Chapter 4 - Gates of the Carnival

The journey took several hours. But they were crucial. I gave Scarlett the last bottle of water I had, because she forgot to bring her own. She also got a little hungry, so I gave her my granola bar. But I didn't mind. I wasn't hungry nor thirsty. I was just eager to get to the carnival. "Are we almost there?" I asked. "We're about halfway there. Only about three more hours of walking." She replied. "Do you think mom wonders where we are?" I asked as I stop walking. Scarlett hesitates. "No. I do not think she misses us or even realizes that we are gone." She said with a straight face. And we keep walking. I looked down at the watch I always wore across my wrist. "It's almost 8:45." I tell Scarlett. "The gates close at midnight. We better hurry." She replies. We walk past a beautiful tree with flowers in full bloom. I stop to look at it. And before Scarlett grabs my arm to keep me walking along, I pick one of the flowers. It was practically glowing. It's golden color complimented the pink tint the petals had. Scarlett saw me studying the flower and stops to put it in my hair. "There." She said, satisfied. "Thank you!" I say. By 11:00 we reach the gates of the carnival. "The long walk was so worth it!" I whisper. The gates were painted golden and there were red, blue, and silver lights up around the gates. It was just how I had imagined them. This was truly a dream come true.
