Chapter 54 - Tree Travels [part 4]

On our way to the Sandman Kingdom we happened upon a small village. Sven's father, the leader of the crew, decided to stop by to "restock supplies", was his words but looking at the glowing eyes directed at the only inn in the village, I assume the main reason we're here is because of their desire to sleep on a bed instead of the cold floor. Not that it matters to me though, I'm just a plant after all.

We park our group of caravans on an empty plot of land near the inn. I latch my consciousness onto a seed I planted on Sven. I actually have multiple seeds placed on each member of the caravan. Multiple in case some of the seeds happen to fall off and all of the members just in case something happens a situation occurs in which a member gets lost or hurt and the other members don't know where they are. So I'm basically a sentient tracker...cool.

We walk along an uneven stone road towards the inn while I observe my surrounding. You can't blame me for acting like a country bumpkin, this is my first time going outside of Manbun's residency. The slanted houses are mostly made out of rotting wood, the windows are just square-shaped holes without glass. Looking in through the holes, I can spot a mixture of thin women, men and children in each residence. I assume we arrived at the town around lunchtime, because I can see some of the women cooking in barely recognizable metal pots over a fire, at the side of the house. That...can't be safe. The smell coming from the pot...makes me want to barf, no, it smells like barf. Yes, cooked, burnt barf.

But to be honest, those people have it better. In between the houses, concealed in the darkened alleyways, you can spot dead bodies. Or, that's what I though when I first spotted them, but taking a closer look I think most of them are alive? Barely...

Sacks of skin and bones lays intermittently between the rundown houses. Their sickly and pale complexion, plus that dead look in all of their eyes...at this point they could be considered half-dead.

This...what kind of conditions are these? What kind of monster is turning a blind eye to what's happening here? Depriving this town of basic human needs, how do they expect them to live? Who's in charge of this place and what happened to their humanity...
