Chapter 2 - Prologue Part Two

Mr. Spero woke up in bed to the sounds of a bustling hospital. A rhythmic beeping of ECGs with a cacophony of voices as the backdrop. The smell of anesthetic permeating the small room he was in was, almost, but not quite sickening.

Getting up with a start he smells something fishy, that being his ability to smell with what's supposed to be a horribly shattered nose. Looking over the room his eye's land on a nearby floor length mirror.

Sighing in relief he gets up to check his nose, only to realize that it appears to not have broken in the first place.

"Thank the lord for future medicine." He says, not looking away from his newly rebuilt nose with a sense of unease.

Cut short by the opening of the room's door he turned around, coming face to face with one of the most beautiful women he has ever seen. With eyes so sapphire blue it felt surreal and a smile so genuine that he faltered, staring.

Clearly uncomfortable, the woman shifted uncomfortably before directly asking him. "Excuse me, sir, can you not?"

Realizing what he's done he apologizes and laughs at himself, getting back on positive terms with the gorgeous nurse.

As silence creeps into the room it creates a silence so awkward that the nurse just has to say something. "Ah well… you're wanted at the main desk. They need you to sign some papers and talk to you about the kid."

"The kid…? Oh yeah, the kid. Is it okay?" He said with a quieter tone of voice.

"Yes, thanks to your effort of course. We only had to give stem cell treatment to the right hand to get it back from the frostbite. If it had been any later the child wouldn't've made it."

Spero, now smiling, sighs. He shimmies over to the door before turning around, winking, and exiting into the hallway. Chuckling over the younger nurse's blushing he arrives at the waiting room and walks, slowly, up to the hospital check-out/in. After waiting a solid fifteen minutes for the unenthusiastic clerk to hang up began the process of signing out. He made it halfway through before the clerk realizes who he is.

"Ah! Um… M-Mr. Spero sir there's a doctor waiting for you in room 107. You need to go talk about the infant."

Seeing the horribly timid and stuttering teenager he smiled before agreeing politely and made his way down the hospital's maze of corridors. Arriving at room 107 he tersely knocked on the door. A middle-aged man opened up the nursery, letting Spero into the spacious room.

"So, sir we're going to have to ask you a few questions about the child before we can continue." Said the grey-haired doctor looking through his notes before looking up at Spero.

"Of course, what do you need?"

"Do you have any past relation with this infant.?"

"No."

"Was it left with any form of identification?"

"None that I could see, although I was in a bit of a haze."

"Are you looking to adopt?"

"Excuse me?" Spero asked, clearly confused by the question.

"We don't have any space in any of the nearby homes and our nursery is full. We need foster homes as all of our other options are full."

"Hmm… Do we know the child's name?"

"No sir, we do not"

"How does Kirby sound to you?"

"Excuse me? What do you mean by th-"

"A name for the kid of course, if I'm to adopt him then I figure I should I get the naming out of the way."

Realizing what Spero means the older doctor looks him up and down before smiling.

-----

Five years later.

There are high spirits around Spero's Orphanage. It was Kirby's eighth birthday after all. There were fifteen people including the ex-nurse, now caregiver that now goes by Ms. Spero. Things had gotten off well for her and Mr. Spero as after their first meeting in the hospital he went back for monthly checkups with Kirby.

The orphanage had been started mere months after he'd taken in Kirby. With such a demand for the business and a government stipend, he started the business easily. Hiring tutors and doing private lessons he taught them using the most expensive and futuristic technology available to him. These children knew about quantum tunneling, experimental physics and could absolutely trample the previous generation when it came to anything nonphysical. This much was standard for the rich and wealthy of the time. But they were not desperate to improve their standard of living. Mr. Spero also spent absurd amounts of time and effort into their education so that they knew the basics of everything available. Their brains physically evolved to process larger numbers and retain more knowledge than most non-quantum computers.

These were smart children. Not social or very eloquent, but very, very intelligent.

As the kids would technically be able to move into society by themselves if not for their lacking EQ, Spero tried his best in delivering moral values and valid reasonings to these children. Fearing their impending mental issues he constantly brought them to charity events, social gatherings, even some political rallies. It was all in the vain as the most impactful thing was the role model of Mr. Spero himself. With such an outstanding moral figure he helped the children evolve, adapt, and overcome their problems. When he finally married the beautiful nurse the kids held a party in their honour, thanking them for all they'd done.

They were normal kids, just a tad too smart for their own good. Aside from Kirby of course. He was the special case. The abandonment from when he was a child left some trauma. He couldn't connect to well with others but with the help of Mr. and Ms. Spero he grew up wonderfully. All the children were particularly blunt and not very emotional, Kirby seemed detached, but as he knew Spero supported him unequivocally, he took what they said as how to be as happy as them.
