Chapter 12 - “Everyone Vs Knightmare-Grimm”

For quite some time while Walker and Knightmare-Grimm were fighting, I was still sorting myself out for a while after I'd left my real body.

I had forgotten to mention this before because I had also forgotten at the time but before I left that flat hoping to meet Walker instead of this Knightmare-Grimm monster, I had taken my custom made computer tablet with me. It was totally coincidental but proved crucial to my plan to stop Knightmare-Grimm destroying Walker and other innocent bystanders in the city. The combination of Grimm and Knightmare seem to make both of them worse as the whole. Their two different kinds of deviousness complementing each other, to make a higher level of evil. Racked with guilt over my contribution to the creation of this heinous monster, I focused on trying to suppress my feelings of panic and helping Walker stop him.

I grabbed my tablet before leaving my real body in the cupboard. In a room, on the top floor, I heard some shouts and instructions. It sounded like rehearsals were being conducted but I did not have time to investigate what sort of establishment I had left my real body in. It sounded if they were about to run out of the room. They had noticed something on the street. I quickly flew down the stairs in my avatara form. Outside the side entrance where I came in, I heard the commotion. It was much more than before. I could hear people shouting and several people were running down the alleyway.

A woman was running with her daughter, whose eyes caught my own. The girl stared at me and gave a broad smile. She pointed at me.

"Look mum it's a fairy."

Her mother like all the other adults continued running not noticing my glimmering form on the side of the alley way. Unable to see what is around them because of their fear and need for security. The difference between adults and children, I guess. Adults see with their eyes, children see with their minds.

Anyway I'm getting distracted again, time to focus. After getting out to the street what I needed was a bird's eye view. I flew up in the sky above Piccadilly Circus, quick enough that I felt cold air pass behind my ears

I saw it all, the police cars, a helicopter, lots of onlookers moving and shouting frantically. Getting in the way and making work harder for the police. How many of them are wearing headphones? How many have alpha phones? I need a lot of both, if this plan was going to work.

Walker! There he is trying to fight. Knightmare-Grimm is too strong. No, ok, I must be quick.

My tablet screen. I use a special program on it that is very flexible, allowing me to hijack other programs and change their base code and user permissions at will. A copy of the avatara program was on the hard drive of the tablet. I don't think I would have had much of a plan if I did not accidentally have this tablet on me, but with it I can code.

You want to know my plan? It's crazy, but there's no other way to stop this monstrous Knightmare-Grimm concoction. The Knightmare-Grimm avatara is so powerful because Byron Grimm and Knightmare are connected directly to the Sheldrake's servers containing the Avatara Kernel making their avatara very stable and much stronger than mine or Walker's. I also noticed that they must have used high grade programmable dust available at Sheldrake that allows for strong bonding of the information packets of the avatara, making its structure harder to destroy.

Plus there is two of them inside the avatara, that means they have double the power with two minds in one. And with Knightmare being talented enough to manipulate codes in avatara form, which is not easy to do, all of these things make it almost impossible to beat this monster.

However, although they cannot be beaten by either me or Walker, or both of us, they can be overwhelmed if there are enough avatara together. Like hundreds of avatara. The police and onlookers are also useless in real form, as they cannot harm an avatara that way, especially one as strong as Knightmare-Grimm. But if I give them all avatara abilities together we might be able to hold him and hopefully stop him.

After all this reflection, I convinced myself it was a good plan but who am I kidding? A well thought out ridiculous plan is still a ridiculous plan but there were no other good options.

I could surrender myself to Grimm but then he would get the kernel codes and if I gave him that, he would be a security risk not only for the country but for the whole world.

Ok. Here we go. Copy my Avatara app into the application download store for alpha phones. Bypassing the app store security encryptions. There is no time to ask alpha company for permission to use their phones to share Avatara. I will close it down afterwards anyway if they don't.

Now I need to find a way to hack the Piccadilly lights. That world famous big screen that displays over the circus. It's a 4K digital screen that captures attention with adverts. It's forty five metres wide and eighteen metres high. The company who owns it has extreme firewall security to prevent it being hacked. I hate doing this type of hacking, it's the lowest of the low. But there's no time for pride now. I need to override its software and its cameras. I'm being so cheeky, that I am hacking their service whilst using their own wireless connection.

I don't have much time but I need to put up an advert to make these people want to download Avatara on their phone and use it to become avatara. Make them all gang up on Knightmare-Grimm. Individually their avatara will be weak but together they'll be strong, like a pack of hyenas fighting one lion.

A couple more lines of code to pretend this is an honest request to use the screen. Enter in that avatara is a product that would be of interest to everyone from the age of eighteen to seventy and the screen will show my advert instead of any other.

Done.

Ok. Come on….

Yes there is. Now if you could see the screen right now here's what it would say.

"Do you want to be a superhero? Download this app and listen. It's called Avatara. You will be able to fight this villain. Cash prize of £100 000 for beating him. Give up the rat race. Do something special today."

That should do it.

I do not know how many people would go for it but there are hundreds of them still around. At least fifty of them should be enough to take Knightmare-Grimm. Come on. Yes, some of them are pointing. Oh gosh, some of them are pointing at me.

"Download it!" I shouted. I lowered myself closer to the ground for a moment. "Put on your headphones and you will become an avatara like me." I had not rehearsed the sales pitch but people were amazed to see me in the sky. Then I heard cries from the police officers ahead who had formed a barricade of cars around Piccadilly Circus. Knightmare-Grimm was firing bullets at their cars.

By now quite a few people had put on their headphones and were downloading. This just might work. How many of them were doing it? Maybe fifty. Let me have a quick look around. I'm too far in this now, maybe the cameras will pick me up, I see some people have tried to take photos of me. Luckily, avatara do not show up well photo or video because the form is volatile and the particles are moving really fast. I will just show up as a glimmering refractive shiny object.

I fly up higher in the air, to get a better idea of what's going on. Oh no! Knightmare-Grimm is closing on Walker. Move Walker! Move! Damn, he can't. I have got to distract him, hopefully, some people will become avatara after seeing the advert, maybe even the police officers. Good! On my tablet its telling me that over a hundred people have downloaded it.

"Hey!" I shouted towards Knightmare-Grimm's direction. He turned to look up at me, his mouth was wide and menacing. How had I never noticed his evilness when I worked for him? I must be a poor judge of character. My adrenaline was pumping, so I could notice all my random thoughts at once. It was like time was slowing down.

"If you want me, come and get me!" Knightmare-Grimm looked up at me and I took a quick picture of his face with my tablet. I added it to the advert. An arrow on the big screen pointing to the face of Knightmare-Grimm as the villain.

He moved so quick for a moment I froze. His avatara was so powerful and was flying towards me at lightning speed. I better move. I flew down to the ground and landed on the pavement at Piccadilly opposite a bookstore. In the window were copies of a newly released book called 'The Flying Nanoman.' It seems science fiction is really in fashion right now, maybe I will write a book called 'Avatara' once this is all over.

Yet again I was not fully focused. Crash! Knightmare-Grimm's feet smash into the pavement I have just left. I thought he wanted me alive? Is he trying to kill me?

"That was a slow reaction Grace, I could have killed you and I would not want that. We would not want that...we need you. I need you." Their combined personality sounded unstable but from the voice and mannerisms it was clear that Grimm was mostly in control.

"You should let Knightmare go Byron," I said. "He is just a kid."

Knightmare-Grimm let out a roar of laughter. I staggered back a few more steps. He's faster than me so I can't fly away. I will have to wait for him to commit to a pounce towards me and when he does I will dodge out of the way.

"No one is innocent here Miss Shelley," Knightmare-Grimm said. "I have access to the boy's memories and we now what he is about. He is a thief and a pyromaniac besides being a computer genius. He thought he could play with fire before he met me. Now he is now part of we. I will never let him go, as far as his computer abilities go, they are nearly as good as yours. Which means I have that power. I honour him in name, as Knightmare-Grimm but it is I as Grimm that is in control and my I is now our we. Yes I is we."

It was a great stalling tactic, getting him to talk, and if there's one thing I've always known about Byron Grimm is that he loves to talk. That long monologue was proof that he really was in control of that thing.

Still, I was not safe, just within his clutches now and Grimm is so persuasive when he is close to you. Dribbling mouth aside, his words are smooth and seductive, almost a power unto themselves and before I realised how creepy he was, I found him quite charming.

"I always believed in you Grace. Even when no one else did. We are connected in time and space. You are beauty and I am the beast." He was closing in on me and it seemed there was nothing I could do.

"Now it is time to come--"

He was cut short. Out of nowhere hundreds of avatara appeared. Of all shapes and sizes. One was huge and looked like a caveman with a club. One was man but with the head of a lion, with claws at the end of his fingers instead of nails. Another was a samurai, the other a sumo wrestler and one other was a native American. Why? I don't know. But they were here and there were many more, all jumping at Knightmare-Grimm. My ridiculous plan worked. The calvary had arrived.
