Chapter 9 - Who Does She Think She Is?

Zhou Lengxin arrived at X-Nation Entertainment at precisely 8:00 AM dressed in a black bodycon dress and a grey blazer hanging off her shoulders. To look a bit more professional, she swapped the usual black cap for a beret, but she still wore the signature black face mask and sunglasses.

She dropped her things in her office which was conveniently located adjacent to the recording studio.

Her breakfast arrived a few minutes after. Every morning she ordered breakfast delivery from a nearby dim sum place that was sent to her office where she would eat behind locked doors.

Making sure the door was bolted, she pulled down the mask and glasses.

"Mmm."

Her teeth sunk into the fleshy softness of a meat bun. Meaty juices and flavor exploded into her palate, pervading her taste buds with relish. The hot and tender buns and the subtle tart sweetness of soy milk were part of the classic Chinese breakfast.

She took a glance at her watch, 8:42, a few more minutes before she would have to make her way to the sixth floor and endure four hours of boredom.

Her office was on the tenth floor, so she rode the private elevator four floors down.

The private elevator was reserved for artists and important personnel whereas, the rarely used VIP elevator was for the President and Vice President and other esteemed guests.

"Hello, Director. Hello, sirs."

Director Ye was already sitting at the head of the meeting table with a few investors and company representatives.

Minutes later, a flood of people in professional attire filed into the room, each sitting in their respective seats.

The director started the conference with a long speech about his plans and expectations and yadda yadda. Zhou Lengxin did not pay much attention throughout the whole thing until her name was mentioned.

"...she will temporarily be under Miss Zhou for the project. We plan to cast Miss Zheng as the third female lead, Shen Mumu."

"But Director," one of the investors opened his mouth to protest, "wouldn't it be better to cast an experienced actress for such a big role? There are many that wish to work with you! We can also draw in more investments and hype this way."

"I never used big names to hype up my works, I want talented actors who fit the character, not who's popular." Director Ye's voice turned extremely chilly at the one who dared to question his arrangements.

The atmosphere turned a bit awkward. After that, no want spoke out of turn.

"The cast list will be officially released tonight at six. I hope we can do well. And with that, let's conclude our discussion here. You are dismissed."

A rummaging off papers and chairs as people got up and talked among each other as they exited.

"Miss Zhou, a moment please."

Director Ye handed her a large file, "Here is Zheng Hualian's resume and many others. Pick out a manager and assistant for her, alright? If she gets successful, we'll add more to her team. Work hard."

Director Ye was a really strict and straightforward person! But she still gracefully accepted the papers and thanked him before leaving.

"Who's that? Why does she wear a mask, is she a celebrity?"

"Hmph, there are many big stars at our company that don't wear masks inside! I don't recognize her, who does she think she is?"

'They must be new.'

She was long used to whispers about her, but most people here knew of her, even if she wasn't from that part of the industry.

Zhou Lengxin made dead eye contact with one of the gossipers who stuttered mid-sentence under her direct gaze.

The girl turned away and stopped speaking while her friend just sneered and rolled her eyes.

To outsiders, she appeared very cold and aloof, but within the dorm, she could be herself. So why should she care about what they think?
