Chapter 3 - 3 YOU’RE AWAKE?

When Carmila mumbled these words her body flew into a fit because of the trauma she'd been through earlier. Outside the room Damien and Suraj heard some sudden noises coming from the room and entered followed by an on call nurse who was working the night shift.

The Nurse injected her with a sedative to help her calm down, Damien assisted the nurse in checking her vitals to see if she calmed down and made note to get her a series of exams for any trauma sustained.

She relaxed soon after and the nurse who's name was Lily told Damien that she would take Carmila to the examination room as soon as she woke up, after saying her piece she turned to leave. Meanwhile Suraj called Carmila's parents who were comforting Jessie's family and explained that he was with Carmila at present and turned into a video call so they could see her despite the state she was in she looked rather calm now in her sleep, her mother Marcia couldn't keep holding her tears anymore and let them flow as her husband took a handkerchief to wipe her tears. On the side Damien was listening to the beginning of the conversation only when he saw that it turned into a video call he stepped a few feet backwards to give them space, not seeing what he was still doing in the ward he glanced at Carmila and turned to leave when Suraj interrupted him the moment he touched the door knob, "Damien are you leaving already? I wanted to introduce you to the Avoca's, seeing that you helped their daughter" he said whilst looking at him then he turned to face the camera and spoke "John and Marcia this is Dr. Damien Vaughn, at the crash site he had been there to assist Carmila and brought her to the hospital. He is my close friend's son and a phenomenal doctor. I just wanted you to meet him."

After hearing what Suraj said they looked at Damien and saw a kind looking young man. John cleared his throat at this moment and said in a sad but strong voice, "Thank you for saving our daughter at such a difficult time. It's been very devastating to both our families. I don't know if it would be possible for a transfer but if it can be done, please let us know as we'd love for our daughter to return home to be closer to us". Damien was at a loss for words at first when he'd heard the word "saved" seeing that he hadn't done much but assist, he then went to say "There is no need to thank me as I've only done what is required in our domain of work, as for the transfer after her examinations are completed I will let Mr. Suraj know. Rest assured your daughter is in good hands, but I apologise I must get going as I have a series of Doctoral sermons to attend to and promise to be in touch with you as soon as your daughter is awake from her sleep and I hope she recovers soon. My sincerest condolences for your loss as well" he said the last bit with concern. Marcia then squeezed her husband's hand said in a low voice "if ever we can repay you please let us know, what you've done for our dear Carmila is heartwarming. We won't hold you for too long, but thanks again for assisting our daughter and we'll be waiting to hear from you". Damien simply responded it was not necessary for any repayment and he did this because he had to assist whenever possible in any case and left there after.

Suraj spoke for a while more and disconnected the call. He looked at Carmila who slept soundly and turned to head out. He called Lily and told her he would head to the cafeteria and would be back in an hour, in case if something happened he left his contact number to get hold of him and made his way to the cafeteria.

Moments later when they were all away, Carmila's eyelids fluttered open slowly as the ceiling light blinded her view for awhile and gradually adjusted to the lighting, she looked around the room which was pale white and there was a faint smell of disinfectant lingering in the air, she looked at the machines on her left hand side and noticed she was connected to an IV drip and also connected to a heart rate monitor. To her right side was a bedside table with a vase filled with yellow and white daisies and a window, opposite the door was a two seater grey couch. Looking through this room she hadn't noticed that Nurse Lily walked in, "You're awake?" She said gently so as not to startle her and added on, "How are you feeling now? I'm Nurse Lily Wang you were admitted under my care after your operation." With a kind smile she looked at Carmila hoping to not make her uncomfortable or anxious.

Carmila stared at her for few seconds before responding in a hoarse and dry voice "I'm just in a bit of pain on my neck and back but I'm fine, thanks for taking care of me." Lily walked closer to Carmila with her warm smile and said "You're very lucky you survived, it was a very tragic occurrence."

Just as Carmila thought everything really did happen and was not a nightmare at all.
