James stared into the night tired.
BOOM!!!
The cannons had not stopped shooting. They started last night and never stopped. The sound of the cannons drowned out the execution drums. A new list to be collected was posted after the execution. It was four hundred people long and included militia leaders.
BOOM!!!
"The walls are enchanted!" screamed a man down the wall. "You can't blast through it!"
BOOM!!! BOOM!!! BOOM!!! BOOM!!!
"Something is coming!" Shouted Captain Narrows. "Everyone on the wall now!"
The yellow coats of the royal guard filled the wall. Halberds and war hammers had replaced muskets after last night. A gate was almost overrun last night. It was widely reported the dead folks didn't care if they took a musket ball. The old armories were opened, and antique weapons had been pulled out. It seems as though this was something they wanted from day one of the siege, but officers did not act on.
ROOOARRRR!!!
James looked to the sky where the loud screech had come from. A pair of yellow wasps the size of cows flew at the wall. James readied his musket and shot at the wasp glad that the watchmen had been allowed to keep muskets.
POP!! POP!! POP!!
A handful of muskets fired at the approaching bugs. The left wasp flinched and flew to the side. The wasp on the right continued to fly straight at the wall.
As it got close enough to see the red of its compound eye the bug let out a hiss and spat a jet of liquid on the men to his right.
The men screamed as their skin began to melt of their bones. The second wasp came in range lining up on James's section of wall. He and the other men ran to avoid its spit. It stopped and hovered choosing a target on the wall and spit on the men who had run the other way. The creature hissed again and flew back into the night.
NGHAAA!!!
AHHHH!!!
The men the creatures spit on screamed in pain as they melted onto the castle walls. Captain Narrows ordered a barrel dumped on the men and the wall. The powder touched the liquid and it sizzled and bubbled again before calming.
"It's safe," declared the Captain. "Get them off the wall and get ready I don't think this is over."
The shuffle of feet made itself heard with the thump thump thump approached the wall. James felt his heart sink as he saw another wave of dead folk walked up to the wall with a walking house rite behind.
"Cannons," ordered Narrows. "knock down that house!"
BOOM!
A wall cannon began to hammer the approaching brick house. Bricks shattered into splinters as rooms and dead musketeers shot at the men on the wall. The house smacked into he wall and the front door opened. Nobody dares to stand in front of the door after last night's cannon blast.
A cannon did not emerge but a multi armed horror carrying makeshift blades and clubs jumped onto the wall. More followed out behind the first and they began slashing wildly at the royal guardsmen.
"Where are the militia!" cried a man.
"Not coming," shouted Narrows! "Use that halberd guardsman!"
The men in yellow used their halberds reach to jab and hack at the abominations but soon found that some of them had limbs made of two or more arms stitched together giving it more reach than would be expected.
James Saw Philip the grenadier duck into range of one of these creatures with his har hammer and delivered a solid blow to its chest. The impact landed with a crack and the creatures chest slumped over. Its arms still flailed wildly not working with its back seemingly broken.
The siege house popped back up and a number of dead people jumped out the front door.
BOOM!!!
The house took another blow and the second floor collapsed on the escaping dead folk.
The injured monstrosity jumped onto the platform. The other two horrors stabbed any man who was close and jumped on the house's foundation dragging the men screaming along with them. The platform lowered and the men disappeared. Only their screams remained.
Philip began laying into the crowed of dead folks. Captain Narrows rushed in behind him with his saber taking limbs as he moved. Philip armed a grenade and tossed it over the wall onto the platform. The platform rose with another mob of dead folk. The grenade exploded and the wall cannon blew up the rest of the foundation. The dead did not escape onto the wall and fell back to the ground.
"Clear up the rest of these and start bringing up the rocks!" ordered Captain Narrows.
The rest of the dead folk were smashed with the halberds and hammers. James spent the rest of the nights moving rocks and debris to the top of the wall so he could drop them onto the hoard of dead men slamming their fists against the stone wall.
As the sun rose, he looked over the wall and saw the growing number of corpses and two broken houses at the base of the wall. Some parts of the mass grave continued to twitch and squirm. James wondered how long it would take for the bodies to stack up to the top or the wall.
SCREEEEE!!
James looked to inside the city where a giant lizard flew over the city and spat black flames into the city.
BOOM!! BOOM!! BOOM!!
The cannons resumed firing as James returned to the guard barracks to try and sleep.
