Chapter 7 - Annoying Grin

The morning started with Wu SuYi getting ready to the scheduled interrogation she had to attend. Mei LiLi looked from the side of the room which was divided by a large one-side glass while watching Wu SuYi's interrogation with a worried look.

At that moment, a man came beside her with his hand both holding cups of coffee. After leaning his body on the nearby cupboard, he pushed his other hand and offered Mei LiLi the other cup.

Mei LiLi took the coffee and looked at it blankly, "I am sorry detective Mo, I don't like coffee."

Detective Mo smiled at her. The man was on his early forty with a round eyeglasses that covered a large scar on the left side of his face. Being the head of detective in Chongqing's headquarter police station, the man new both Mei LiLi and Wu SuYi well.

"I know. This was for SuYi but after seeing that dark eye bags under her eyes, I think she has enough coffee already. It's tea," He then added. "What happened to her? Another assault case? She would always be in a bad mood when taking care sexual assault cases. I think its because she can relate to most of the victims with her tender heart. But it look worse this time."

Mei LiLi shook her head, "I don't think that is the case now. Senior had been a workaholic but she took more than she could handle for the past few days… as if she is trying to forget something by making herself busy…"

The door to their room was opened and Mei LiLi became startled when she saw Wu SuYi had stepped in, "I am not trying to make myself busy," she immediately replied once she entered.

While she was grateful of the two people's worries over her, she couldn't help but feel embarrassed to hear them talk about her. Does it shows on her face? That she was plagued by one of the most annoying people in her life?

The last thing she wanted was for people to be concerned on her. She didn't want to bother them with her burdens…

"LiLi," Detective Mo called, "Can I ask you to bring me another cup of coffee? The one I have now isn't enough."

Mei LiLi was confused at first, unable to notice the little cue Detective Mo subtly told her to make space for them until she looked at his raised brows.

"O- of course!" Mei LiLi then hurried outside, forgetting the cup she had to bring to refill the coffee.

Wu SuYi sighed as she crossed her arms, "The witness claim that she didn't see the attack. She was with her friend, who is the victim, but still insisted that she doesn't see her friend had been stabbed by the assailant."

"Have you seen the accused?" Detective Mo questioned.

"I did, a high school boy," sighed Wu SuYi. It said that children are angels but to her, she sees children as a plain white canvas. The colors that are placed on the canvas could either create a beautiful piece or instead, became a muddy, unbearable painting that no one would ever wish to look at.

"Correct. The witness is a high school girl similar to the victim. All of them are in the same high school to add. The three of them claim otherwise, however, the entire school students and staff stated they were friend and was spotted together for many times," detective Mo closed his words with a smile, "There is someone saying the truth here but also those who are lying."

"I will drop a visit to both the assailant and the victim to get to the bottom of it," Wu SuYi murmured that got Detective's Mo's attention.

"You haven't met him? But you are his lawyer?" He questioned.

"While I am the lawyer for the assailant, I haven't been able to meet him. I heard he is the son of an influential family and they are trying to suppress the rumor from getting out of their hands," Wu SuYi shook her head and her eyes narrowed. Her words then come from the depth of her heart. "Influential family keep their reputation up front more than anything."

Detective noticed that her statement reflected herself. He crossed his hands together, "Is your terrible mood root from your family's problem again? Are they still forcing you to do what they demand you to do?"

Wu SuYi looked at the man, the only person who knew of her family problem and her messy past. Long in the past, there was a time where Wu SuYi had ran away from home, hiding in the street until Detective Wu's wife who had bring her to their home, treated her kindly and offer her a warm place to stay. To this day, Wu SuYi was grateful to them. It was because of their help that she could become the independent person she was now.

"They wanted me to come back home," Wu SuYi gritted a teeth with a spiteful smile, "Come back to the place they called as their home after eight years."

Detective Mo was speechless by the audacity her family had shown, "They dared to?!" The man's eyes flared in anger. As to his eyes, Wu SuYi was like his youngest daughter and he couldn't believe how her family who had discarded her and treated her as if she never existed now finally want her to come back.

"I don't understand either. They wanted me gone. After I fail to become the doll they wanted me to be, they were so joyful that I disappeared but yesterday, I got a call from them," Wu SuYi's run her fingers through her hair in frustration. "When I ran away from the house for the first time, they called me— well in fact, they only demanded I came back home. But soon after, they were happy that I was gone, they didn't even begin to call me. Remember how they acted as though they didn't know me when you called them?"

Detective Mo fell silent, "I will look into their news. Knowing how the Wu Family is. Once a scandal got to their name, it would be difficult to find out what actually happened, but I know a way to dig through that."

Wu SuYi shook her head and smiled warmly, "I will be fine, detective. I don't want you to have anything to do with them. My family, the Wu's, they are the family no one want to go against. If they deem you as their enemy, the outcome would be extremely terrible for you. I don't want that to happen to you or your family. How is Dei Dei? I heard he is pursuing his study in California?"

Wu SuYi purposely veered the conversation. Detective Mo wanted to discuss more and offer his help but decided to do them discreetly as he respected Wu SuYi and her wishes, "He is in California. Even though he is older than you, he is still a child that makes me and my wife worried every day."

"I am sure he would be alright. Dei Dei always told me that his proudest achievement is to show you two his doctorate diploma," Wu SuYi saw the wide fatherly smile from Detective Mo, making her heart warm by the love and affection their family had.

Like any other, she wanted a peaceful life but as a human, there was nothing she could do when it come to choosing a family she would be born to. In the past she would wonder how happier her life would be if only she was born somewhere else other than Wu Family. She once cursed her family, cursed God who had given her the family that had ruined her, but then she learned to accept them as part of her life.

She stopped cursing god, and instead thanking them for she was able to meet the kind people like Detective Wu and his wife.

"Well then, I will now go on my way," Wu SuYi said, preparing herself to leave.

"You are going now? It would be more fun if only we could spend more time. How about this: during your weekend, why don't you visit the house? QiQi wanted to meet you so much," Detective Mo offered which Wu SuYi gladly accepted without a second thought.

"But I don't think I would be able to do it this weekend. How about the week after? I will make sure to have three days off my week," Wu SuYi planned in her mind. Excitement filled her as she would meet Ms. QiQi and spend her time free from all her worries.

"You are welcomed anytime," Detective Mo stated warmly, his words moved her heart. "One more thing, SuYi. I have a little bad feeling about this case, be extremely careful, alright?"

Wu SuYi nodded her head gladly then making her way out. Detective Mo who was now alone, pulled his phone to his ears, "Hey! Yes, yes, I heard about it already. It's been a long time and I'm sorry to ask this suddenly to you. But can you help me to find if there's any news surrounding the Wu Family? Don't say that… I promise I will treat you to an expensive dinner, just help me this once, okay?"

Wu SuYi who stepped out from the police station, felt more refreshed then before. After meeting Detective Mo and spoke to him, she felt a burden was shaved off from her shoulders.

She was glad that there was still people who she could talk with which was different from her past where she had nothing but a tattered doll.

She was making her way toward the door when she noticed Mei LiLi speaking with a tall man who had just stepped into the police station. Wu SuYi's heart thump on the tall person's silhouette and quickly, she noticed the little creature who was carried on the man's arm.

Rui's eyes were much faster compared to eagle when it come to discovering Wu SuYi and when he did, he struggled from his dad's arms.

Han XiGuang raised his eyebrow at his son who had began to misbehaved and followed his fixed gaze to grin when he saw Wu SuYi as well. Wu SuYi's smile fell when she saw the man's grin.

This man! How does he know she is here!!
