Chapter 18 - Chapter 18

Prince Clyde lay in bed beside Gunner that night. Softly his fingers strokes their way through the man's soft teal hair. In his eyes he could see nothing else but the man in front of him. It was as though the entire world could have faded away from around him. Even if it had he would not care in the least as long as Gunner was all that was left behind. Leaning in closer to the man his lips gently pressed a tender kiss against his forehead just below Gunner's bangs as he slept.

It had not been long since Gunner had passed out. Neither one of them was wearing anything aside from the heavy blanket that was pulled up over their lower regions to stay warm. The only sounds that filled the room was the sounds of Gunner's breathing while he dreamed of things unknown to Clyde. As he paused his hand to gaze at the soft strands of hair on his fingertips he placed the hair against his lips. Closing his eyes he took in the scent of the man as if to savor it and store it away in his heart.

"There is no heaven in the after life that could top the one I feel like I'm in when your beside me." Prince Clyde whispered softly while enjoying the scent of Gunner's hair at the tip of his fingers.

Moonlight shone through the window that illuminated the room in a blue hue. No matter how he looked at it the picture of Gunner asleep in front of him was something that he wanted to burnt into his memory for life. He knew he was a race that would last long after Gunner but the memory and moment in front of him was something he wanted to mold in his heart and carry with him to his grave. As the sounds of footsteps could be heard approaching the bedroom door he forced himself to snap out of his trance to sit up on the bed and put his clothes back on.

As he walked to the door to answer it he found General Tao in a hurry to alert him of news about the southern wall. The beasts had begun to attack the wall during the dark of the night. Listening to his rants about the ongoing attacks Prince Clyde could only swallow down his desire to stay back in the room with Gunner and sleep the night away. He could not risk leaving the matter alone and something further happening to make matters worse. Behind him he could hear the silent breathing of Gunner as it calmed his heart a bit to know that Gunner would be safely sleeping in the room at least when he left.

"Just hold on and I will build you your own heaven out of this city.. Just as beautiful as the one you give me every day." Turning around to glance at the bed Prince Clyde's eyes held on to the picture of Gunner's sleeping form for a long while before he finally pulled his gaze away and closed the door behind him quietly in hope that he did not awake the man from his dream.

Leaving the building he could hear the howls off in the distance from the hell hounds trying to force their way through the southern wall. Their cries were full of hunger and desperation to break through. He was not sure how long they had been trying to force their way in but he knew he had to take care of them as quickly as possible. The sooner he took out the hell hounds he would be able to return to his room and sleep.

"Prince Clyde they are on the wall!" One of the Guards at the southern gate shouted at him as he walked up to the wall to see everyone frantically fighting back against the hell hounds as best as they could. Many lives had already fallen to the beasts fangs and it was already looking bleak.

"Hold them off! We can't allow them to make it past the wall!" Prince Clyde shouted at the men as he appeared on the wall above. Baring his fangs he grit his teeth and glared down at the beasts below as they tried to force their way up the wall at all costs. Their howls were deafening to the core as they desperately climbed one another to try and get closer to the top of the fifty foot stone wall.

"OIL!!" Prince Clyde shouted at the men as they poured barrels of oil over the ledge that coated the beasts below. On his signal arrows that were lit with fire rained down onto the beasts setting the beasts below ablaze as they yowled out in pain.

Most of the beasts ran off scared or were burnt alive. Though their numbers were dwindling out of fear of the fiery inferno dozens still remained below the wall. Fire was one thing that Prince Clyde did not like to be near due to his race as a vampire. It was one of the few things that put his own life at risk but for the sake of the future he desired to see he didn't even flinch at the heat of it.

Grasping a sword in his hand Prince Clyde stepped over the ledge of the wall. His body shooting downward the full fifty feet until he landed safely at the bottom in a kneeling position. The bellowing growls of the hell hounds from all sides closed in on him as the guards above and outside the wall with him panicked slightly at the sight of their prince out side the wall. With the sword in his hand he ignored all their attempts to call out to him to return inside the wall.

Amidst the burning flames around him Prince Clyde moved himself about while swinging the sword at every hell hound that attempted to come at him or the wall of the safety zone. With the lives of thousands on his shoulders and the life of his beloved he was not willing to let himself waver. As the heat of the fire scorched against his body his arm continued to swing the sharp blade he held firm at hand.

"PRINCE CLYDE!!!" They all cheered out to him as they saw their prince rushing about the battle field dropping one hell hound after another.

Blood drenched the ground and dripped from his blade as he bared his own fangs at the beasts while slicing them down one by one. The scent of iron was so heavy that even his eyes seemed to glow with a hint of red as it fueled his own hunger that he had to force himself to suppress back. He would not allow himself to lose to himself or the beasts for the sake of everything he held dear.
