Chapter 9 - Phase One

Helicopters are not a new concept as the earliest references for vertical flight date back to 400 BC and originated from China. Chinese children have played with the Chinese top which were bamboo flying toys. This bamboo-copter is spun by rolling a stick attached to a rotor. The spinning creates lift, and the toy flies when released. Over the years there were numerous ideas and attempts to built practical flight machines even Leonardo da Vinci tried his hand at it in the 1480s.

In 1936 the Focke-Wulf Fw 61 was widely considered the first real helicopter so Kane was predating it a few years and with a far more efficient design. Kane designed two modified versions of helicopters, correcting the design flaws that were in the original designs, increasing the firepower and abilities of both the Hind D and Chinook helicopters. Both were literally generations ahead of any other sort of helicopters in the world and he would only sell them to the American and British military. This was both to prevent information leakage and to bolster both forces as if there was only one force with superior technology without any counterbalance then people in power might get ideas to start flexing their military capabilities. Plus Britain had always boasted of great military power and the RAF or Royal Air Force was legendary even in Kane's dimension. Britain had also demonstrated it's naval superiority dating all the way back to before Nelson's crushing victory at Trafalgar and the air force was always considered the elite it was only the infantry that fell short. It was not for lack of training as that was top notch and the British always had that stiff upper lip that just bore with anything thrown their way with grit and determination. It was the equipment that was lacking as they just didn't have the funding that larger countries like America had and thus they had to keep selling of their designs and technology. It is a little know fact that the technology built to send rockets into space was developed by Britain and sold to America but it was kept hush hush for propaganda and political reasons. It was a pity that successive politicians kept cutting the funding of the armed forces and reduced the once glorious military of Britain to a global joke.

Kane swore that it wouldn't happen in this world, as in his world the Terran Space Empire was built from the British Commonwealth and after waning a bit it cam back stronger then ever and evolved into the empire, that showed the potential it had. It was Kane's bias that formed his opinion and it was his loyalty to the empire that created him to help out his birth country in this world. Naturally Kane was raised on the glory of the Terran Space Empire and indoctrinated since birth so he didn't question the obvious propaganda as he was blind to it. As far as the Terran Space Empire was concerned it was founded from a resilient country that was a conqueror and a supreme world power. This directly ignores a couple of facts such as Britain didn't fight alone and even in the second world war had people from different countries fought in their armed forces, especially the air force. Also that they were not always invincible, the Romans and Norsemen raided and conquered them before as well as the hundred year war debacle with France… As the old saying goes history is written by the victor and things were selectively glossed over and forgotten.

Of course Kane wouldn't get directly involved in politics at this stage but would sponsor various government plans and help grease the wheels, while pointing in need be, forcefully the right direction to go towards. Germany recovered very quickly from the second world war and the reasons for that were the policies they used. Although they were not popular they were very effective and while Britain was still on rations and food stamps for decades Germany had recovered into an economic powerhouse that dominated for decades after.

This would also help as Kane could recruit disabled soldiers by promising to restore them to peak condition whatever their injuries where. With the technology Kane had any injury is treatable and restoring missing limbs and healing scars are child's play. Also for families that couldn't support children because loss of one or both parents bringing in money or their business was destroyed then he could offer to adopt them. With the words of Howard Stark replaying through his mind about cultivating a certain image or mindset the amount of orphans and charitable cases there would be it would enough to jump start things making him seem a very compassionate, charitable and idealistic individual.

Kane opened a new hospital in his area of New York so that it would have access to the same power and technology that the rest of his power base had. This would enable him to provide the supreme medical services without worrying about loyalty of staff and technological theft.

He had thought about patenting his technology but that would require submitting his technology to be examined before the patent was approved and that was simply not in any way acceptable. Every country has spies and people willing to sellout their honor for materialistic gains thus his technology would be spread around the world. Not that they would be able to understand it but he would rather not give anything away, if for no other reason then he could have a monopoly. That and when he tried to publicize his cure for cancer two men dressed in cheap black suits turned up on his doorstep and told him the government didn't want it released. They gave their names as Llynch and Smith but had no formal identification and wouldn't say what part of the government they worked for. So long as he kept his technology to himself he could treat whomever could pay for it or there would be harsh consequences. Now Kane didn't care much for the threats but it proved that people high up had their eyes on him and it wouldn't do well to rock the boat just yet.

With his vast amount of funding, Kane began to purchase orphanages almost in bulk as nearly every day he added a new one to his list of properties and investments. Certain countries had or will do so in the near future enforced a one child only law so if there was more the one child it would be given birth to secretly and either given away or thrown away as a lot of the countries are patriarchal to inherit the family name, so females or those deemed worthless would be gotten rid of one way or another. Knowing roughly what countries would be hit and cities leveled if the war was fought in any way like his world, Kane began to purchase land and build more orphanages, schools and universities. Of course land and properties would be much cheaper after the war as they would be sold off cheaply to raise money quickly, but that might also come with annoying strings attached or various condition to fulfill that Kane had no interested in.

With the education and housing under his control he could teach them how to think and what to think, therefore he would be able to predict their actions to an extent as well continuously monitor them to provide 'guidance' if things strayed off course. Historically there were a lot of orphanages that had bad matrons which gave orphanages a bad reputation and turned out a lot of bad seeds even those that managed to avoid being steeped in crime. With Kane's constant monitoring he could also see that all the funds were well spent on his future investment and there was no corruption or embezzlement. After all these children would be his foundation and once they grew up they would teach the next generation and so on so he wasn't going to skimp out on investing anything.

For that he needed a lot of things, chiefly food and clothes to make sure everyone was well fed and clothed so there was no hunger or freezing in winter as there have been in the past in cases far too numerous to count.

With this in mind he began yet another massive spending spree to buy as many farms as he could to provide cotton, wool and even silk as well as various other things and obviously even more food production farms scattered throughout lots of countries. This would enable him to have a steady uninterrupted supply to provide for his soon to be growing empire. A lot of countries paid subsidiaries to farmers and their land owners to grow crops just to export so they could make the money and the actual farmers barely made any money, even on a good harvest and on a bad harvest then they could go totally bankrupt. With Kane buying the farms then he didn't need to worry about the many governments heavy handed measures or directives as he had more then enough income so he could grow whatever he wanted. That was the best part of being a company; if the local government started causing problems then he could always uproot and take his business and technology elsewhere.

Of course he needed to be able to process the raw materials so he had to buy and in many cases build factories to accommodate that. It would also help if he could have his own transport capabilities to ship them around the world and to avoid embargoes that some counties put on other countries ships, so he bought many new mines for the raw materials as well as ships and ship building facilities. This is where his detailed scan of the mineral deposits came in very useful as he was able to snag a good many deals from underdeveloped land and land that they didn't know true the value of. He also custom built several freight cargo planes.

After spending such a fortune, Kane decided to potentially build one more thing in cooperation with Howard Stark before any further investments. This would be at Howard's discretion as Kane didn't really want to build what he had in mind but it would provide the Allies a serious tactical advantage so long as it could be kept secret and be very profitable, while simultaneously opening other avenues of trade. The sum Kane had spent was more then some smaller countries treasury and annual GDP for others. This would be fine if he separated it all out under subsidiary companies, shell companies or staggered the purchases over a few years but currently he has come from nowhere with vast sums of money and that is more then enough to raise a few eyebrows but he wanted everything under his banner and set up ready to go. Most people in the world will look the other way so long as things don't directly affect them or negatively affect them and those that do take notice generally want a slice of the pie and can be silenced either by bribes, blackmail or more permanent and final solution.

Kane also bought a radio broadcasting station. This would enable him to host talk shows and music that could influence public opinion. Direct propaganda stations did exist but most people ignored them so he would have to be more subtle and play the long game. That was fine as Kane had the time as he was effectively immortal barring any unfortunate accidents as he didn't age.

This was the end of phase one of Kane's plan now all he had to do was wait.
