Chereads / Prince of Secrets / Chapter 41 - The Blue Fairy

Chapter 41 - The Blue Fairy

Heron was a bit excited about meeting a fairy. Though he was not too sure about how to approach one. And she might be fed up with everyone just ogling her.

The fairy noticed him as he approached, but made no real indication of it disturbing her, much to his relief. Even though he was curious he would not want to sate his curiosity at the expense of others.

It was different if she was okay with it though. So he walked over and hesitated, wondering what the polite thing to say was.

It was the blue haired fairy though who spoke first, "Curious to meet a fey? We aren't very common on this continent."

At the friendly voice, Heron smiled, "So you are from the other continent! I was wondering."

"Yes. I can understand that curiosity. Our two continents are vastly different and its so interesting learning the difference. I mean…"

Her companion looked like he was getting a headache as she continued to prattle on. He muttered something incoherent under his breath.

"Oh!" After a few moments of prattling on about what she had been learning about this continent, the fey pulled up short, "We forgot to introduce ourselves, "I'm Diama and this surly knight is Sir Veldan. May I ask you and your lady's name?"

"Ah," Heron blinked, "I'm Prince Heron of Amriel and this is my friend Elswyth. She isn't my lady though."

"Really? You two would suit each other though." She tilted her head, "Ah well, I suppose you do look a bit young. Still there is something about an older woman with a young man."

….Heron had no way to react, but Sir Veldan got a weird look on his face and hit the back of her head. "Stop that. You're being weird again." He then turned to Heron and apologized on her behalf, "Forgive the fairy. Fey have a tendency to be overly interested in the affairs of others and often ask embarrassing questions."

"Really? None of my books mentioned that." Heron decided not to dwell on it. Fairy society was apparently really different than what he was used to though. "May I ask how you come to be here?" He turned back to the fairy who was more than willing to talk about herself.

"I came here as an ambassador of sorts." She said, "Its been a long time since we really had relations with this continent and out queen decided to see about setting about trade routes. I decided to do some sight seeing while I was here too! That's why I am here, even though this isn't as close to the sea route."

"Wrong side of the continent?"

"Bingo!"

"So, um, what is your continent like?"

"Different than this one by far. There are more kingdoms, and we don't have such a large alliance. Oh, some of the countries are allied but not to the extent here. But we also haven't destroyed any of each other."

That probably did look bad to an outsider. The fact that they had utterly destroyed one of their own once. But it had been necessary at the time. No matter how saddening the thought that they had a smoldering ruin now instead of their sixth kingdom it had been done for the safety of everyone.

She continued chatting about her continent. Mostly her own kingdom, which was made up almost entirely of different fey races. She talked of customs, of society, of the ways of fairykind. It was different than any of the kingdoms. Religion was one of the biggest differences. Unlike the kingdoms, her people were not all that religious.

Eventually Heron bid the fairy farewell and walked away with Elswyth. He was happy though about learning what he had. Elswyth seemed happy just to be done with it though, and muttered, "She talks a lot."

"That just means it was quite informative talking to her!"

Elswyth didn't answer but just smiled a bit wryly. Heron knew that she wasn't as interested as he was but that she had put up with it for his sake. And it made him feel a bit warm that she was willing to do that for him. She could have walked off, but she had stayed at his side and listened with him. Even though it had probably grated on her.
