A few minutes of fast-paced dancing and many laughs pass. We both plop down onto a cushioned couch. I glance over to see my once-was dancing partner looking off into space, he seems to be thinking about something quite serious. He catches me staring but he doesn't tease. "Why did you decide to become a King?"
"Why?" I ask him, he nods. "I guess I just didn't like being at the bottom of the food chain. I hoped it would've been easier at the top."
"You used past tense, why?"
"This," I motion to our surroundings, "Isn't what I thought it would be. Every person you meet sees you as a tool or a threat. If anything, I'd say there's a few more steps to climb before we're at the top."
Vie's eyes widen. "How much higher can we climb? I mean we are Kings."
"I don't know. To the elders, a king is just a tool that can be thrown away at a moments notice. I heard that before a long time ago, way before the Everstar turned red, there was a government called a monarchy where the king's word was law. If the king died, his position was passed to one of his kin."
Vie's face held no visible emotion. "I bet chaos reigned back then. Many people would die over petty things."
"What do you mean? If there was one ruler than there would be no internal conflicts."
"But what if the people disagreed with the ruler's decision?"
"The ruler would listen to their opinions."
Vie sighed. "N, no ruler is perfect. Some are greedy or selfish. Most in fact." We sit in silence for a few minutes.
"Well, I should hope not." I say, shattering the silence.
"Why is that?"
I stand up as a new song begins to play. "Because life would be boring then!" Vie just laughs and takes my outstretched hand. I drag his towering figure to the dance floor as we begin to sway to the upbeat rhythm.
The song comes to a close as we head back to where we sat just a few moments ago. "Let's play a game."
"A game?" I retort. "And what game are you thinking of, Mr. Blue King?"
Keeping the mood light, he hums as if thinking and taps his chin. "How about we tell each other something about ourselves that may be false or true."
I laugh. "But it is a game worthy of kings?"
He falls back into the couch, looking take aback. Overdramatic some. "Well I should hope so, as it was a king who devised this game!"
"And what king would that be?" I scoff back at his overdramatic antics.
"Well me of course!" We both laugh for a few minutes. "I'll start! Let's see...I've never had alcohol before!"
"False!" I declare, I mean, in this day and age that's practically impossible, heck I had my first wine when I was seven!
"Wrong, I have yet to taste any liquor!" I quickly motion over a waiter and take two glasses of wine from him.
I wave the glasses in front of his nose. "I can change that~" I say in a singsong tone. He takes the glass from my hand. "Cheers to new things!"
"Cheers indeed!" A foreign voice intrudes, he dares to invite himself to a conversation between kings?
