Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

The humming of a girl could be heard, along with the sound of metal being moved about.

"Looks like this'll be the only good thing I find today." The girl said as she grabbed a nearby cart.

On the cart was a 3 × 3 × 3 cube of metal (feet, not inches). With a sigh the girl began to push the cart. Eventually she reached an area where the metal wall, or rather, metal hull, had been ripped apart in a firefight. A forest was growing a few hundred feet in the area around the wreck. Around 50 or so feet from the opening was a vehicle. It had six spindly legs with a pair of wheels on each. It rose off the ground about ten feet. It's red paint was faded and scratched.

A lift lowered down and the girl pushed the cart on and boarded the vehicle. It drove away to a nearby mountain, where a small city had been built. Some time later the metal cube was sold. The cube would sit for several hours before someone would come in and try to grind it apart. When they failed they tried to melt it down only to fail again. The cube would remain untouched for some time.

It would eventually be sold again and again by different people of different races. It crossed the borders between factions several times.

This cube would pass through many peoples hands.

Eventually, during one of its interstellar voyages, it would be lost to the stars.

After drifting for an innumerable amount of years it was caught in the gravity well of a planet.

It would hurtle through the atmosphere, and crash into the planet's surface. Small cracks had formed here and there, but for the most part, it was undamaged.

A few days would go by, but eventually a young boy stumbled upon the cube. As fate would have it the boy would bring it back home eventually. He would spend hours hunched over it, slowly pulling it apart by the cracks. The days and weeks would pass by.

And one day he would succeed in opening this cube. And the universe would wish he hadn't.

The horror stored inside this cube, safely tucked away for later use, would be unleashed to finally bring terror to the warring factions.

This horror, created by a group of madmen which once made all the factions tremble in fear, was now unleashed.

As the boy peered into the cube he found a small stasis chamber powered by a Solarite Reactor. Of course, almost no one currently knew what a Solarite Reactor was anymore, much less Solarite. Regardless, the boy reached in to pull his prize out, only to unwittingly shut the stasis chamber off.

The boy did not even get the chance to scream.

Fleshy tentacles practically flew out of the cube. One went through his abdomen, another wrapped around his throat and squeezed so tightly that it crushed it instantaneously. A few more tentacles had latched onto the edges of the cube to lift it out. A sphere slowly came into view. Parts of it were flesh and blood, other parts were wire and metal, and there was also parts that were somewhere in between. A tentacle reached into the cube and pulled the Solarite Reactor out carefully, as if it were afraid of breaking it, along with a small metal rectangular prism filled with complex circuitry .

Some smaller tentacles snaked their way over to the boy. Unlike the previous tentacles that killed the boy through sheer force, these were sharper and more precise. They weren't quite flesh and blood nor metal and wire. The material was something that had only been dubbed Orum in the past, but had been forgotten by now.

The Orum tentacles burrowed into the dead boy. It slowly devoured him from the inside. By the time it was done there was nothing left. Even the blood on the walls and ground was gone.

The Orum tentacles twisted and turned before burrowing into the cube and devouring it as well.

It began to pull itself along the ground towards the nearest source of heat. In this case, a light bulb. It had no eyes or ears. It had a sense of touch, an ever so slight sense of smell, and an even weaker sense of taste. What it did have however, was a very sensitive sense of temperature.

Several devoured light bulbs later, and it was pulling itself around again. Eventually, it would make its way through the door and across the hall into the next room.

A family of three was sitting down at a table to eat dinner.

In the time it took for it to reach them, the tentacles had grown a little bit longer.

It rolled under the table without being spotted.

The little girl left to use the bathroom, leaving only the mother and father.

It pulled itself up to the underside of the table.

It was a gruesome scene. The mother was impaled and the father had his neck broken. Both were pulled down under the table where it began to devour them.

The little girl came out of the hallway into the room only to immediately get impaled through the heart.

A little while later and nothing was left of the three.
