Chapter 6 - 6 Glitch Bird

He has had an incredible anticipation of making the first contact with an alien species. Now that it's really happened. He has no idea what to do.

Almost all he can do can be an insult to him. Even if his counterpart is much more human than Deaxter had expected. After all, he was humanoid and even wears clothes. That was no guarantee that they would think alike. Even the differences in human cultures can be enough to make communication impossible.

(Maybe I shouldn't panic. But a wrong gesture could lead to a fight?! Or even start a war?! Maybe he is an ambassador? What if he came to me because I was separated from the main ship? Maybe we are already at war and he is here to kill or to capture me?! Probably to torture me to tell secrets!)

The figure continued to show no reaction during Deaxter's internal panic attack. While he was still thinking about how to solve this situation, a bird landed between the two. Now landing was an exaggeration. The bird seemed to fidget over the ground as if it was having a stroke. The wriggling stopped after a few seconds.

The bird reminded of a ball. This feather ball with two big eyes and small beak apparently didn't mind that Deaxter and the figure having a staring competition. Quite the opposite. The bird walked to the strange figure. Whereby ``walked´´ was a seemingly uncontrolled fidgeting and rolling.

The figure was turning away from Deaxter's and watched the bird as it performed its stroke. When the fidgeting stopped, the bird was not even half a meter away from the figure. He reached under his coat with one hand and threw a handful of crumbs at the little animal. With an unbelievable energy the little animal started to pick up every crumb.

From the figure came a sound that sounded like a quiet sneeze.

"Bless you" it came reflex-like from Deaxter.

Which caused the figure's gaze to go from the bird to him again.

(oh no)

The figure looked at Deaxter for a while, but then turned back to the bird.

Deaxter regained some of his calmness.

(I can't stand here forever, ok, hope this doesn't go wrong)

With all his courage he went to the figure, he was just over a meter away from the figure when he stopped. The figure turned to Him again.

(And what shall I say now?)

The figure reached under hir coat again. While Deaxter began to sweat.

(I didn't think that through!)

The figure threw the bird food at him.

"ah! Huh?"

Deaxter looked down on himself, whereupon a considerable portion of bird food fell from his head. Without thinking about it he tried to catch something. Which succeeded surprisingly well. With the bird food in his hand, he looked confusedly up at the figure.

(He tried to feed me???)

It looked at him with a facial expression that could not be deciphered. Maybe because it simply does not exist. Deaxter began to collect the bird food from himself. When something was picking at his shoe. The bird had sat down on his shoe and began to eat the grains with the usual elan.

Deaxter looked at his hand, in which a small pile of grains had accumulated.

(What do I do with it now? I have no idea if I can eat that at all.)

Deaxter put a piece in his pocket, then he crouched down slowly. The bird that had already jumped off his shoe again began to pick the grains around him. The bird didn't seem to mind when Deaxter stretched his hand with the food to the bird. The bird now began even richer than before to hammer his head into the grains again and again. He swallowed as many grains as possible with each attack.

The coat wearer made the sound that sounded like a sneeze again. Deaxter scattered the grains in front of the bird and stand up.

(Ok, I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to kill me. What happens if I give him something?)

He pulled something out of his jacket. It was one of the ration bars.

(Hopefully I won't poison him with it)

The packaging pulled off. He handed the figure the bar. This one began to bend down and look at the bar. Then it straightened up again and made a clicking noise.

(um, maybe he doesn't understand that I want to give it to him?)

Deaxter took the bar in his hand like he did with the bird food. And tried again to give it to the figure.

It sneezed again and took the bar. At the same time it seemed to pay attention not to touch Deaxter.

He was happy that the figure had understood his gesture. What he didn't expect was what the figure would do now. It broke the bar in two. One half It put under his coat. The other one threw it behind Deaxter. When Deaxter turned around there were 3 more birds picking on the ground. These did not have grey feathers, but coloured ones. Yellow, green and blue. Like Canary birds.

These fidgeted to the bar and started hammering like woodpeckers. When the figure saw that the birds had liked the bar it made the sneezing noise again.

(Ok, that's definitely not a sneeze. A laugh? Maybe I can get some information about the surroundings)

"You probably can't understand me anyway. But if I could talk to you like that, maybe you would notice that I'm trying to talk to you?

The figure turned to Deaxter, but showed no further reaction.

"I'm looking for people who look like me" Deaxter pointed to himself and looked around.

(I doubt he saw anyone but maybe he understands what I mean? Certainly not)

The figure turned away and walked along the main road. Just as Deaxter thought he had managed to scare his partner away. It He stayed standing and made a wink movement that looked strong after ` come here ´ or ` come with ´.

As soon as he started walking in the direction of the coat wearer. It turned his back to him again and walked along the street.
