Chapter 30 - She couldn't look at them

Thus, as promised, Jayden went to the hospital almost everyday to help caring for Lily. This went on for weeks. Joyce went there to visit Lily almost everyday. However, final exam and government examination was coming soon and she had to focus on her school work. During these last few days, she had been contacting Jayden lesser and lesser. Both were busy with school and Jayden still had to go to hospital though not as often as before.

It was just like the usual day. Joyce finally finished her final term exam. She was going back to her own country in a couple of week. She was graduating. it had been a week since the last time she saw Lily due to the final-exam. She would be having her government exam next week and then a long holiday of 3 months before the result came out. She was reluctant to go back but her parents insisted that she went back for a couple of week at the least. So, she finally agreed.

Since this is the only week that she could go to the hospital, she was prepared to spend as much time as possible with Lily. She excitedly prepared some games and some books to kill time at the hospital with Lily.

She put on her earphone and enjoyed the peaceful bus-ride to the hospital. She half-skip half-walked to the room. She had a bright smile on her face and opened the door to Lily's room.

And she just stood there. Staring at the two figures inside and after a few seconds, silently closed the door.

If the heart could bleed and still be alive then her heart must be squeezed dry at the moment. She sat outside the room in a daze on the chair provided. Wondering when she should enter the room. She sighed to herself a few times. The image of Jayden embracing Lily kept on playing in her mind. She was unsure and momentarily confused as what to do. While she was contemplating she heard Mrs.Chua called her.

"Joyce! Why are you sitting out here?" Mrs.Chua asked her. "Just enter the room. Lily must be missing you. Go!" She gestured to Joyce to enter the room with her.

"Hi, Mrs.Chua. I was just tired and rest for a while.I didn't want to disturb Lily in case she was sleeping." she lied smoothly.

"I think Jayden is here. So she won't be sleeping anytime soon."

"How is she?"

"She gets better. She is more energetic now. Maybe the chemothraphy has given positive result."

"I am glad that she is getting better." Joyce felt much lighter since Lily was doing well.

-----

"Hey! Look who is here!" Mrs.Chua excitedly told Lily. She knew that Lily was bored since Joyce didn't visit her for a week.

"Hey!" Joyce poked het head inside the room and grinned.

"Hey babe!" Lily was smiling ear to ear. Happiness shown on her face. It was so obvious that something good just happened to her.

"How are you feeling? It's quite boring without my silly joke right?" Joyce asked mischievously. Acting as if she just realized Jayden was there, she looked up to see Jayden staring tenderly at her. They had not met much since both were quite busy.

"Hi Jayden." she awkwardly greeted him.

"Hi".

She didn't know what to say to him again so she awkwardly ignored him and chat with Lily. However Jayden was able to sense that she was faking her cheerfulness. Lily could sense it too.

It was time for Lily to have her dinner. Mrs.Chua came with her porridge.

"Here is your food... Eat it while it's still warm." Mrs.Chua fussed about Lily. Arranging her pillows, she put the small table on her bed for her to eat. She busied herself with the water for her.

"Mom... I don't feel like eating anything... I feel nauseated whenever I eat." Lily whined and begged her mom...

"But you must eat. Doctor has ordered you to eat some food. You need all the liquid and stength to build your immune system. Especially after your chemo."

"Moooommmmm...." Lily started to whine again.

"Lily, stop it. You should eat. The doctor had told you himself." Jayden reprimanded her softly. "Come on..." He then took the bowl of porridge and started to feed her like she was a little child...

Pouting, Lily grudgingly ate the porridge.

Joyce was sitting at the sofa, when she saw Jayden feeding Lily, she couldn't help but feel jealous. She turned her face away from them and tried to focus on the television show in front of her. She couldn't stand looking at them.

Her mind started to wonder. Has Jayden started to have feeling for Lily now? What am I thinking? I have to trust him. He told me already that he is only helping her. But why does this hurt so much? I better go before I started to show my real feelings here.

After Lily finished her food, Joyce told her that it's better that she went home since it was quite late already.

Lily pouted and extorted a promise from Joyce that she would come the day after and she had to come early. Joyce promised that she would and left.

"Wait!" Jayden stopped her. "Are you okay now? Rest early okay?" He said to Lily. " I had better go too." He then took his bag and went out with Joyce.

Aftet they both had left, Lily saw that Joyce had left one of her book on the table. Since she had just left she must be around. So, Lily quickly went out to call for Joyce. She went out holding the book and headed for the elevator. She saw Joyce and before she could call her, she stopped. Then her eyes became rounded in surprise. She looked at the two figures entering the elevator and turned around. She went back to her room and stared at the wall.
