Walked down the stairs, alone. I slowly dragged my hand across the wooden handrail. I went down to the second floor 'till I arrived outside our classroom. Some were still answering the test and Kian wasn't in there.
I saw our teacher standing just beside the door, watching them finish the test.
"Sir, how many minutes left before the exam's done?" I said tapping his shoulder. "Not that much." He said as he looked at his wristwatch. "Around 5." He said as he put his wrist down again. "4 to be exact." He said.
Then I looked at the people who were there and it turns out that Cathryn was done. Well, she looked like she was almost done because she was running through her papers.
"You really improved, Nathan! Tell me, how did you manage to finish the test so fast?" He asked me. I hesitated to speak because my mind just filled with so much about Kian that I think I might cry if I speak. " Uh.. Let.. me.. just go to.. the um.. bathroom for.. a sec." I replied with a different tone than usual, my raspy voice became raspier and my eyes became watery.
I turned around and went running to the bathroom beside the stairway on the right that I went down on. All these thoughts inside of me just ran a thousand miles. And they never stopped
I opened the door and just burst to tears. "Please tell me that this is just a dream." I yelled but only echoes could be heard inside. No one else was there. I banged my hands on the sink and just yelled out of anger, regret, agony and everything else.
I looked at the mirror to see my reflection, but all I saw was a monster that was deprived from its own freedom and wanted to be free again. I monster that had been trapped for centuries.
I turned the faucet on and just listened to the sound of the water violently spraying against the marble sink. "The moment I wanted to be happy and this happens." I said to myself.
I cried while I had my hands laid on the sink and I cried. I cried just loud enough for it to blend with the sound of the faucet so that one could hear me.
I cried every inch of teardrop I could. I screamed, shouted. But it wasn't even nearly enough to fill the hole in my heart. I felt so empty. But my mind was full. Full of regrets, doubts and thoughts about how my life turned into this. A big, messy wreck that I never imagined would come to life.
Then I got back to my senses. I washed my face and steadied my breath. "Don't overthink." I said as I shaked my hands in front of the mirror. I looked straight at my dark, brown eyes and repeated it all over again. "Don't overthink. Don't overthink."
A couple of echoes and shakes after I went out of the bathroom. Then just before I passed the Grade 8 classroom, the bell struck loud and echoed to every corner of the building.
"Time's up. Papers everyone!" Our teacher could be heard from a certain distance.
As I passed through the windows of our room, they were already standing up, the teacher was going out of the room with a handful of papers. Then just at that moment, the people were already rummaging about the test.
I arrived at the doorstep and looked at them like a herd of chickens while they were fed. They stared back at me and little did I know that I had already started a stampede.
"Nathan! What were the answers to?... How do you solve?... Was it easy?... Nathan!" They said in chorus as I was on my back against the door while my eyes were as open as the sky.
"Wait what?" I said as I put my hands up and looked at my surroundings in panic.
"Mimv him am viv!" A muffling sound that can be heard that broke the noise. It was Hannah, our president so to speak, holding a bitten sandwich that I assume the chunk was in her mouth.
"What? We all said simultaneously as we tilted our heads to her.
She bent down and panted through her nose a bit like she just came from a marathon, she raised her palm at us while she was trying to swallow. We were still there, frozen at the door.
After a couple of seconds, she gulped it all the way down. She tookdeep breaths and straightened after.
"Give... him.. a break!" She said.
"Oh!" We all said as we nodded. Then they let go of me and went back to where they were earlier before I came in.
"What the?" I said as I came alongside with her on the way to our seats. She giggled.
"They're all scared of me. Face it. Haha" She said as we sat down and took another bite out of her sandwich. Which she gulped down after a chug of water that was conveniently placed on her table.
"Haha, anyways... Have you came across Kian earlier?" I said changing the topic as well as the mood of our conversation.
"Yeah, actually about that... Did he cry? Because his face looked like he had just came back from an allergy. Red in short.
"Oh... I don't know.." I said.
"What have I done?" I thought to myself with a combination of angry and afraid look on my face. "This is my fault." I added whilst staring at the sandwich with a mind of doubts.
"Hey? What's going on?" She asked while she waved her sandwich at my face. I was back to my senses. "Want some?" She said putting the sandwich in front of my eyes.
"Uh... No thanks." I replied after seeing the drool everywhere on the bread. Then my body shivered out of disgust.
"What happened?" She asked. "How about some water.." "No thanks!" I said that cut her.
"Fine, if you want so. Suit yourself." She said continuing to eat the... sand... wich.
