Chapter 3 - Finders Keepers?

The town had been abandoned in the last year and it looked like it was simply left though I had little idea why it would have been so I looked through everything that remained left behind. I searched building by building and eventually found a few little things that someone had forgotten and a dead body with a jeweled dagger stabbed into its heart which actually gave me a good understanding that the people who had left did not intend to come back ever. I pondered the reasoning behind leaving a place like this behind forever and I just couldn't fathom why they would get up and move for no apparent reason. I searched and explored the area thoroughly and found a few books that were in a style similar to how you would think medieval style books would look and then I found a couple scrolls that looked interesting and a chess set crudely carved out of wood that of course was before I found a very odd sight a room filled to the top with poorly made shoes which I dug through to see if I could find a set for myself. It was many hours into my search when I found a set of boots that would probably work for the time being though they weren't especially well made but anything was better than barefoot at least I hoped it would be.

After finally finding shoes I also found a set of somewhat small equipment that would work for me but the bag was more child sized and the pants were a lost cause not worth even trying to wear. So again I still didn't have proper pants but I ended up tying my blanket around my waist in a simple skirt and equipped with a jacket backpack full of books and small travel kit (mostly it was a flint and steel and a tinderbox) armed with a decent dagger and a axe head missing a handle I was probably a unique vision for the local wildlife which I could say were around heavily. I had never seen so many animals at one time I was constantly seeing one after another like some kind of stream of wildlife it was both interesting and disturbing.

After clearing out the town I set out once again only this time I was on better roads that looked like they could have been traveled recently though I was starting to get an odd feeling of being watched but I chalked it up to the constant flow of animals every which direction and simply continued on because if there actually was something watching me looking would only reveal that I was aware of its presence and possibly give away an advantage. It was some time in the afternoon that I came across my first living resident of this realm though calling him first is maybe wrong he was the first human I found but not the first living creature. The guy was in rough shape and looked like he had been in a fist fight covered in bruises that were a dark purple color the guy had taken a beating that was for certain but why did he. I kept the animals off him and gave him some water from his own canteen and mostly just staying by his side while he healed though it was by far slower than I might he did seem significantly better the next day. As I attempted to get the guy recovered I searched for anything useful from edible berries to leaves to cover him and it took days before he awoke and then he saw my crazy looking self.

If you wonder how he came to and saw me standing and his reaction well it went about as you would expect he literally started chittering and tried to crawl away and now at this point I'm listening intently trying to figure out if it's a language or something else so I'm listening intently mean while the guy gives up on crawling away and I see real tears welling up in his eyes. I was naturally confused and said " hey guy I don't mean any harm I just saw you laying here and not in a good way" he looked at me like I'd grown another head and stopped trying to flee and reduced his volume to merely whimpering.

It was at this point that I realized that I was not "complete" my body was still a albino white and thin as an African starvation baby with all of my bones sticking out in the worst of ways and I was dressed in a jacket and a blanket not exactly scary but odd at best and then there was the possibility that I wasn't even speaking his language so everything sounded like gibberish and then add me standing over him well yeah I cannot fault his logic after getting attacked in the first place. We had reached an impasse so I attempted to introduce myself and pointed at myself and said "joe" not my real name but I figured that if magic regeneration was a thing then giving out my real name was probably not something I would like to do after all were curses real in this world. My guest calmed down over a few minutes and finally said "ouch nag manasta" and pointed at himself from which I guessed his name was manasta which was pretty neat but it would be some time before I was able to make a proper conversation and understand what was being said so I kept at it "ouch nag joe" and he smiled at that and said "mada" which I took for good but I didn't stop and started enquiring as to what happened to him which took a long time to properly understand but eventually it turned out to be that he had been in debt that he was dragged out of his home in the middle of the night and beaten where I'd found him he had been left to die.

I don't know about anyone else but I couldn't just let that go it was against my morals to allow things like that to pass imagine if that was me no I couldn't let it go I had to do something what I was still wondering but I'd get there eventually. I spent the next few days learning to survive in the wilderness better than I had anyway and picking up various words of the language and even managed to keep myself much better fed than I had before. Better fed and with company I spent days with my guest Manasta though I knew that we couldn't keep living in the wilderness as my guest was starting to become thinner and pale if healthier than before. After he healed up enough to walk I had him lead the way as I had no idea where I was nor how to get him back to what passed as civilization and so he would lead and I would follow for what ended up being days before he collapsed. My guide Manasta had fallen ill but with a disease that he hadn't even mentioned almost like he expected to die it was both tragic and disturbing for me.
