"Your life is perfectly fine Derick, there is nothing wrong with having hair a voice and a body like yours, they are all just jealous." This is what my mom tells me every time she thinks someone is talking about me. "Mom, I didn't say anything." I walk past the Kitchen where my mom was making Dinner, Papa is going to be mad if she doesn't make the Tamales she promised him. My dad is from Panama and my mom is from America, so there are huge debates on what we have for dinner each night. "Derick, can you get the flour out of the pantry!" Just when I was about to go to my room. "yes Ma'am." I go to the pantry and get the flour. "Fried fish again, you know dad hates the taste." she doesn't get it does she? "well then he just doesn't eat, that's how we're gonna solve that problem, did you finish packing yet, you know we have to leave tomorrow right."
"yes I finished packing, but do you really want me to go to Prestbrook elementary, you're so worried about me getting bullied here, it's worse down there." My mom just nodded her head and pointed to the steps. I left the kitchen and went to my room, and lay on my bed. "oh Dios mío." ¿Cómo voy a establecer mi vida en la Primaria Presbrook? I thought to myself. For some reason, it takes me an extra-long to understand Spanish then it does my dad. He says it's an issue, my mom says it just means I'm more black than Hispanic, my teacher says it's because of the fact that I have a Hispanic father and lived in Panama for a short amount of time. She has a more logical answer. Sooner or later I fell asleep. "Derick! ¡Estoy en casa! I'm home!" I immediately sit up and jet out of bed. I run down the steps and give my father a big hug. "Papá, ¡no sabía que ibas a venir tan temprano!" all my dad did was laugh, as my mom stood there with a smile on her face. "time to eat you two." we go to the table and my dad quickly leaves the dining room. "I guess he isn't eating, well you eat up so that you have enough energy tomorrow, we pack and we leave." I eat my food and head upstairs to get ready for bed. I lay there thinking about what tomorrow brings.
