Chapter 36 - A Trip Down Memory Lane #2

Jean poured another cup of tea before he began his story. The tea was quite inferior to the kind that Gordan had made at their first meeting, but it did the trick usually.

Gordan watched Jean as he took another sip of tea. He knew that it would still be a bit hard to talk about the thing that had torn you way from family and friends, which was why he had a neutral expression in order to help Jean keep a calm demeanor while speaking.

"Alright, Around twenty and a half years my time, I was hired to summon a hero for a certain kingdom. The king of this country sought me out and gave me a promise that he would leave me and my family be if I did as he asked. And to understand why this was important you have to know that up until that point the king, and the previous king had been trying to eradicate us off the map, since we had certain... differences of opinion."

Gordan listened quietly nodding when necessary to imply that he comprehended the situation. After the first bit of hesitation Jean was really able to tell the story without much difficulty.

"So naturally I complied to the request and went through with the summoning. But of course the situation was too good to be true. the last thing that I remember happening was finishing the ritual and them being attacked by the kings guards, after I lost consciousness I woke up on this place."

Goran took a sip of the tea in front of him and carefully watched Jean, whose hands were shaking in anger, and Gordan could see why that would be the case. He had tried to save the ones that he cared for, but instead of saving them he had left them all alone and in even greater trouble. It was a simple story and not nearly as long as Gordan thought it might be, well that was what he thought until he looked around to see that the flowers in the garden which had been budding at the beginning of the story were already in full bloom.

There was complete silence, unbroken by anything. Then Gordan set down his cup and laced his fingers together placing his elbows on the table.

"So, what do you need me to do about it?"

In the real world the soilder was sitting next to the fire looking up at the stars trying to remember what he had forgotten, but no matter how hard he tried he couldn't think of what happened. He looked over at the sleeping figure next to him. The person who had saved him, but why had he needed saving in the first place. Gordan looked like a corpse when he was sleeping and it was a bit unnerving to the soilder. At first he thought that it was just an odd sleeping habit to cross ones arms over themselves like a person in a coffin, but as time went on he noticed that Gordan's skin was gradually turning extremely pale. He might have gone over to see if he was breathing but for some reason he had the feeling that he should stay away from Gordan while he was sleeping.

So instead he just sat there in silence, it was such a peaceful atmosphere that he wanted to fall asleep, suddenly he heard noise coming from the bushes across from the fire. The soilder quickly grabbed his weapons and held them low so that they wouldn't be visible to what ever it was in the bushes.

The rustling continued for another moment and then an attack suddenly came, but not from the bushes, the attack came from the trees. A person jumped down from the tree over Gordan with a knife poised at his heart. The soilder moved to stop the blow but a throwing knife shot out of the bushes toward his head. He dogged and quickly grabbed the knife out of the air as it passed by him, throwing it back in one swift motion. He turned to see if Gordan was injured but upon seeing the scene he couldn't help but feel bad for the assailant. Gordan was still laying on the ground but one of his arms was extended in the air clutching the persons throat. Not enough to to crush their throat, or even to make them go unconscious. It was just enough so that the person dropped the knife and was trying desperately to break free from his grip. The soilder came over and saw that Gordans eyes were still closed, but as he bent over to see if he had been injured by the falling knife Gordans eyes opened. He looked around for a second and saw that there was a knife sticking out of his left hand and a person choking in his right hand.

"Mind explaining what's going on here?"

The soilder was in stunned silence, the look that had been in Gordans eyes when he had first opened his eyes, he remembered it from somewhere. His head felt like it was splitting and he grabbed his head to stop the pounding. He fell to his knees and his eyes started to roll back into his head, and he started to zone out of his surroundings again.

Gordan quickly sat up and closed the soilders eyes with his left hand, which made him start to pull back into reality. Flashes went through his mind like a whirlwind, he saw headless corpses, and a rope hanging from the rafters swaying back and forth, and then he saw the figure on a corpse devoid of color save a deep red blood coming out of its eyes, which were filled with an unbridled darkness which threatened to consume him.

And then he heard a voice speaking in a calm tone.

"It's okay, you're going to be fine, it's over now..."

The voice continued to speak calmly until the pictures disappeared, and his head stopped pounding. The soilder took in deep breaths until he had fully calmed down, but he still kept his eyes closed listening to the calming voice. And eventually he fell into a deep sleep.

Gordan was a bit less than happy about being woken up in such a manner, and it appeared by the soilders reaction that the unhappiness had been written on his face. But still even if it had shocked him it wouldn't have made him go off like that. So that left open the possibility that his expression had reminded the soilder about what had happened the day before. While it was rather inconvenient for him he ended up sitting there for an hour and a half calmly speaking to the soilder until he was sure that he had fallen asleep. And by that time the sun was just starting to rise in the sky, meaning that he was still technically on schedule which was an upside. The other upside was that the horse hadn't been woken up by any of the nights events which was a relief since the horse wouldn't have been all that much help in a situation like that. Once he had confirmed the conditions of the other two individuals Gordan turned to the limp figure in his right hand. The person was rather small and wearing all black, and so Gordan labeled them an assassin, he smiled at the difference in this assassins attire to the one he had delt with two days ago. He wondered how the kid was doing, he had used a minor teleportation portal to send her back to her home where ever that was, but he was still injured at the time so he kind of wondered if he had been able to make the portal correctly. He unclenched his fist and laid the person down onto the ground, he still needed to deal with the knife so he turned his back on the small figure which predictably the figure tried to make a break for it. Without even thinking Gordan smashed his foot down on one of the person's arms pinning them to the ground. The masked figure cried out in pain but Gordan didn't pay it that much attention and instead focused on removing the knife and bandaging his hand. He did however give a comment in an offhanded and almost uninterested tone that one might use when talking about the weather.

"Would you mind not being so loud? There are people sleeping here you know."

The assassin still squirmed around trying to escape from under his foot, but once Gordan finished with his hand, he reached down his hand and grabbed the persons throat and gave a small squeeze. After a few moments of struggling the assassin's eyes rolled up in his head and he fell unconscious.

Gordan put his bag on his back again and woke the horse, when he was finished cleaning up the area he picked up the soilder and put him over his shoulder, he placed the unconscious assassin on his other shoulder and him and the horse began there journey again, only now Gordan had even more weight to carry.
