Chapter 4 - The First Steps

I open my eyes after a long slumber and scan the area. I realise that nothing has been changed.

That's mildly surprising. I was certain that someone would have at least tried to kill me while I slept.

I stand up and notice that I am weaker than the last I was awake.

Why? What happened? I wasn't moved and neither was anything else. Was it because of my rest?

I step outside to find the neighbouring planets are expanding at an alarming rate. It doesn't look like the land itself is increasing, is that machinery? It is. The inhabitants of those planets are using what looks like new technology to extend their reach. This can only mean one thing. The Balance has been disturbed since I was last awake. The Alpha has fallen and so has his Champion. This could be catastrophic.

I reach into my pocket and pull out a small, dark marble. Despite its size and appearance, it is incredibly useful. It is the All-Seeing Eye, one of the Twelve Remnants.

Remnants are powerful items forged from residual energy from the birth of the universe. Each Remnant has its own power, one which no other can replicate. Having any one of the Remnants can give one unimaginable power if used well.

The All-Seeing Eye is the only Remnant with access to all information in existence. It was imbued with the soul of the first Watcher, the one who saw all things from the beginning to the present day.

There are only twelve Remnants in existence, scattered throughout the vastness of the cosmos. Should all twelve Remnants unite, the one who gathered them would be in possession of enough power to destroy all of the universe and much, much more.

With this Eye, I can find what I need to restore the Balance. The Eye doesn't just open in command, though. For that, I need the sacred words to activate it.

I lightly throw the Remnant in the air and speak the ancient words of activation, "ער, כלי קדוש!"

The black marble is being surrounded by runes that no one can decipher, slowly releasing the seals that kept the Eye closed. Once the Eye opened, it spoke, "What is it that you seek, Omega?"

"The Balance is disturbed, Remnant. You know what I seek." I know that you know what I want, you're the All-Seeing Eye, for crying out loud!

"The next Titan of Order," it states as it descends to my eye-level.

"What do you know of the next Alpha?" I need to know, otherwise, the entirety of Existence will be in grave danger.

"That she is not ready. Too weak of a warrior to assume the position. At her rate of evolution, she won't be prepared for another millennium."

"But that would be too late!" I exclaim, "by then all of Existence would have fallen into Chaos!"

"Too late indeed, Omega. Chaos would have already taken over and no life shall be left." Why does it speak in such an uncaring tone? Even if the universe is in danger, do Remnants not care at all?

It's not over yet, I can make arrangements to train them. For that, I need to know who it is, "Who is this next Alpha?"

"I cannot speak the name as I am unable to. All I can describe about the next Alpha is that it is a female with silver hair."

I try to piece together who it might be. I've got an idea, but I need to know one more detail to be sure, "Where is she located at this current moment?"

"She is currently located within the Base of the Holy Knights."

"I knew it! It's Silvia, isn't it? She's the next Titan?"

"I do not know, Omega, I know all but specific names." That struck me as an odd detail. Do Remnants have some sort of limit to what they can do?

"That doesn't make sense, you're the Remnant that contains all information."

"That is false, Omega," it says in the same monotonous voice but louder, "whoever told you that I did must've misinformed you. I am the Remnant that contains all information in the Library of Existence. The Library contains all but one book, the Book of Life, so I do not have access to names."

I stay in silence for a few moments, trying to digest all of the information given to me.

"There seems to be no more you wish to ask, farewell for now." The Remnant's Eye closed shut and all the seals return, it has reverted to being a peculiar black marble. I place it in my pocket and begin thinking of a plan.

"So the next Titan is Silvia, but at her rate of growth, she would have died of old age before ever even coming close to attaining the power of the Alpha. I need to do something... but what? I am the 'malevolent' enemy to the Holy Knights so I can't just barge in and force her to train. I would have been shot down a light-year before I get there." I pace around the ruins, trying to formulate a plan to train her secretly. You could say a light bulb shone above my head because I just got a plan.

I activate the All-Seeing Eye once more to give it a command. A command that will be the key to training Silvia.

"Remnant, bring me Thana-" I got cut off by a noise of movement within the ruins.

"There is no need to ask the Remnant, my Titan," a mysterious figure walks into the light and pulls down its hood, "I'm right here." The figure reveals itself to be my loyal subordinate, Thanatos. He looks me dead in the eyes with a smirk on his face.

"Thanatos, I have a job for you."

"To train the girl, isn't it?" he knew exactly what I wanted, like always.

"You know me well enough to know why."

"Of course, my Titan. You need that girl to be strong enough to be able to fulfill the job of the Alpha, am I right?"

"When haven't you been?" I add. Not only is he reliable, but he also has the mind of the greatest detective in the universe.

"When I thought I could best you in a battle for the position of Omega. I was completely wrong about that."

"That was many years ago, Thanatos," since the previous Omega died prematurely, warriors had to fight for the position. I won, but that shouldn't mean that no one can challenge me, "you're always welcome to challenge me for the position. Remember, the power of the Omega is transferred to whoever defeated the current Omega."

"I'll pass. I'd rather keep my life," he says with a bit of a shaky voice.

"Wise choice," I like how he knows which battles he should or should not fight, "I trust that you know what the most effective training is."

"Train her with increasingly difficult foes so that she will evolve quickly, just like in video games."

I nod my head to him, giving him permission to do what he needs to.

"I will not disappoint you, my Titan," he says as he bows down.

"I know you won't, Thanatos. There's a reason I summoned you."

He disappears into the shadows and I make my way back to my throne. I better rest some more, I'm getting weaker. The Alpha's death really is taking a toll on me.

The first steps are about to be taken.
