Chapter 4 - surviving is not easy

"come on... why is it still going on?"

'As the rain continued, the forest had an enchanting aura. Giant white cap mushrooms were growing at an alarming rate, only to be plucked by me. I saw multiple animals nibble on them so I figured they're safe to eat.

I don't know how to light a fire though, so that will have to wait for now. I read about flint stones and stuff of the sort though.

I think I could light one once I encounter someone who'll teach me.'

'After I found the cave a few hours ago, all I did was check the cave and go to scavenge food.

I tried reading the dictionary Asu left me, but I was genuinely bored by learning the language and I wanted to try and understand more of my stats. After going over them I realized that the way to become a mage is to focus on INT and WIS. For now, food and water are the only things that matter so he won't be able to actually focus on that.

I wonder how I can elevate my INT... guess I'll have to find out on my own.'

"It seems like the rain is calming, I guess I can do one last check."

The cave was an upward-curved entrance at the bottom of a little hill, which made it a perfect place to hide from the rain. It looked like a mouth with a long nose above it.

"I got two big mushrooms, half a meter each so I guess I'll be able to feed myself for now... I don't think the mushrooms contain enough nutrition for me to survive.

I must get meat, some sharp rocks and maybe a few big branches. I wonder how I can ignite a fire in the wild."

'maybe I would be able to find flint, I read that flint can cause sparks if you bang them together.

I need to get some wood and try to find some flint, assuming it exists here.

But... I don't know how Flint looks like.

Well, I guess some experiments are due.'

'And so, as the rain calmed and reduced to light drops, I began wandering close to the cave.

Apparently, the rain has managed to break a few branches and there was a whole tree that fell on another tree.

So, I managed to collect 14 branches, all of them 1 meter long. I carried them to the cave, but after 4 minutes of walking back and forth, a strange floating line that reminded me of my status board appeared.

{STR +1}

"Eh? EH?! It's too easy! I just carried some branches, it wasn't that much of a workout.

If that kind of workout is all I need to raise my strength stat, I wonder how I can raise my INT stat."

"Well, let's put it down and try to find some hard rocks. It is getting way too cold."

While being an elf helps Fang acclimate better, it still is chilly weather.

As Fang left the cave once again, making sure the mushrooms were safe under the branches, his foot hit a strange object.

'The fuck! That felt dangerous, my god.'

"It seems like there is something half-buried here, it's poking a bit."

As Fang was moving it with his leg, he felt that it was a hard object. He proceeded to put his right hand on it and pulled. As some of it budged out of its place, Fang wiped the light rain drops off his eyes to try and identify what he was holding.

As he pulled it again it seemed like a long stick of some sort but after he brushed it became clear it was a sword handle, to be exact a katana. The handle was pitch black, a bit rusty, and wrapped in rugged cloth that was clearly made to create friction.

Fang gave it a hard yank and it was freed from the muddy ground.

he pulled a katana the length of an arm, long enough to be wielded by two hands but still light enough to be carried by one. The balance was perfect, a bit heavy at the tip but Fang couldn't discern if it was on purpose. Fang brushed from the handle to the tip with his left hand, making sure to check if the blade was useable.

"It looks like it can be used, but I must sharpen it. Why would there even be a sword buried here, especially one that looks from a Japanese book?"

'I have to find some rugged rocks or I'll freeze to death. Fire. I must light a fire.'

Fang has carried the katana with his right hand while putting little rough rocks in his pocket. After a few minutes, he received another message:

{LUC +1}

"This is way too easy, I can't believe I can improve my stats by picking rocks... maybe the reason was the sword? I thought it was weird I found such a thing but even luck is a stat in this world."

Fang started heading back towards the cave, trying to walk through the thick mud that dominated the forest.

After a few minutes, the cave began to come into sight but there was something different... There was a weird aura around the cave.

"Is there something in there? I better be careful." He said while readying his katana in a stab position, feeling as ready as he could be. Slowly walking near the entrance Fang hears an ominous growl. It sounded like a snore but a throaty growl as well, which only made Fang more alert. His knees shake, knowing that he's just a little boy from Earth who is at the bottom of the food chain.

Fang took a step in, peeking through the wide entrance and he saw a beast lying in its own blood.

It looked like a really fat pig but at the same time had a head that resembled a bull. It had two horns, both of those horns broken and jagged.

Fang got closer, making sure his steps were muffled by his careful walking lest the beast would awake.

He saw two opportunities:

One was leveling up.

He was curious to see the effects of a level-up. The second one is securing himself a piece of meat for the night.

If he manages to slay it before it gets up he will get the chance to survive his first day!

'Quiet now, I must focus. If I go to his neck I might be able to cut its head off... God, I hope it won't spray blood all over me or something, I don't have change clothes.'

"OK. let's do it." He whispered to himself as he was making his resolution.

Approaching the beast with profound fake confidence, He raised his sword and breathed in quietly...

The pop was heard in the cave. It sounded like a few bones were broken.

Fang sliced through the pig but the sword got stuck a few inches into its neck yet The beast was dead for sure.

Fang sat on the ground next to it, he tried to relax a bit but then came a message:

{WIS+ 1}

"I got smarter 'cause I killed it? Maybe it was the whole part of me planning carefully and thinking about every move. I guess I found another method to raise my stats but I better start butchering this pig/bull animal quick."

The katana sword still lodged in the pig's neck was pulled out by Fang. Fang inspected it for a few seconds and he didn't see any chipping on the blade nor any damages seen to the naked eye.

"I guess it is just really durable, but I need to sharpen it quick. I can't use it with stealth if I can't finish the job with one hit."

Fang exited the cave so he could wash the sword in a little puddle generated by the intense rain.

After a few minutes, he returned to the cave to start butchering the pig but he understood he did not know butchering nor meat. He was hardly allowed to eat on earth, what does he know about meat?

He just cut off the legs of the pig, still leaving the thighs attached and the blood began flowing like a river. Fang understood that it needed to be cleaned as well so he took the legs to the puddle and washed it a bit while trying to skin them but he found out that he removed some meat while skinning it.

After almost 20 minutes, he got back to the cave with 4 huge pork whole legs, from the thighs down but he removed the feet as it looked gross.

{Butchering +1}

Taking two sharp rough rocks, he started hitting them together trying to make it warmer from the friction. After a few tries, he found out that it was indeed possible to light a fire with them cause they make sparks if he Hit them correctly.

The wood branches are dry for quite some time now so he chopped them with the katana and made a little pile of wooden blocks, the size of a fist each.

"Come on... just give me a few sparks, that's all I need."

Shivering in the cold, Fang kept on hitting the rocks until the long-awaited spark came by.

The fire was slow and low as the flames consumed the little leaves in the pile.

While waiting for the fire to maintain itself, fang found a few big rocks and surrounded the fire with them.

"Finally it came to a real flame. I never thought I would be this happy by fire since I used the fire to escape my parents' house."

'I need to put the meat on the flames somehow... I have a few branches left, I don't know if I should waste the dry branches on it.'

Fang once again got out to forage for some branches and he successfully impaled the pork legs with the katane to make a hole for pushing the branch in.

He hung it above the fire with the branch sitting on the stones above.

"Day one is over, I hope tomorrow will be easier."

That night Fang ate charred spice-less meat but he still thought it tasted great.

comforted by warmth and meat the first day is over.
