Chapter 33 - Disgust

After entering the City, Fenrir knew that the first thing she needed to do was find a place to stay. Though she didn't require sleep, it would make her stand out even more if she was seen wandering around during the middle of the night. She also needed to avoid areas that were frequented by the various Clans and Sects, especially after seeing how people had been reacting to her presence upon arrival.

Fenrir knew from her Master's constant praise that she was very cute and, after her practicing [Mind of Still Water, Heart of Eternal Ice], her physical appearance had improved. This was the reason why she had chosen to wear clothing that covered her figure and made her look like a Mercenary, even though they were very uncomfortable to wear. However, given how people were already staring at her, Fenrir knew it would be even worse if she wore dresses, skirts, and shorts.

Since she wanted to avoid meeting some disgusting people that thought she needed to pander to them, Fenrir planned to stick to the districts where civilians congregated. After familiarizing herself with the city a bit, she would then go to the Mercenaries Guild and try to gather information. If would also be beneficial for obtaining an identity for herself, even though it didn't really matter to her if people knew who she was. However, she knew from training with Eva for those four years that being 'famous' or 'infamous' were ways to prevent some trouble from coming your way. Though you would likely be pestered by those wanting to make a name for themselves by trying to attack you, the majority of people would avoid trying to offend you. After that, the only thing you needed was personal strength and most troubles could be dealt with easily.

It took a little while, as she had been trying to familiarize herself with the city and avoid crowded streets, but Fenrir found a small inn that only costs 10 silver per night. Most of the coins she had were gold, so Fenrir gave the lady running reception a gold coin before being led to a small room that was around 5x5m with a screen door leading to a wooden bath. This world didn't seem to have the concept of using magic cores to generate electricity and, Fenrir was disgusted to find out that they didn't even have running water. The only way to get clean water was to draw it from a well and the only way to have a light in your room was to a glass lamp with a candle inside.

Though she had never experienced the advanced technology that Eva had talked about, Fenrir believed that it wasn't difficult to increase the standard of living so that everyone had clean water to drink. The fact that the toilet just had a long pipe leading downwards, without even any water to clean the basin, made Fenrir's dislike of this world much greater. Yes, she didn't need to rely on such things, as she had never used the bathroom in her entire life. However, the fact that so many Cultivators lived lavish lifestyles, while the people that 'served' them lived in such poverty, made Fenrir disgusted...

(Fenrir's Commentary: 'There are millions of people in this city, and they don't even have running water...')

(A/N: I know Fenrir might seem a little pretentious, but you have to remember that she is suffering from separation anxiety and had been raised in an environment where people always tried to help each other out. Even places like Maria's Orphanage, in the slums of Daedalus Street, had running water and proper waste disposal systems o_o...)
