If you place an M&M in a bowl full of skittles you'll never see the difference. However, when you truly begin to inspect that M&M or when you finally taste it you notice that this isn't what you asked for.
I am that M&M sneakily hiding among the fruity Skittles and just hoping no one notices my dissimilarity. At first, I never even noticed that I was that M&M. But when you're surrounded by constant power, you can't help but become aware. When everyone else became attentive to my difference, they changed. Friends, I thought I had, abandoned me, others began to bully me and from there it just got worse.
By the time I reached middle school, I was a constant target by my classmates, teachers and sometimes strangers.
It had gotten so bad, I had refused to go to school or even leave my room. I hadn't eaten in days, I was depressed and miserable and...
I just wished I wasn't born.
But my mom, my sweet, supportive and lovable mother, motivated me with stern yet kind words, "Remain positive Naomi. Just because you're treated like you're weak doesn't mean you have to be."
Years later and I still go by that philosophy.
Little did I know that this thinking would get me into trouble.
