Chapter 17 - Inside Their Minds

Sophie gasped as she opened her eyes. She stood in a throne room. She looked behind her and saw her father on the ground with a sword through his chest. "Sophie!" a voice behind her said. Sophie turned around as her mother wrapped her arms around her. "Oh my gods!! Are you hurt?! What are you doing here?! And is that a scythe?" Alina said as she hugged her daughter tighter.

"Mother! I'm okay! I'm okay! I had to come save you all! I couldn't just leave you here to die! And yeah it is. But it's not mine. It's Akila's. Nathan's mother" Sophie said to her mother reassuringly, "But I can't leave you in here. We need to find a way out. But how?"

"We need a door. And I know just how to do that. Nathan told us that you know you have magic. Now is the time to use it. Do you see that plant? Focus on it. Get it to grown and form the shape of a door. After that I will use my own magic to get it to open. You can do this," Alina said pointing to a plant in the corner of the room. Sophie looked at her mother and nodded. Stepping away she raised her hands and focused them on the plant. The green emerald on her arm band glowed brightly as the plant began to grow. Its form started to change, a door manifesting from its original form. Sophie let her arms down, panting. "Good job! I'm so proud of you!! Now come on!" Alina led her daughter to the door and placed her hands on it. She muttered, "Unbream dilopre." The door glowed with a blue light and opened. Alina and Sophie walked through the door and back into the dungeon.

Alina stood up, happy to be back into her body. "Please be careful mother. You have no idea what could be in Father's head. You could get hurt," Sophie said, "can you make the door?"

"I can't. Your father can though. I promise I'll be careful," Alina said smiling at her daughter. Placing her hand on Lyle's head she said, "Locto dremo," and whisked into his head. Sophie sighed and went to Akila.

"3 hours and 30 minutes left! You better hurry!" Kasai's voice boomed.

"Crap. I need to move!" Sophie placed the glowing tip of the scythe on Akila's head and entered her mind.

Sophie stood in a room of dark stone. She saw Akila standing at the other side of the room watching Charles getting his wings cut off and thrown into a pile with Nathan's body. "Akila! It's Sophie! We need to find a way out of here!" Sophie yelled. Akila turned around and looked at Sophie. Her eyes darted to the scythe in her hand.

"Where did you get that! I lost it years ago!" Akila exclaimed running to Sophie.

"A man in a village gave it to me and told me your story. I'm so sorry you've had to go through what you did. He said that this weapon, in whatever form, will assist my child, the child of light, to defeat Kasai. He said not to return it to you," Sophie replied as she was focusing on a random vine to make the door again.

"He was correct in what he said. That weapon is powerful. My magic has been imprinted on it. It carries my magic and now yours. The longer you hold it the more of your magic it absorbs. But it doesn't take it. What are you doing?" Akila asked Sophie.

"I'm making a door. Can you please place your hand on it and say, ' Unbream Dilopre' and please be quick about it. I don't have much time," Sophie replied.

"Um, okay..." Akila place her hand on the door, "Unbream Dilopre." The stone walls of the dungeon started reappearing and Sophie saw her mother and father standing near Charles.

"Father! You're alright!" Sophie exclaimed, dropping the scythe and running to hug her father.

"Sophie! I'm so sorry.... I... I kept your lineage and magic from you.... I am so so sorry.... can you ever forgive me?" Lyle said holding his daughter's cheeks.

"Father, you have no need to apologize. Keeping it a secret made it more powerful. But right now we can't wait. You and Akila need to enter Charles' mind and get him out of there. Use your magic to create a door with any surrounding plants. After that Akila knows what to do. I need to save Nathan. Rescue Charles and wait for me. I don't know how long I will take. I suspect I only have about two hours to get Nathan out. Go get Charles. Akila," Sophie turned to her, " Simply say 'Locto Dremo' with your hand on Charles' head and my father's shoulder. You should enter his mind with my father. Go. We don't have much time." Sophie smiled at her father and picked the scythe back up. Turning to her family she tapped the blade on Nathan's head and entered his nightmare.

Sophie blinked and saw that she stood in a large stone room. In the distance Nathan sat on his knees, his face in his hands. Sophie yelled his name and ran to him. As she grew closer she could see that a black shadow surrounded him, the only color being it's two red eyes. "Well lookie here, Sophie has arrived to rescue the monster from himself. But can she truly save you?" The shadow said to Nathan.

"Get away from him!" Sophie yelled swinging the scythe at the shadow. It simply just passed through the darkness, not leaving a scratch.

"Tsk, Tsk. Sophie... I am a shadow... a manifestation of Nathan's anger and hatred. You cannot harm me. Only he can. But the only way is through an outside act. But sadly, you cannot do anything," The shadow engulfed Nathan as he looked up.

"Soph-" The shadow had obstructed Sophie's view of Nathan as he tried to yell her name.

"Nathan!" Sophie yelled and dropped the scythe. She ran to the shadow and forced her way through it. The dark air was hot to the touch and caused her pain. Sophie persevered through the pain and fell to the ground next to Nathan. "Nathan! Are you hurt?!"

"Sophie... please go... don't stay here... I'll hurt you..... please go..." Nathan said looking away from Sophie.

"Nathan, I'm not going anywhere. I know you would never hurt me. But you need to get up! We have to get out of here!" Sophie said lifting Nathan's head. She smiled softly at him. He looked at her and moved his head away. Her smile started to fade as she watched him move away. She grabbed his chin again softly and moved his face close to hers. Closing her eyes she kissed him. Nathan sat in shock as he felt Sophie's lips against his. He closed his eyes and placed his hand on her cheek, entwining her hair in his fingers. The shadow around Nathan started to disappear. The room around them faded to a black and the walls of the dungeon reappeared.

Sophie and Nathan sat on the floor of the dungeon, their eyes closed and their lips entwined. As Sophie released Nathan looked at her and blushed. "How did you know that would save me?" He asked her.

"Have you read your fairy tales. True love's kiss saves all," Sophie replied grabbing his hand.

"That's sweet and all but your final battle awaits," Kasai said, opening the door. Sophie stood up and grabbed her scythe off the floor. "Now would you all so kindly follow me. Sophie and Nathan first." Sophie and Nathan, hand in hand, walked behind Kasai, their families behind them.
