I didn't realise that I was spacing out about the possibilities of people actually living together at fifteen in a small and rather old Town like ours. When I came to, I felt Zerah's eyes staring at me, as if digging through my flesh into the depths of my soul. I was intimated and weirdly attracted to that.
"Who were you again?" he said, puckering up his lips. Damn them lips.
His eyes we're narrowly looking at me as if I had been caught stealing some weed or something.
"Um, Lisa Himmel; a classmate, I guess," I said, my voice squeaking out. I tell you, children, it was one of the most awkward trait of mine- one of the reasons I remained the ugly geek for the most part of middle school.
"No, I know; I've seen you before," he said, finally, finally sitting back. He glanced at Sana and said, "Brew me a cup too,"
She gave a sneaky grin and nodded.
Were they making fun of me? Possibly. But did it matter? Not a bit. BUT, did I care? A teeny tiny bit.
"Mr. Ryan asked me to deliver notes to you and Sana," I said, trying to smile.
"I can see," he said, and then his eyes got wide for a moment, "Don't tell me... you... you walked all the way up the stairs?" he then shook his head, "Gosh, who am I kidding? Did you get dropped off at the terrace from your helicopter?"
"uh, helicopter?" I muttered, confused. Damn, I thought, they think I'm some kind of rich brat.
"Yeah," he said with a smile, "Sana and I had a good ol' duel in the elevator and we broke it somehow. I mean, we didn't mean to break it and all that, but somehow it did end up breaking. I think we pressed some stuff here and there and things got out of hand, you know... and it broke. We were stuck for a good two hours."
"Oh," I said. I didn't know what to say. Two things- first, his smile, damn that smile. If he stepped over me, I'd thank him kind of smile. two, what the fuck? I had to walk ALL the way up forty four flights of stairs because of some stupid so called duel? If they weren't fairly strangers to me, I would have gone all medieval.
"But don't worry, Lisa," he continued cheerfully, "we didn't waste those two hours on nothing. At the end, I climbed up the vent and then my phone had signal. It's funny how there are no signals IN the elevator, but ON the elevator. Also, it's really amusing to see them dents we had created, it cost us some trifle, and it really was worth it, except the smell of grease."
I really didn't have anything to say to that, I couldn't pretend to be amused because they caused me great tiredness.
"Zerah, don't be a bore," Sana said, entering with his cup of coffee. My, the smell... I'd want her to make me coffee every day of my life.
"Ha!" he exclaimed, "You don't find me one when you need me!" he turned to look at me, "Anyway, thanks a lot, Lisa. This would save us a lot of trouble. And don't worry, really... Sana and I are fine."
"I'm not worried," I said finally. At least I didn't sound as bitter as I felt.
"Ah, don't be shy," he said, with one of those smiles that could really melt a person's heart, a million dollar smile.
"I am not," I said, feeling undue embarrassment about MY fugly smile, not that my smile was that fugly. It was, but not as much as back in middle school. Thank god I had braces, those really saved my life in high school.
As they saw me off at the door, Sana said, "We really owe you one,"
"Yes, I will repay you, Lisa," Zerah said with a serious tone.
I nodded, "Sure,"
But I had no fucking clue what I was getting myself into.
