It was so precious! Kur couldn't help himself from smiling looking at Heron and Elswyth in their own little world. They looked so peaceful and there was something sweet in how Elswyth was just brushing her fingers through Heron's hair!
He was glad that Tira had suggested to him to go out like this. He would not have been able to see such a cute scene in the castle. It was truly a blessing to the eyes. He felt so happy their love seemed to be blossoming – though he wasn't sure but Heron was still in denial of it. That was okay though – Heron was too young anyway for marriage. Human boys needed to be eighteen before legally allowed to marry in Amriel.
He was old enough to be engaged at his age though. In prior generations it was common for the king to choose his children's partners way before they hit age really. However, the current king of Amriel was said to be rather doting towards his two children as they were all he had left of their mother. As such, it wasn't too surprising it seemed he was leaving it to their discretion on their life partners.
It was a good thing. As fun as those sorts of stories were in books were a man broke of the arrangement his parents were trying to stick him in, it would have been painful to watch in real life. He was glad that no such barrier would be there for his young friend.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his notebook, and happily jolted down this beautiful progress. He was really hopeful about their future. It looked bright. At least that was the impression he got today.
As he snapped shut the notebook and slipped it back into his pocket, his future brother-in-law dropped to sit beside him. Lowks seemed to be lost in thought, not entirely abnormal. He had grown quieter over the last few years, even more than his natural disposition. The half-elf would still have moments of playfulness though they had grown more sparse and he would sometimes go weeks in a bit of depressive gloom.
Due to Lowks's natural disposition not everyone noticed the depressive air that would at times cloak him. He was naturally quiet, while he would tease he only teased those he was close to, and was more apt to listen than put forth his own thoughts. And he never talked of his own deepest feelings. Still, there were a few who noticed. Kur had noticed the shift in attitude almost immediately, and so had his family.
Tira worried about him. Worried about the sting that was in her poor brother's heart. Kur too worried about it, worried that it would never be resolved. The thought of broken hope like that was one that just hurt to think about.
Sometimes, Kur wanted to meddle in the tangled affair, but while he could say something, it wasn't likely to be heeded by either party. Hopefully it wouldn't go on like this much longer.
"Is something the matter?" Kur finally said as Lowks had just been sitting quietly for a while now.
"Not exactly." He sighed, and was quiet for a few minutes. "I'm worried about being away overnight. What if she gets in trouble?"
"Tira mentioned to me Vixen would be with her mother all day. Surly what trouble would she get into?"
"Her mother doesn't stop her." He continued to fret.
"I would advise not to worry over it. Despite how she acts at times, she isn't an idiot. And I'm sure her mom would stop her from talking to any unsavory fellows."
"You're probably right." Lowks sighed, "She's still a good girl at heart. Still, it makes me nervous."
Kur patted his friend's shoulder with a smile. He was glad that overall his friend still had a good opinion of the woman he loved even if she was a bit foolish in her current behavior. She'd hopefully grow out of it soon as it really was not working out for her.
Preferably before Tira got utterly fed up with the situation. She was already upset over it, but had been biting her tongue. It would be so much easier if the girl wasn't acting foolishly. Then he could say something. But as it was Lowks wouldn't easily be convinced of what he wanted to tell him.
Anyway, that was what it was. Kur sighed and shook his head. There was not much he could do about it, as much as he would like to.
