Chapter 5 - 5 Oh, HI

(Wait. I have no idea how far eight-star point actually is.)

"oh"

(I was actually on my way to Signal C...maybe I shouldn't let this distract me so easily)

Deaxter was looking at his compass. It rotated like a crazy helicopter.

(Oh by the way The continents have a crazy magnetic field... crap.)

He looks at his PDA, which kindly orients itself at the antenna and not at the magnetic field. This showed him that he had actually moved closer to his destination. It was now only 4 hours away. Only now he noticed how long he had been on the road. He had drunk and eaten several ration bars on the way. But the longest pauses consisted of the investigations of the lake and the bridge. He looked at his feet, which began to hurt as if ordered.

He laid down his backpack and lay down next to the road in the yellow grass.

He had been lying in the sun for quite a while, shining brightly but not particularly strongly.

When he heard footsteps, they were very quiet. The rustling of grass was also audible. His hand immediately went to his weapon.

He was very aware that the steps were very short. It matched his idea of how a cat sounds in the high grass. Whereby a real cat would be much quieter. Then he saw the grass moving. He concentrated now only on the moving stalks.

Whatever is going on there, it's coming towards him.

Almost there

He began to aim

When a little animal stretched its head through the grasses. It had a yellow orange fur and Deaxter immediately felt reminded of a fox. Whereby the head shape resembled more a raccoon.

The animal noticed Deaxter and stared at him for several seconds. When it released from its paralysis and with a shrill scream, almost a squiek. Running away.

(That was sweet)

Deaxter stand up and could see the stalks of grass shaking. It ran a good bit, then the stalks stopped moving.

(And away it is)

Deaxter looked at the clock.

(A little more than an hour rest. That should be enough)

He stretched himself again, then put on the backpack again.

"Maybe we'll see each other again!

He waved in the direction where he suspected the little animal. Then he went on towards signal C again.

The way to the eight-star-point went in the same direction as signal C. So he stayed on the path.

(Wouldn't surprise me if signal C was from eight star point.)

The path abruptly changed to a cobblestone. After that it didn't take long for a city to come into sight. At least he guessed it was a city. The possible buildings were angular blocks. And everything was surrounded by a Great Wall.

Deaxter pulled down his goggles. He zoomed in with it. To his disappointment, the city was a ruin. Some buildings were ruined. The wall was damaged. Even though it wasn't completely destroyed, in fact it was in pretty good shape even for an abandoned city. Similar to the bridge. But on the streets nobody was to be seen. No light was burning. Although that was probably not necessary during the day. It just didn't look occupied.

The glasses put back again, he went to the gate of the city. When he came closer he could not but admire the craft. Everything was made of stone and a 15m wide staircase led to a large stone arch. The architectural style reminded him of the Roman, when all curves were replaced by hard edges. Even the mentioned arch consisted of steps.

The stairs steps were very flat, perhaps a hand's width high. They were also very low. Which caused Deaxter to take either unpleasant large or many small steps.

(What did the inhabitants look like?)

For the time being he followed the main street which led to a large area without detours. In the middle was a fountain. It consisted of a heap of dice. Pyrite came to his mind again when he looked at it. The figure was so constructed that it seemed as if the cubes had grown into each other. Underneath was a square pool. There was even a liquid in it. Uncertain whether the green liquid is really water, he took a sample.

Then he heard a cough behind him.

He jumped pike over the well, pulling both pistols. The landing made sure that his goggles landed on his nose again.

He looked with the camera, which is part of the pistol's visor over the edge of the well basin.

11 meters away from him stood a figure over 2 meters high.

This hooded man had a coat that went down to the ground. The clothes worried Deaxter. They stocked completely of scales, as of a snake. A washed-out dark green. Also the hands and feet were surrounded by these snake scales. All this shed clothing was in a terrible state. Like torn bandages they hung on his body. The face was hidden under more shed bandages. With the exception of a Great Yellow Eye. This was like a yellow stone in the middle of the face shining from the inside out. Deaxter was not sure what he found more creepy, that he could not distinguish the fingers of his hands from the bandages or the searchlight threatening eye.

The figure did not react, she only looked at his weapon. At least that's what he guessed. He decided to leave his cover. He glimpsed the surroundings to see if there were any more designs to be seen. But there was no one else.

Only now did he notice the deformity of the head shape of his neighbor. It looked as if he was wearing a hat with a big brim under it. The figure also had a hump? No a backpack, though hard to recognize. The backpack was definitely made of a different material. Leather? In grey?

Even when Deaxter stood up, the figure moved only slightly. The yellow eye seemed to follow every movement. But the figure was frozen.

(Maybe he is in shock...like me)

As Deaxter began to walk in arc around the figure, it moved. Unbelievably slow, but it turned. Deaxter stopped again and had now moved 2 meters away from the well.

(AND WHAT DO I DO NOW?)
