Chapter 75 - Library search (Part 1)

Another armament class came and went along with the basics class, nothing noteworthy happened at either of them. I sigh... I thought I was supposed to be close to taking out my armament but I still didn't take it out today. However, this time around I wasn't the only one left around.

Vanessa, Allen, Oscar and his gay partner and one of the girls that approached me the first day stayed this time. I get up and stretch, Ugh!... This is annoying, I can feel myself being close to the armament I desire but I'm not able to bring it out.

So now I got free time I guess. Should I go to the library again?... Maybe I could ask Tess about what I was wondering about yesterday if she's there. I won't press it too far though, I'm just slightly curious. I also have to be prepared just in case she asks for something in return.

If it's something reasonable that I can provide then I'll accept it. If I ask her and she agrees on something this small there's a chance that I can slowly escalate the questions I ask her, I might even end up with a lead to annulling this contract and getting out of here. Of course, there's also a good chance that she may throw a lie or two or throw in a report to the government itself so I have to be careful of what I ask.

I walk into the library and both Tess and the girl from yesterday are sitting at the counter. Alright, at least that hag is here now, I'll try asking about it. I walk to the counter.

"Yo, sup Tess."

"Hi, there kid, what type of book do you need this time around."

"I'm not searching for a book, I was searching for you."

"...Are you sure you're Luis?"

"In the flesh, or are you going senile already?"

"SHE'S NOT *cough*..." The girl from yesterday started screaming something and choked midway.

"Calm down Jennifer, he's just joking around."

She starts looking down in embarrassment.

"Your library assistant is an interesting person."

"She's a good kid, so it's okay. So you were searching for me, what for?"

"Yes, I thought that you may have been working for the government for a long time, so you may have an answer to something I was wondering."

"That's a reasonable assumption. But, did you think that I would tell you for free kid?"

There it is, I wonder what she'll ask.

"Not at all, however, I don't necessarily need this information it is just to satisfy my curiosity so if you're too demanding I'll just leave it be."

She stares at me again, honestly, what the hell is she doing when she does that. She doesn't have any mana so it's not like she is doing anything special.

"I see, you've learned how to keep a very monotone face from those months patrolling around. Either that or that's what you actually want and have no other purpose in asking me anything, though I doubt it."

...How does she know?... No, I have to keep a composed face. She has probably worked for the military for a long time, there's a chance she either has access to information through either security clearances or connections within the military, her knowing might be a result of researching me.

"And it looks like you wasted no time researching me huh."

"No change in expression, can't you try being more expressive from time to time?"

"Well, I'd prefer to not wrinkle my face," I say as I stare at her.

"Very funny, aren't you," She gets up and starts walking away and I follow behind her, "Follow me, depending on your inquiry I'll decide to answer, however, remember that I may not answer you at all."

"Sounds reasonable enough to me."

We reach the farthest end of the library.

"In that case." She grabs a specific book and pulls on it, the bookshelf starts moving to the side.

This feels straight out of a movie, it's kind of cool, I'm not gonna lie.

"What do you think? Pretty neat right."

It's awesome. However, I can't let my guard down.

"It looks like the perfect place to trap someone inside."

"Maybe, but inside here is my own space. Nobody can hear us from the outside and there are no cameras or wiretaps."

Inside there's a small table with four chairs around it. The walls are pure white and have various paintings on it. There's a couch along with a plasma T.V. and lastly a refrigerator.

"I'll be the judge of that."

I walk near the entrance and focus my sensing radius onto the whole room.

"Why are you standing there kid?"

"Just a small procedure in order to confirm if what you said is true."

I kept on searching but I couldn't find anything, I guess this is good enough for now. If I missed anything it will be my fault alone and just in case I will keep what I say to a minimum.

"You done yet kid? I can't exactly have this open all afternoon till you're satisfied it's safe."

"I'm good," I say as I walk inside.

"Alright then, take a seat I'll get us something to drink." She taps a button on the side of the wall and the door closes.

I seat down on a chair near the table. Come to think of it, why did she invite me in here to begin with? I don't think many people know about this place and if she wanted to discuss something we could've done it in a quiet part of the library where no one goes...

I don't like this, I better get this over with quick...Calm down me, I'm doing this for a mutually beneficial relationship.

She gets to the table I'm sitting at and gives me a cup.

"Here, some apple juice." She pours it into my cup

"Alright." I take a sip and watch it for a bit inside my body... no poison destroying action detected, okay.

"You drank it pretty fast for a distrusting person."

... I guess I did, I've probably overconfident of the fact that I can't be poisoned easily. I should try to keep myself in check for that

"Can we cut to the chase already, you're doing this in a very roundabout way."

"I guess I am, what do you need to know kid?"

"I just wanted to know whether you knew of any specific cases where a couple between a magic soldier and a regular human was born." I drink a little of the juice.

"...That's it?"

Of course, that's it, I'm slowly trying to build up my questions as time goes on. However, for now, this is what I'll ask in order to later know what I actually want to know. A cycle of answer and demand will be born and eventually become customary. Or at least that's what I'm hoping for.

"Is there a problem with that? Even someone like me gets curious about mundane things you know."

"...What exactly are you planning?"

"Nothing really, just pure curiosity. I want to know what you'll demand in return before you answer though."

"... I see... In that case. If you want an answer from me then help Jeniffer out."

"Huh?"
