My apartment was silent other than the pitter-patter of my feet walking around. Being only ninety pounds, I dont make much sound when I walk around, especially since I take my shoes off at the door. There is one spot infront of my fridge where my hardwood floors squeak, it's the only place in the entire house.
I walked over to the mirror in my bathroom and started to apply natural tones of makeup, nothing serious.
"Has Blaire talked to you lately?" My boyfriend, Tobias, asked from the other room. I lived in the apartment with his family after my adoptive "family" abandoned me. We shared a bathroom which sat between our two rooms.
"Nope, she's probably on a job," I answered as I slowly applied my mascara. I do basic makeup just so I have something on. I fluffed my short dark curly hair and then sprayed it with some hairspray. Luckily for me, it decided to actually be semi tame today.
"I haven't heard from her in a while," I added as I straightened my yellow sweater and walked into my bedroom. I heard Tobias walk into the bathroom, which my bathroom side door was wide open. He started combing his hair in the mirror.
"Do you think she's hurt?" Tobias asked.
"There is no way that anyone could hurt Blaire," I answered with a chuckle, "Have you seen some of the things she can do?"
"I have," Tobias answered, "Especially when she goes beast mode."
"You say that now, when you first met her you thought she was going to murder you," I laughed.
Blaire. She was another superhero like me. Blaire came from an island in the south Pacific Ocean with forty some other superheroes just like us. Blaire's real name is Carla, one of the top leaders of Lionsville. She is one of the six most powerful people after the war.
Sixteen years ago, a nuclear war broke out, the government, in fear of the superhumans getting out of containment, sent them to the island of Hatutu. Blaire and I speculate that a few of her friends as well as I, were on the last flight that crashed. I was only a few weeks old when the plane crashed.
My adoptive parents rushed to the plane crash to see if there were survivors. I was the only person left in the plane.
We know of only three other survivors of the crash. Eclipse: an eighteen year old guy who can shift into a wolf. Gena: a sixteen year old girl who can create rocks from air. And Bob: he was the first test subject, he had no powers but Bob was really tall and strong.
He died saving everyone else on another timeline in the universe, or at least that's what Blaire said.
Tobias doesn't know Blaire's true identity. Carla is #1 on the most wanted list at the old agency that she worked at as Blaire. There's over two million dollars placed on anyone who brings back her head. I, as well as Blaire, thought it would be best to not tell him who she really is. Not only to protect her but to protect us too. If word were to get out that Blaire is Carla then we could get attacked because we associate with her.
Blaire honestly scares me. Not only because of all her powers but because she is so strong. Not just physically, she's mentally strong too. Nothing scares her. She will jump infront of bullets to save people. She has saved me from so many instances where I very easily could've died.
Her friends are pretty cool too.
Carter is no doubt her best friend, some days I even think they have a thing for eachother. Blaire refuses to talk about it though. I think she might be crushing on him and just not want to talk about it.
Now thinking about it, Blaire refuses to talk about a lot of stuff.
"We need to go to Lionsville later this week," I told him.
"Why?" He asked as he walked out of the bathroom towards my room and leaned in the doorway.
"To visit Eclipse," I lied without looking at Tobias. I was tying my black tennis shoes and trying to convince him to come. He doesn't like Carla, he think's she's a scary kind of quiet. The kind of quiet that scares you when it comes from a person who will intensely stare at you for no reason.
Well I know she's having flashbacks, but Tobias thinks she's reading his mind. He doesnt pay attention to her clouded eyes when she stares.
But by saying I wanted to visit Eclipse, it sounds like a genuine want to visit my friend. Tobias was pretty close with Eclipse and Dylan. Dylan used to work with Blaire as assassins and now they're just friends who chill around Lionsville.
"Eclipse has a meeting tomorrow and then a festival to mark two years since Carla, Carter, Liam, Madelyn, and the others arrived. Do you want to go down tomorrow or the day after? We can stay for the carnival type celebration," Tobias explained.
"Okie dokie," I answered with another question, "Have you talked to Eclipse lately?"
"Yeah, just yesterday actually," He answered with a smile.
"What did he say?"
"We were just catching up on what's been happening lately, apparently Lionsville has been without Carla for the past week, she just came back yesterday. Brought back someone called Rachel or something. Must be confusing with the baby and a new person both being called Rachel."
I shook my head with a smile, "I bet it is."
Blaire must've been messing with time travel again. No doubt saving people for the fiftieth time this year.
"Eclipse mentioned something about a wedding we're invited to," Tobias added, "I'm not sure, he kept getting off subject. I think he was in the middle of doing something."
Probably helping Carla run the town. They've switched the way everything runs in the past year or so.
"I'm surprised you want to go since Carla is back," I said as I looked over to see him brushing his hair again.
He stopped and looked right at me, "You know I worry about you two talking right?"
"Yeah, yeah," I huffed, "You tell me all the freaking time how much you don't trust her."
"What's your problem?"
"What's yours? She's just a person, just a person like me. Why are you so scared of her?"
Tobias's mom interrupted our arguement by knocking on my door and then walking in, "School's been canceled, something about a teacher walkout or something like that."
Great.
"Someone is at the door for you darling, I've never seen her before but she's definitely a superhuman like you." She said and then turned to walk away, "I can almost sense when people are different now." She chuckled as she walked down the hallway out of sight.
"I'll go get that," I said as I started to jog out of my bedroom.
I walked into the livingroom to see Blaire sitting on the sectional couch petting Tobias's dog.
"Blaire!" I exclaimed as I rushed to hug her. We stepped away from the hug only long enough for Tobias to walk into the room.
"Hey Blaire bear, how's life been on the other side of nowhere?" Tobias asked. I rolled my eyes at Tobias's stupidity.
"Don't talk to me like that," Blaire laughed, "I wouldn't want to body slam you again."
Blaire body slammed Tobias when they first met. Tobias was trying to protect me and Blaire went beast mode.
"I still have the scar," Tobias said as he lifted his t-shirt sleeve to show a deep scar across it.
"Well you shouldn't have tried to stab me," Blaire laughed.
We all just laughed.
"So where have you been the past few weeks?" I asked Blaire as we all sat down on the sectional couch.
She paused. Not saying a word for a few seconds as if she was thinking of a lie.
"I went to Kronick Town to talk to another superhuman," She explained.
"You found another superhuman?" Tobias asked in an excited manner.
"A product of Valerie's, first test subject in transferring powers. Her name is Karen. She was tested on without permission and now she struggles in everyday life because she doesn't understand her powers."
I looked down at the floor with a sympathetic look. I felt bad for the girl. Valerie, a corrupt leader who used to run San Diego, found a way to steal powers and give them to other people. She used the discovery to give herself said powers. As for the superhumans, the price was fatal, the system that took their powers killed 100% of participants.
"Where is Karen now?" Tobias asked.
"Packing her things and then heading to Lionsville, I convinced her it was her best bet to a normal life."
"Lionsville?" Tobias sneered, "Lionsville is run by a ton of psychopaths."
"Last time I checked, Eclipse runs security for Lionsville Tobias. Might want to fact check before you call your friends psychopaths," Blaire said in a calm monotone voice.
The room fell silent, Tobias was looking at his feet in an obvious guilt. Blaire had infused too much emotion into her snap and I feel as if she had been anymore animated that Tobias would've figured out her secret.
"Anyway," Blaire started, "I gotta get going, hopefully I see y'all for the celebration."
I nodded and gave her a hug as she stands to leave.
"I'll be there," I assured her.
She nodded and smiled before walking out of the apartment. I looked back at Tobias who looked about as red as a tomato.
"What?" I asked.
"How long have you known?"
