Chapter 2 - The man with the pretty eyes

A terrifying scream in the background of the black night made Milani woke up with a jolt as she thought she heard the piercing scream of a child. She was sweating as she quickly sat up. Her memories and feelings from where she was were a little more muddled, resulting in some misinterpretation and confusion.

Her gaze went from pitch black to the unfamiliar room as raw pain began to replace her numbness. She held her head from what she could tell was a migraine, as she shielded her eyes aside from the light from that filtered past the pale white blinds. 'Where am I' she thought as she examined the white room.

There was a moment of realization as she recognized the thick mattress underneath her was not familiar, and then a snap as the memories let loose, and she tumbled backwards to the headboard arms outstretched, a tear muffled in her arm. Milani dropped back on the blanket yanking it over her body. Her throat was very sore, and she soon realizes after her vision fully came back that she was in a hospital bed.

She was sure the doctor would show up any given minute. Although her body was still sore, she marched to the bathroom and yanked off her gown, stepping into the shower. Turning her face to the shower, she cried. How could her husband push her down the stairs and not even bother coming to visit her?

Milani's first shower in practically days made her want to stay in the hot water forever, until she heard a knock on the room door. She turned off the shower, some pretense of her husband comforting her cane to mind. A minute later she picked up her hospital gown, her side covered with bruises and a scar running down her stomach, she waddled out the bathroom to the door. The person knocked at the door and Milani took one deep breath as she opened it. "Hello, Milani, isn't it? I'm Dr. Oliver Brown," A tall man stepped into the room and those piercing blue eyes stared at her calmly. Dr. Brown glanced up at her as she put a hand to her throat, feeling the soreness.

"Ah, I see, it's normal for one to have a sore throat when they've been unconscious in the hospital for more than ten days. There is a glass of water on the table right there." Milani examined the man in front of her, who was holding a clipboard.

He wasn't a large man, but is indeed well toned and had a beautiful face. She walked over to the table, taking a large gulp of water. Finally, after a while of her drinking, she looked up at him. "Oh, thank you Dr. Brown," she smiled very politely.

He looked up from the clipboard and his expressionless face suddenly changed to one of delightedness. "You're looking a lot better than when you first came here, plus your medical papers say you'll be good to go in a few days." Standing still Milani thanked her doctor and watched him as he turned and walked out the room.

Milani spent hours on the bed, searching her phone for text messages from her family, but instead finding nothing. The stored tears, she tried her best to contain, flowed down and sobs plagued her body, robbing it of the ability to respond, barely allowing a breath to be drawn. She rocked back and fourth, tears coursing down her cheeks. She knew her eyes were probably bloodshot already, and tears were beginning to blur her vision.

Why did I listen to him? I should have seen it through his eyes? Why? God, please help me understand why? Milani thought as she leaned her head back and looked up at him, wiping the tears from her cheeks. It was a picture of her and her father on her fifteenth birthday. If only she hadn't listened to her husband and didn't ignore the one man who's been there for her all her life.

She was exhausted but sleep seemed unlikely, given the fact that every time she shut her eyes she found herself in her home falling down a flight of stairs. "Sweetie, you can lie down in the bed it's not healthy for you to be crying on the floor," Startled, she jumped to her feet, dropping her phone. Milani looked behind her seeing A somewhat tall figured woman lounged against the wall beside her bed. She giggled wildly and watched as Milani lowered her hand to her chest. "Did I scare you? I'm sorry about that. My name is Jasmine but you can call me Jas, I'm your nurse for today." Pausing for a moment, Jasmine moved closer to Milani observing several sniffles coming from the girl besides her.

Jasmine sat next to the weeping girl wrapping her arm around her. "It will be okay, whip those tears," Jasmine tightened her grip around her patient. "Oh", Milani said, rubbing dry tears and also the sleep from her eyes, "I'm sorry I got some of my tears on your uniform." She pulled her close and grinned. "It's okay honey, you look like you could use a friend and a hug."

Despite the situation she was in, sleep soon claimed her.

"Ms. Kekoa, it's time to wake up." Milani groaned before whipping the sleep out of her eyes. She sat up on the hospital bed and tried her best in opening her eyes. In front of her was the doctor with pretty eyes from before. "Oh hi Doctor, what time is it?" Yawned Milani. "It's now eight o'clock in the evening Ms. Kekoa," he answered back. "Oh okay thank you Doctor," the doctor handed her a cup of water and a pill.

"This is to help ease the pain in your head. You had a concussion the first day you showed up so it'd be wise to treat that before we discharge you." Milani nodded and swallowed the pill.

"By the way, Doctor did I get any visitors today while I slept?" Emptiness overwhelmed Milani as she waited for the doctor to answer her question. "I'm afraid not Ms. Kekoa, were you expecting anyone?" Sighing Milani shook her head no. "Very well, I'll come back and check up on you tomorrow evening. Goodnight and try to sleep peacefully tonight."

The doctor with pretty eyes said before leaving the room. "So no one came to see me tonight?" Milani's voice filled with sorrow as tears began to drop down her face.
