Chapter 34 - Weekly Appointment

While An Qi was explaining her relationship with Leng Jin to An Yufei, the Leng Group Building's underground warehouse was undergoing an unprecedented transformation. The Leng Group's Engineering Department had never been tested so severely. Not only was every staff member on duty, but the group also temporarily transferred staff members from other companies in the city to help with tonight's task.

"Shi Zhiwen! Why are you in such a daze? Where is Boss Leng? Why did he disappear without any reason once you arrived?" Sheng Jie asked in a huff.

After all, he had come all the way from the underground warehouse to the top floor, as he wanted to report on the progress of the project to Boss Leng. However, when he arrived, he only saw Shi Zhiwen in the office. He could not withhold his temper, so he had lashed out at Shi Zhiwen.

"Boss Leng just left. He should be on his way to the warehouse now. Didn't you see him on your way here?" Shi Zhiwen responded softly, while he leaned on the sofa and crossed his legs. He did not seem to be bothered by Sheng Jie's unreasonable behavior.

Sheng Jie was so angry to see someone dare make himself so comfortable in Boss Leng's office, so he asked angrily, "Do you know that there are at least ten elevators operating in this building at the same time, and that Boss Leng has his own exclusive VIP elevator? So… Why would you assume that I would have seen him as I made my way here?"

Shi Zhiwen turned a deaf ear to Sheng Jie's reply as he drank a cup of tea, played with his phone on the sofa, then said casually, "Oh, then you had better go catch up with him."

These words almost drove Sheng Jie to his grave. "What do you mean? As Boss Leng's newly-employed bodyguard, why are you still sitting here?" The more Sheng Jie looked at this young lad, the more Sheng Jie disliked him.

This young lad was clearly just a bodyguard, but what he said and did was all quite out of the ordinary! Even Sheng Jie did not dare to be so presumptuous in Boss Leng's office, so he had to wonder... Why is Shi Zhiwen so arrogant as a newcomer?

The more Sheng Jie thought about it, the angrier he became. He then rushed towards Shi Zhiwen, as he wanted to pull his collar and drag him down to the underground warehouse with him.

However, just as his fingertips gently swept past Shi Zhiwen's collar, Shi Zhiwen stood up and dodged Sheng Jie. His speed was so fast that Sheng Jie could only catch a glimpse of Shi Zhiwen's shadow on the sofa!

At this point, Sheng Jie figured that he had no chance of winning. Moreover, Shi Zhiwen obviously had no intention of continuing to grapple with Sheng Jie.

"I think there may have been some misunderstanding between us. When Boss Leng was alone with me in the office just now, he briefed me on my job responsibilities. If I understand correctly, I have only one task, and that is to protect this girl named An Qi. Other things, including the safety of Boss Leng, are not in my scope of responsibility, do you understand?" Shi Zhiwen asked as he pulled out a picture of An Qi from his jacket pocket and shook it in front of Sheng Jie.

He then added, "Also, I hear you are one of the few good hackers in the city. Let's make a bet and see if you can find out my identity within a week. If you can, I promise that I won't embarrass you in front of Boss Leng in the future."

After Shi Zhiwen finished speaking, he put away the photo and returned to the sofa. He then brewed a new pot of tea.

Sheng Jie was so angry with this arrogant newbie. But, even though he was so frustrated, he knew that he was no match for him. Moreover, this newbie had the support of Boss Leng!

Also, from Shi Zhiwen's high level of self-confidence, Sheng Jie began to think that he was more than just a bodyguard. Otherwise, with Boss Leng's wisdom, he would not trust an outsider easily.

"Sure! Let's bet!" Sheng Jie clenched his fist, frowned, then agreed to Shi Zhiwen's proposal.

Shi Zhiwen then replied casually, "Well, I'll be looking forward to the results in a week."

At the An family's old house…

"That's what happened, An Yufei. Your mom knows that you are eager to have a father. But now, I just want to focus on raising you, then leave all of the other things to fate. So, you can rest assured that Mom and Uncle Leng Jin are just partners at work." An Qi exhaled a long breath after explaining all of this to An Yufei.

She had seen An Yufei's longing for a father for quite some time now. In fact, there had been several times when she had opened the iPad and seen search results for "Three people in a family," "Why I don't have a father," and "Where did I come from?"

The situation was somewhat unique, as An Qi did not know exactly how to broach these subjects with An Yufei. Every time she wanted to talk about such things, she would start to shy away once she looked into An Yufei's innocent eyes.

But, since at the moment, her whole upper body was covered in her clothes, thus blocking her line of sight from looking into An Yufei's eyes, An Qi was finally able to broach the topics naturally.

It almost felt like there was no seniority between a parent and child at all. An Qi was able to think of it more like a conversation between friends. But, in An Yufei's eyes, An Qi's way of handling this conversation was more like an ostrich with its head in the sand when it was met with impending danger!

It seemed that, since An Yufei had matured, she had to deal with her mother's carelessness every day, and gradually, An Yufei herself could clearly feel the difference between her and the other children around her. As such, she began to be reluctant to socialize with children her own age.

This was because she always felt that there was a huge gap between her and them. Most of the time, she preferred to stay in a corner and study alone.

This was especially the case during these past two years, as An Yufei's learning speed had been amazingly fast. When An Qi went to work, An Yufei would sit down with a book for the whole day, absorbing all of the knowledge within it. Moreover, she was gifted with an extraordinary memory.

An Yufei would sometimes look at An Qi's silly mind and think to herself that her mother's IQ could never produce such an amazing memory like hers. So, the only possibility was that An Yufei's biological father must be a genius with an excellent IQ!

With a clear and crisp click, An Qi suddenly felt a release on the previous pinching sensation she had just had on her head. It seemed that An Yufei had been able to unfasten the hairpin that was stuck on her clothes after all!

An Qi moved her stiffened arm and pulled herself out of her dinner outfit. Then, she saw a slightly disappointed expression on An Yufei's face.

"An Yufei, are you okay? Did I say something that upset you?" An Qi quickly took An Yufei into her arms and rubbed her soft hair.

An Yufei allowed her mother to embrace her. After all, no matter how silly her mother was, she was still the closest person to her.
