Chereads / You Don't Simply Kill a Demon / Chapter 35 - Calm Before the Storm

Chapter 35 - Calm Before the Storm

"I don't know, ask your father, he might have one," She instantly turned to Hugo. He got up and opened the table. He pulled out a map and closed the table. He spread it on the table and jammed a knife in one of the corners and places three weights on the other corners. Nami sat on the chair on her knees and placed the book in front of her. She looked at the pages of the book, she put little markers on the map representing each race. But then she stopped with the last one in her hand. She looked at the book, barely moving. Her eyes went side to side from the top to the bottom several times. She stopped. Hugo walked over next to her.

"What's wrong?"

"Where does this one go?"

"Which one is it?"

"This one," She said pointing at the book, "It doesn't have a origin place..."

"Which one is it?" Omega said as he walked in, "Maybe I can help you."

"The demonborn," She said, not noticing that it was Omega.

"Where is your grandfather from?"

"I don't know," She answered looking at the map. Omega placed it in a small unnamed part of Terruna that wasn't part of any empire, "Wait, what does that mean?"

"I am the one of the only living Demonborns in Terruna, their origin place is unknown, so I think you could put it on the oldest one's home," Nami looked at the map then back at Omega, then back to the map.

"Are you hungry, Nami?" Cassidy asked.

"No," Her stomach grumbled, making them laugh, "Maybe."

"Then let's go outside, the food should be here soon," She said as Hugo picked her up and they walked outside. They sat at the table. Hugo put Nami in between him and Cassidy. They sat down and began talking. Nami asked Omega how he got the map.

"Excuse me," A man said standing near them, "The food for Capt'n."

"Thank you," Sona said, grabbing the book, "How much?"

"Capt'n already paid," The man said, "Have a good evening."

"Thank you," Sona said as she took out the things from the box, "I see you ordered some good food," She put the three plates on the table and pulled out the bottle of Riverwood. Cassidy turned and glared at Hugo. He served a small plate of food for Nami, and then they served themselves.

"Mother, did you know granddad is a demonborn? Isn't that cool?"

"He is? Wow, that is pretty cool," She said as she poured herself a glass, "Sona, she was reading your book."

"She was? Aren't you a little genius."

"You taught her, so I guess it would be normal that she is," Hugo butt in, "I like how you used her to compliment yourself."

"Shame," Omega added, "Do I not compliment you enough?"

"Enough about that, isn't there something else we can talk about," Cassidy said, "How do you like the food Nami?"

"Not as good as yours," Nami said with a mouth full of food.

"Don't speak with food in your mouth."

She swallowed the food, "Okay."

"How is the front?" Sona asked.

"Well, where can we start?" Hugo said, "Recently we took another city, it was easier than I would have thought, they had nearly completely abandoned the city, only a few hundred men were left to defend with the general in the town hall, they had prepared a trap to kill us but they probably didn't know Omega was so powerful."

"What happened?"

"Two massive beast smashed through the walls and attacked us, Omega pushed me aside and told me to let him handle it, the only thing I did was shot the general's gun when he aimed at Omega," Hugo laughed, "Omega killed both monsters alone and then we killed the general."

"Anything else during the last tour on the front?"

"Not really, the war is slow but I think I can up the pace to finish it sooner," He said, "I will try to surround the Capital and force a surrender, we are only 60 kilometers away."

"I hope you do," Cassidy said as she took a drink from her glass, "You are pretty absent in you-know-who's life."

"Mother, I know you are talking about me, and I have a name."

"Sorry, my dear," She said as Nami kept eating. She rubbed her head.

"But yeah, I want to keep the losses to the minimum, we only lost 36 in total the last tour, but I hope that we do better for the large cities, there are two we need to take and then we will be able to siege the Capital. Undritch should be able to help us with that."

"Who?"

"You don't know Uncle Undritch?" Nami asked looking up from her plate. Hugo glared at Omega and Sona.

"Ah, yes, I forgot about him, I haven't seen him in ages," Omega said, "How is he? What has he been up to recently"

"He is doing fine, still the same guy as he always has been."

"Glad to hear, has he found a wife yet?"

"Nope, he says he hasn't had the time to, business reasons."

"How was your day?" Cassidy said changing the subject, "How long did you stay at the beach?"

"We were there until 4, I fell asleep," Sona said, "But then we returned to our house then we ate and Omega slept a little, nothing much."

"Grandfather, you said something about you being one of the only Demonborn alive, what do you mean?" Nami said, interrupting Sona.

"Nami, I told you to stop interrupting, Sona was talking," Cassidy snapped.

"No, no it's fine, she is curious, let her be curious," Sona said smiling, "Omega why don't you explain what you meant?"

"Well," He started, "My father passed me this trait, it is passed down from father to son, never to daughters, you connect the dots, you should be able to."

She stopped eating and turned her head to Hugo. She blinked and then looked at Omega, then back at Hugo, then back at Omega. Omega nodded.

"So father is a demonborn?"

"Yeah, he is, he isn't very strong but he is a demonborn," He added making Cassidy and Sona laugh, "He needs to train more with me but with the war, he can't really do that."

"Is it true? Are you a demonborn?" Hugo nodded, "That's so cool."

"You sound just like your mother," He said smiling.

"Nami, time to go to bed," Cassidy said, "It is 8, here, come with me."

"Okay," Nami sighed and got off the chair, she took Cassidy's hand and they walked into the house. Omega and Sona looked at Hugo with annoyed looks.

"Who is Uncle Undritch?"

"Undritch, just Undritch, Nami calls him like that," He said shaking his head, "He is a banished Noxian, an ex-general, he was banished for smuggling, he offered to help us in the war."

"Do you trust him?"

"Not like I trust him completely but his banner is crossed," Hugo explained, "He was going to be executed and so he escaped and came here, to help us defeat the Noxians, I think he has reasons to do so."

"What help can he give?"

"After tomorrow, I will meet with him to see the plans of the cities and the details that they have about our troops, he stole a chestful of information that we could use, how did you guess the married part?"

"I didn't, I just assumed you would play along," Omega said, "Nami calls him Uncle Undritch, funny."

"Hey, I was talking with him when I went to get her, she asked me and I couldn't just say a friend, I wouldn't have gone to get her with him if it was a friend, so I said Uncle Undritch."

"You are funny," Sona laughed and took another drink, "Nami is a smart girl, she has the body of a 4 year-old and the mind of an adult, she soaks in information like a giant sponge."

"You taught her," Hugo said as he took a drink, "You taught me but I wasn't that smart, is she just naturally this intelligent?"

"More or less, I helped her but she did the rest with her addiction to learning more and more things, I bought her the school books so that she could do things that were more complicated and enjoyable than what she does in school."

"Enjoyable?"

"She bores herself at school," She says, "I help her do 12th grade things when she comes over."

"Why does she come over?"

"When I am tired," Cassidy said as she joined them once again, "Like when she can't sleep during the night, and I have to put her to sleep or deal with her being sick so often, that is why."

"Hey Cass," Hugo said awkwardly, "Is Nami asleep?"

"She is falling asleep," Cassidy sighed as she sat at the chair at took a drink, her ears flopped over her head, "It tires me so much, was it like that with Hugo?"

"Not really," She looked over at Omega, "He slept most of the time when he was young, he was rarely sick and often just played around with a wooden sword, he can even out skill Omega with a blade, I am not sure about now but he was one sword master, he learned from some of the most skilled masters in Terruna, he often surpassed them, after all, he practiced all day."

"Lucky," She yawned, "I have no energy when the end of the day roles in."

"You should get over it soon," Sona said still smiling, "I got over it after a couple years, after he could spend his day training his hand at the blade."

"Maybe you could show me some of your skills," Cassidy said, "I would like to learn something like that, I would have something to do."

"Sure."
