Nona leaned back,
"I'm not interested in marriage. At all"
Her friend laughed,
"Even with the handsome Eguchi"
At that she blushed, but then rested her face on her hand.
"Marriage is… Well it's like you said. Everyone has secrets. Even if we get married i may not tell them everything and they might never tell me everything."
She played with the cake on the plate.
"That scares me."
"A psychologist named Beth easterling and some colleges researched why we keep secrets from our spouses. And they found while not everyone keeps secrets a majority do and even then it varies in severity."
Nona took a bite and swallowed,
"Okay but shouldn't we be honest with one another? I mean let's take Daigo, if it turns out he is a mental case isn't that something we should address early on?"
"While you would hope yes the truth is that there were two major reasons on why people kept secrets. The first… we don't want to hurt our spouse or the relationship. If coming out with a diagnosis makes you want to break up your partner may keep it a secret similarly if finding out you've been cheating on him hurts his feelings you might keep that a secret."
".... I'm not cheating. I'm not even in a relationship with him!"
"Regardless that is one of the major reasons"
Nona sighed,
"Okay and what's the other reason?"
Her friend smiled,
"Because society tells us to be honest"
Nona sat up,
"Wait a sec. If society tells us to be honest then shouldn't that deter secrets?"
"Society tells us to be honest, tell your spouse the truth, open your heart. So what do people do? They lie. They say of course they are being honest, truthful, this good person is who i really am and that bad person you see sometimes is not the real me."
Nona had no words. Her friend just laughed,
"And sometimes if you lie so much… it becomes the truth."
