothing much because as the only daughter of a wealthy family in the village, Yun Le does not have any engagements other than her music classes. All Xuan Yi has to do was to follow her as she goes about her day. She noted that her Young Miss does not like to have someone help her when she is changing nor does she like having someone to serve her. She is an independent woman and her activities do not require any external help. It was all just for appearance's sake as it would look bad if the Young Miss of the wealthy Yun family did not have a single personal maidservant. Young Miss Yun even requested Xuan Yi to talk to her as if she was a normal person and Xuan Yi only relented after much persistence from her Young Miss.
Yun Le likes to read in the library and she likes to spend her time gazing at the flowers in the garden. Although the Yun family is considered wealthy in the village, it cannot be compared to the capital where wealthy and noble houses are able to afford luxuries such as building a private library or a private garden for their children. This meant that Yun Le would often meet the other female family members during her stroll in the gardens. They would talk about the flowers or the latest fashion before going their own ways. There were only two other concubines residing in the Yun household and they had no children. With Yun Le's temperament, how could they bring themselves to hate her? It can be said that Yun Le's existence maintains the peace of the household. Her brother, Yun Qi, often finds her to chat whenever he is free and would tell her all of the adventures he had and exotic goods he has found. He would then gift them to his younger sister. Based on this alone, Xuan Yi could tell that Yun Qi does dote on his younger sister which made it more confusing. If he loves his younger sister so much, why would he do something to hurt her? Xuan Yi shook her head, she cannot jump into conclusion.
Xuan Yi took note of her mistress's activities and location and she did not notice anything out of the ordinary. She did not see anything wrong with Yun Le's mood when she was interacting with her elder brother either. Xuan Yi was a little confused and wondered if the dead maidservant was mistaken about the lover's identity. It's difficult for Xuan Yi to see how such a gentle girl would harm her brother whom she seems to adore. However, she knows that she cannot judge her yet. Her true colors would be revealed as time passes.
The Yun family mostly relies on trade to make a living and they have flourished by selling their famous products throughout the kingdom. Xuan Yi heard that they had a few shops around the kingdom and they are making good profits which resulted in their current wealth. As to why the family did not move into the capital, it seems like the head of the family is not too fond of the politics of the capital. He would prefer to spend his days peacefully and not play mind games with the merchants or the officials in the capital. He does not wish his family to be involved in it either.
When Xuan Yi casually asked her mistress if she would have preferred to live in the capital, her miss had said. "Although it sounds lively, your Young Miss would rather spend her life peacefully. I am of the same as father. I do not wish to live such a complicated life. As long as my family is well, my husband treats me well and my children are successful, I will have no regrets when I leave this world."
Xuan Yi had overseen the halls of judgment and punishment when she was still under training to be the demon lord and she has not seen many who passed on peacefully. Everyone died with some sort of regret, vengeance, and unwillingness but ultimately, they will have to accept the fact that they have died. It was never a pleasant scene and Xuan Yi never really liked to oversee either hall.
Looking at Yun Le, Xuan Yi could see a slight sadness in her eyes when she mentioned her husband. Xuan Yi tried to get her Young Miss to open up more by probing further.
"Xuan Yi has heard of Young Miss's future husband. It is Young Master Ma, isn't it."
They were in the library with Xuan Yi helping her young miss refill her teacup. Yun Le's eyes seem to dim a little at the mention of her fiancé. She nodded, "That is correct."
"When this servant was out buying groceries, this servant heard that Young Master Ma is a man of loyalty and integrity. He seems like a very good person," Xuan Yi added.
"Indeed," Yun Le agreed with Xuan Yi's statement as she slowly sips her tea.
"Does Young Miss like Young Master Ma?" Xuan Yi asked, her tone innocent.
Yun Le froze at the sudden question before she answered. "Yes. I do like him," a small smile appeared on her face. It was as if her whole face lit up and her appearance became shy. Light red dusted her cheeks and her eyelashes fluttered as she thought of her fiance. This is truly a beautiful image of a maiden in love.
"That's great, this servant is happy for you. This servant hopes that Young Miss will be happy in the future," Xuan Yi babbled like an innocent child but she knows each of her words are like knives thrown at Yun Le's heart.
"Yes, of course. Your Young Miss will be happy," Yun Le's tone seemed forceful as she clenched her fits under her large sleeves, a determined look in her eyes.
Xuan Yi eyed her young miss before she resumed pouring tea silently as though the conversation did not happen.
