Chapter 1 - The Beginning

"Be prepare for the quiz tomorrow and remember this final exam will be the stone for you to throw it out and see how far can you go after the graduation."

The student clapped at the end of the speech. Satisfied by the reaction, the teacher organized his book, ready to go out. But as if remember something, the teacher stopped right after the door and looked at a particular student hidden at the corner of the class with arms around her head. Looking out of the place among the lively crowd.

"Maya, come to my office before lunch." The stern voice of the teacher stunned the rest of the student. Only the said person don't seems to be disturb by the voice calling her name as she raise her head making the shoulder-length hair falls both side her cheeks and swiftly fixed the glasses that about to fall off of her face. The sleepy eyes makes the aura around her seems more gloomy like usual.

Still, Maya politely nodded in respect and bow her head looking at the top of the table.

The teacher however shakes his head in disapprove at the lacks of energy given by a student of his and walk out from the class.

The silence passed for a few seconds after the teacher left and the class no longer paid attention to the girl who had been called out as if she's just a additional furniture in the class and resumed to their current activities.

Feels no longer been bothered by the stabbing eyes, Maya raised her head and stared out of the window, looking at the birds flying freely.

Jared stretched his tired body. Seeing the papers scattered on the table made him doubt his decision to continue with this position or hand it over to the juniors. As the head of the student council at this school, the members including himself get many benefits but their time is also wasted because their tasks to deal with other students.

Kris was aware of his friend's uneasiness. "You should take a break, man. Well, all of us should. After all we are in the final year."

"I'm also think I should do that. I am a student for god sake but I felt that I'm already a working man." Jared reply with a frown on his face before add. "In the early year, this position give us a lot of merits but at the end of the last year, it's cost us our free time and interfere with our studies but nevertheless to hand over all the tasks to the others is not easy and might cause another disturbance if they are not competent enough."

Hearing his friend's unreasonable complaint, Kris shook his head in disapproval. "You are too old fashioned. Has some faith towards our juniors will you."

In fact, among all the candidates, Kris is also eligible to be the head of the student council but unlike Jared, he does not want to be bound by the rules. As Jared says, he is not a working man. He was a student and even though he was one of the members, Kris was not a person that could be restricted.

Jared turned his ears deaf at his friend's words. If he trusts others, he will not appointed his closest friends as a part of the members despite knowing how fussy they are.

"You not helping at all." Jared murmured while gathered the files scattered on the table. Looking as busy as ever.

Kris raised the eyebrows. "It's almost lunch time. Enough with the works, will you."

"I need to send the report to the office. You go first, I'll catch up later." Jared said and walked out of the room without hearing anymore complain from his friend.

The distance from the student council room and the teacher office is not too far. Jared don't want to waste the time of break hours and earn a mouthful of 'old fashion' words from Kris. In fact, Jared is a an extraordinary student with outstanding looks and background. It's just, Jared sometimes tend to be strict and done everything by the rules.

"Are you gonna be like this even when this is your last year?"

"You will disappoint everyone with your attitude."

"Student Maya, did you ever heard what I'm saying?"

Jared looked at the girl bowing while nodding her head softly. Not even once she raise her head at the scolding as if accepting everything the teacher said to her.

The lack of energy makes Jared no longer paid attention to the pair of teacher-student and hurriedly sent the report.

Before he closed the door office, Jared heard the last words said by the teacher that seems used his last bit of patience.

'If you think living like this is called a life, then your life can't even have a meaning at all.'

At last Jared wondered what did that unfamiliar girl has done since no teacher would be this disappointed without given any effort to their student.

"Haaa.."

Maya climbed up the stairs while sighing. The gloomy aura still linger in her present but when alone she almost become an another person. In the place where society are above all, she don't really had a friend. While others eat together at lunch hour, she will find a quiet and empty place like this on the rooftop and enjoy her little own free time.

Everyday just like another day. Full of fun 'for others', cheerful life with friends 'for others'. Why for others? Because her life is the shitties from the moment she was born. All the words that the teacher poured on her turn out to be the reason of her falling grade because she really meant it when she nodded her head in not find any joy in her life and can't help but felt detached from everything around.

One more year before she graduate from this damn place named 'school' and become a shut in person like she always dreamed of. Ironically, her ambition is a weird one. If others want to be a lawyer or doctor or be a famous person, Maya want nothing but to lead a lazy life in her safe haven. In her bedroom and played with her favorite game.

Still, it's just a fleeting dream. She might have confident saying so if she was born with silver spoon. But as if fate playing with her, not only she's parentless , she also lives with her second aunt's family who don't really welcoming her invading into their little family of four and can't wait to push her out as soon as the graduation day arrive.

The only thing she can be proud of is her nerd like brain that she always squeezed to get the scholarship in this prestigious high school.

While walking with a piece of tuna sandwich in right hand, she stumbled upon small pebbles. Maya took one of the pebbles and threw it as far as she could, However, perhaps because she threw it with her left hand, the pebble just fell not far in front of her.

"Haaa...boring.. "Her lifeless eye behind the glasses watch the blue sky while munching on her sandwich.

The teacher only talked nonsense with brilliant looks on his face. What the use of the good result if she's always alone in this world. From childhood to the age of nineteen, her life was at the mercy of others. Her aunt's family may have hated her but they were not cruel enough to leave her in an orphanage and that's also an act of mercy they had towards her.

That's why while half listening to the teacher's speech, Maya sneer in her heart. She rather be prepared for the end of the world than face the national like exam for tomorrow.

Bang!

Out of the blue, a loud bang was heard. Maya almost choked on her food. She instantly faced towards the door hoping that the teacher didn't find her resting in the restricted area. After a few second waiting for the worse to come, she finds no movement and breath a sigh of relief. No matter how eager she is to leaving this society, Maya intend to get away from this goddamn school as fast as she can but in a good way without leaving a single black record or her obedient like attitude all this time would futile.

But where that sound come from? It's so loud as if a vehicle crash into a wall.

Wait.

Maya stood up quickly and headed towards the border on the roof. It was then Maya saw the most terrifying thing she ever witness in her life.

Although the school building is a little far from the road but the entrance fence is right in front of the road. Maya could see how a city bus drove by and hit a heavy truck and the bus on the other hand was sent flying due to the impact. It rolled several time crashing everything on its path before hit the school fence. Only then the bus stopped.

Many witnesses felt their knees goes weak and feel shock when they saw the gruesome appearance of the dead bodies lying in the middle of road. The remaining vehicle part become mangled with blood dripping alongside the bodies of the unfortunate victims that were crushed by the bus. Some students who was walking during the break hours felt lucky. Even if the school fence is now beyond recognize, at least it stopped the bus from hit the students that was passing by.

Nonetheless, the tragic event happen so fast that Maya can't even blink her eyes and it was then that..

"He..heyy..look!"

No one knew who shouted but everyone's attention now on the wreckage city bus. It was because the supposed dead bodies slowly emerged from the bus while staggering and crawling with their heavy wound, Some of 'them' had broken bones protruding out of their bodies.

Some good people and students immediately ran towards the bus to help the injured people.

"No.'' Maya want to shouted but only the whisper coming out from her throat. Her heart feels uneasy seeing the victims rises and walk slowly towards the perfectly living human that ran towards 'them' and to her expectation, her uneasiness come true. The blood curling screams echoed across the road for everyone to hear and at the school entrance also suffer the same fate when the students trying to help getting bitten by the injured people.

The other people who saw this scene had not even be able to get over their shock when large group of people could be seen running away. Some students who realized the bad situation getting out of their hand now also running towards the school building leaving their friends who got caught in scene. Panic was apparent in everyone's faces as they ran away. Behind them, more blood curling screams could be heard.

Maya still stuck in her place. From above, it might be the safest place to get away from the clamor but for her who saw everything clearly, it also become her new nightmare.

Maya had always been a person who detached from everything and interest in nothing. She don't even know if this a type of disease or illness that she never knew exist in her but seeing the blood getting spilled on the ground and the resigned screams, she felt an adrenaline rush take over her body and for the first time ,her lifeless eyes shone with excitement.
