Chapter 27 - Court Part 3

The next few days Ronan spent them making sure he was 100%, he had his haircut 2 days before court and a shave the morning of the court date, he made sure to wake up early, get ready and off to Steve's office, from there he will get a ride with Steve to the courthouse, simple.

...

Several hours later Ronan arrived outside of Steve's office, he was ready wearing a Reiss three-piece black suit it cost him a total of $700, the suit itself was $600, $100 for the tailoring so it fits him perfectly, his hair was styled into a slicked-back taper, making him look more professional, his shoes were black leather lace-up which cost him $150.

He arrived outside of Steve's door, ready to knock, only for it to be opened from the inside.

Inside was Steve getting ready to leave.

"Ready?" Steve asked giving Ronan a once-over to check if he looked the part.

"Yeah, you?" Ronan didn't care about how Steve looked, he was a lawyer and he should know how to appear.

"Yes, come on then, court is in 1 hour and it takes 30 minutes to get there on a good day." Steve led Ronan down to the parking lot and got into his Audi A5.

"Nice car." Ronan liked the car, it wasn't his ideal car, but it was one of his favourites.

"Thanks." Steve sounded as if he had heard it several times before.

They got into the car and Steve drove towards the courthouse, they were silent the entire way which made Ronan feel awkward.

...

It took them 45 minutes, they had 15 minutes to get inside and get ready, then hopefully 1 hour or 2 and then the case is done, Ronan wins etc.

They got inside the courtroom and the opposition was preparing as well, each side had a stack of files that they had to go through, most of it wouldn't be as helpful as the key pieces of evidence, they were there just for padding.

...

15 minutes later and the Judge steps in, Ronan takes the chance to look around the courtroom, watching the court case are 10 people, none of them are recognizable to Ronan.

"So, what's the case today." The Judge is middle-aged, he was talking to himself, he has the papers in front of him giving all the details about the case and the evidence from both sides, all he needs to do is listen to both sides and come to a verdict, which is very simple for cases like these, or at least that was what he thought.

"Plaintiff, state your case." The judge directs his attention to Steve.

"Your Honor. My client has discovered that the defendant has been stealing money from him, as seen in evidence number 1 and 2." On the pages were details regarding how much Ronan was getting paid and how much he should've been getting paid and his contract which shows the judge the percentage he would be getting paid, it was the most damning evidence within the case.

The judge took some time to read over the evidence, although he had done it before, he only took a quick glance, now it was time for him to read into the evidence fully.

"Defendant state your case." The judge took several minutes to read and understand with the help of his assistant.

"Your Honor. What the plaintiff submitted is falsified evidence, this is the true evidence and in light of this we would like to request a continuance." The defending counsel was pulling stuff out of thin air, but the judge had to act now.

"Do you have any proof as of now about this accusation?" The judge demanded.

"Not yet, but we just received information from a source claiming that they have proof about the falsification of the evidence and thus we request a continuance." The defendant was adamant in getting the continuance (A/N: Continuance - Go home come back later/ a delay/a break.)

"You do realise that if I grant you this and you come back with nothing and then you lose the case you will have to pay for the plaintiff's attorney fees and you will be fined for lying to a judge in court." The judge didn't want to grant a continuance but if the defendant needed time then he had to give it to them at least the first time, the chance of them getting a continuance without new evidence a second time will be next to none.

"We are 100% sure, all we need is a continuance to follow this line of enquiry, it is of utmost importance." The defendant went all out in order to get a delay from this case.

"Fine, let me check when I'm available." The judge has a schedule, each was different based on the cases they were taking.

"1 month 2 weeks from today, 1 March, come back then and we'll continue this case." The judge stated before getting up and leaving.

"What's that about? Are they allowed to just randomly say stuff and then delay the case?" Ronan was confused.

"Sure, but they need to find evidence if its's found out that they lied, then there's the chance that the lawyer in question will get disbarred and fined, although the chance of him getting fined is higher, but during this time they will likely contact me to settle so they don't have to come back and then they won't have to provide evidence, it's really unlucky though, you got either a fairly busy judge or he's taking a break for sometime and he won't be back until maybe 1 months time then he has other cases and he can only take us after, first come, first served and it seems were fairly late." Steve explained the circumstances and what needs to happen next to Ronan.

....

It took Ronan 2 hours to get home, he went back to Steve's office and talked with him for a while before getting a taxi home.

After arriving home Ronan got ready for bed, he was hyped up for days before getting there and all he did was sit and listen for around 20 minutes in which the judge just went on vacation and now he has to wait for 6 weeks.
