Chapter 65 - A Visit To A Home

Gordan smiled and pulled himself to his feet and began drawing a circle in the dirt with his foot. Thankfully the dirt was covered in thick layer of dust so it was easy. As he etched the lettering into the circle he wondered why he was even bothering to show Orion somthing that wouldn't mean anything to him at all.

"You see, today is a very important day, that is if they are keeping things on schedule."

Gordan held out his hand and Orion stepped into the circle with him just as Gordan activated it.

Suddenly they appeared in a forest area, and Gordan began walking toward the edge of the forest.

When they were at the edge he pulled out two cloaks and handed one to Orion.

"Here you might need this, the people here are a bit on the jumpy side."

Orion smelled the air as a scent had cought his attention while he had accepted the cloak.

"Is somthing burning?"

Gordan smiled sadly and began walking toward a building which was covered in torch light, but the smell that Orion was smelling was a different kind of fire then what he was seeing.

"Like I said these people are a bit jumpy, sorry but you might want to look a bit more human. Or they could freak out."

Orion instantly dawned his disguise and looked once more like an ordinary person. He wondered why Gordan was acting so odd, ever since they had arrived it almost seemed like he was holding himself back from doing somthing. But Orion couldn't tell what that might be.

As they approached the building in front of them Orion noticed that there seemed to be a small gate where quite a bit of activity was going on. Gordan walked up to the gate and walked through without a second thought. He navigated through the crowd of people with complete ease like he had done it a thousand times.

Orion fallowed behind him taking in the surroundings. It seemed to be a manner of some sort, and they were in a sort of garden area. It was extremely huge, and put together immaculately, every bit of it looked like it had taken years to complete. As they went further in the crowd became more and more conjested until suddenly it stopped altogether right in front of a cottage which was standing in the corner of the garden.

It seemed to be a simple structure, but in Orion's eyes it radiated with a strange glow. He looked around and saw that all of the people in the crowd seemed to be fearful about somthing, but Orion didn't think that they were capable of seeing the glow so he looked over at Gordan in confusion. But Gordan just nodded his head as though to tell him to wait and see how things played out, so he turned his attention back to the cottage and waited to see what would happen.

After about fifteen minutes the crowd suddenly parted down the middle to make room for a procession. Orion saw that they seemed to be royalty of some sort, but why in the world they had to be carried to the location on thrones while being surrounded by a hundred soilders escaped Orion completely. The king and queen in their respective thrones held hands and raised them in triumph which made the crowd suddenly burst into cheers. Orion was even more confused. Why in the world did this place matter so much?

As soon as the prosesion made it to the end of the crowd the thrones were set down and the cheers ceased and the king and queen rose calmly from their thrones to address the crowd.

"As you are all aware that a certian king used a contracted demon to rise his kingdom to power, and ever since then we people lived in oppression of that state."

The crowd muttered their agreement, and Orion was even more confused as to why the two of them had come to such a random ceremony. Orion also had a strange urge to attack the king in front of him, something about him kind of ticked him off.

"That was then, now we the people have risen up and vanquished the evil kings descendant freeing the kingdom from the rule of tyranny."

The king paused and the crowd began to cheer loudly once more until the king raised his hand for silence.

"Unfortunately it would seem that the demon's contract is still intact and thanks to the efforts of my queen we have determined that it is being kept in this location."

The king pointed toward the cottage and the whole crowd let out a gasp of horror.

"As you all know the former king and the demon were both able to escape through unknown means. Leaving us no choice but to destroy the contract killing the demon."

The crowd let out a murmer of agreement and one of the guards brought forth a torch light with green flame, which made the whole crowd grow silent to watch the scene unfold. The knight walked up to the king and represented the flame to him while kneeling.

"Now the queen and I will do the honors of destroying this unholy place."

Gordan began to breath deeply as though trying to ready himself for somthing to come. Orion rested his hand on his shoulder to steady him. He didn't really get what was going on but he wasn't here to do anything unless he was asked to. He was only here to observe. So observe he did, he watched as the king and queen slowly walked forward with the torch until they reached the door of the cottage which had been opened for them by the guards. Together they threw the torch into what looked like a pile of papers which were instantly engulfed in green flame which quickly began to spread over the entire house in a matter of seconds. The king and queen stepped away and raised their hands in victory.

"Thank you to all that attended this monumental occasion, this day will now be known as the day of the demons defeat."

The king clapped his hands and the guards pulled back some barricades which opened up the rest of the garden so that those in attendance could enjoy music and food which had been set up earlier in the day.

"Please enjoy this festival, as our thanks to all of you who supported our rise from tyranny."

Now that Orion paid closer attention to those around him, almost all of them seemed to be higher class individuals. He wondered who this demon was that they had been speaking of, and as the people began to move toward the food and music Orion noticed that Gordan continued to stare at the green flames which were rising high into the darkened sky.

"So the green flame was what I was smelling, but it's rather odd that they would use that type of fire isn't it? I thought that fire was used more in warfare which takes place in water heavy areas."

Gordan nodded at the statement and began to walk alittle closer to the light of the fire which was illuminating the guarden in a green light.

"It is also a very effective fire for destroying important documents since it leaves no trace whatsoever."

Orion looked at the flames and then back to Gordan.

"But isn't it a bit odd that they would burn an entire building just to get rid of a single document?"

Gordan nodded his head again and continued to stare at the flame in an almost trance like state.

"Usualy it would be overkill bit in this particularly case they aren't actually trying to destroy a single document. That building is a store of records involving everything that has happened to this kingdom in the hundred plus years. And includes certain information, which if released to the public would be detrimental to the new nobility's facades of patriotism."

Orion nodded his head and sighed.

"So the whole thing about the contract is a lie?"

Gordan didn't say anything and still watched the flames until suddenly there was a load crack from within the building which made all of those present look on in horror as the cottage split apart revealing a monstrous figure which was standing in the flames looking out on the people with pure hatred. It stood ten feet off the ground and was solid black with a set of wings out of it's back and twisted horns coming out of its forehead. Its soulless glowing eyes looked around the crowd before spotting Gordan which made its eyes grow even colder.

"As far as this king knew there was no contract in there, however the former king's father did sign a contract, just not with a demon. The contract couldn't be broken by either of the parties involved in the composition of the contract. And if someone else were to break it, a monster would be summoned, such as this one. This type of contract is referd to as a monster contract, or eternal contract since it cannot be broken with time or without the proper equipment."

Orion looked slightly concerned but the monster did not move from its position and just sat there motionless staring at them. The people around started to scream and panic but the king walked slowly forward and lifted out his hand casting a spell of enhancement on the flames making them burn even brighter.

"So why isn't the creature attacking?"

Gordan pointed at the ground around the creatures feet. Now that the house was destroyed Orion could see the sorce of the glow was a giant magic circle which was keeping the monster from moving an inch.

Gordan stared back at the monster but he couldn't shake the sorrow from his heart as he had watched all of the books that he had collected over the years being burnt up without a second thought. It was like a friend was being killed right in front of him with him being unable to do anything to stop it. He had suspected that the king had hidden the contract that he had forced Gordan to sign all of those years ago in the house were Gordan lived after his father kicked him out of the main house. He knew that the contract needed to be destroyed before he could move on with his life and it gave him slight satisfaction that the king which had tried to kill him was going to be the one to actually free him from the contract. Still the sight of his home being burnt down in such a way made him sick to his stomach.

As the king increased the damage Gordan felt a sharp pain start to crawl up his arms. The effects of breaking the contract were finally coming into place now that the monster was taking significant damage. He stopped himself from making any noise and just stood there watching the fire and monster burn away. Suddenly he felt a coldness rush over him and the effect dissipate at his shoulders.

"I told you not to add any more stress and you do somthing like this..."

Orion had hidden his scythe away from veiw so as to not draw any attention but now he brought is out and struck the ground which sent them back to the feild in front of the forest once again. He could tell that watching that scene was painfully for Gordan, but he was surprisingly happy that he had been trusted with the scene even though they had only known each other for two days at most.

"So would you mind telling me what in the world just happened?"
