Chapter 17 - Alone in the dark

Raven and Siren were both in the dark tunnel. Some brave creatures tried to attack them on multiple occasions, but Raven made quick work of them. The walls were getting more and more black and covered with this substance.

„I like this less and less." Said Raven as he tried his best not to step in the black goo that covered the ground. Even the light that Siren had cast became dimmer and dimmer.

Siren was casually walking in front and while holding her shield of golden energy, she seemed a bit more on edge then before. It was almost like this whole hall was suffocating for her.

„Are you alright?" asked Raven, his scythe hitting the ground with a loud click sound.

„Yeah, I'm fine, I am not good with tight places…" she answered mid breath.

The wind felt like breathing cold water, unpleasant for both, Raven's wings, as large as they were, quivered a bit with the cold. It was damp, and suddenly, a quiet dripping sound echoed throughout the cave. As they neared it, it grew louder and louder, the cave before them stopped as they entered a large chamber , hidden deep beneath the ground.

The room was quite big, about hundred meters in diameter with a collumn in the center. It reached the roof of the cavern and a set of five chains connected it to the walls and floor. As they came closer and inspected the chains, they saw that the chains were adamantite. A metal so rare, that not even gods knew if it even existed. The stories about this material are well known among the Laxorians. It's black color is iconic for the blades forged with it. Victor's sword and Raven's scythe are made out of adamantite, as opposed to the more traditional lazurite which is more of a traditional material for Laxoria.

„What is all this?" asked Siren as she looked around the chamber. Raven didn't answer, he was inspecting the chains, trying to figure out, why they are here.

„This cavern-„ he said after a while „Has been dug out before. But not by the denizens of Revise. The walls, roof even the floor were carved by tools that are too complex and delicate then those of the common miner."

„Who or what do you think carved it then?"

„To be perfectly honest, I don't know. And I would like it to stay it that way." He pointed towards the chains. „These chains are made out of adamantide. A very durable metal with one special property. When struck by rust, large amount of force, or corrosion, the metal spreads itself instead. Which would explain why they dug so deep. Adamantide is extremely versatile and by the amount of it here, this must have been motherload."

„They have dug too deep." Said Siren quietly to herself.

The chamber started to rumble. Both of them prepared themselves, Raven with his scythe in front and to his back, Siren with her light powers. The globules of light started to burn brighter and brighter. The floor, wall and the roof , covered with the black substance, started to move and change. It was a very nausiating sight, but not enough for them to be put off-guard. What happened next, however, was unexpected.

The walls themselves started to lash out on the two. The substance started to coagulate and shoot out in black thorny tentacles towards the pair. They evaded the barrier projected by Siren and went towards Raven. With one swing, he cut the things in half, but it was not enough. The entrance started to be overgrown by their attacker. Almost like roots that bar the entry after a long time.

„We need to get out. QUICKLY!" yelled Siren as she grabbed Raven's hand and started to move him towards their only way out. He opposed at first, but relized that it was a better plan. As they neared the exit, the „vines" started to spread faster and faster. Even their legs started to be wrapped and grapled by the floor. Raven started to lose his patience.

„Oh for storm's sake!" he cried out loud and lift himself up thanks to his wings. When they were flying towards Revise, Raven noticed that her one wing was injured. She could keep up with him, but he didn't hurry, she on the other hand had to catch up to him pretty regularly. He swooped her off her feet and like a princess he carried her towards the entry that still being closed.

„You have got to be kidding me!" she yelled and prepared for impact. Raven was more optimistic and braced for stylish getaway.

The small gap was getting even smaller and Raven was still picking up speed. At this point, Siren closed her eyes. Raven grid his teeth and expected a really painfull way of exit.

It was dark for a moment. And a small crackling sound could be heard. It was still dark, yet Raven could still feel the breece on his face. He still held Siren in his arms, and was not touching the ground. He looked up and saw light. A very bright light. He flew towards it, like a moth towards a lantern. Once they escaped they both collapsed on the ground and Siren put a strong barrier, almost instinctively she stood up and held her hands towards the entrance to the mine. A large batch of vines wanted to go after them, but the barrier held strong.

„You have another plan?" asked Siren in a strained voice.

Raven looked at the entrance and thought. He grabbed his scythe and threw it above the entrance. As it was flying, it started to rotate. As it reached the entrance, it looked more like a sawblade then a big chunk of metal on top of a rod. It carved out a giant portion of the rock above and flew back towards its owner. The rock fell down with a loud sound and a cloud of dust. Siren cought as Raven flapped his wings and disperced the cloud. Siren looked up and smiled.

„That was your plan?"

„It worked, plus, we are both alive, and we now know what the source is."

„We do?"

„Yes…but, we are not strong enough to destroy it. Come-„ he reached out his hand to help her stand up. „Your mistress will need to hear about this."

Siren accepted the offered hand and together, they flew back towards Luna.
