Most undead couldn't move during the day and some couldn't even leave their deathplace for long. The Kingdom's Gate system security made it impossible for them to use it without getting discovered and establishing one of their own was impossible for them.
Undeath made them lousy Forgemasters due to the inability to properly channel the light element. Creating a Gate, carving it with runes, and infusing it with a spell powerful enough to bend space through hundreds of kilometers of distance was more than any of them could do.
Their only hope was to get their hands on a pre-existing one.
