The next week passed at a surprisingly fast pace, as everybody was kept busy dealing with the aftermath of the attack.
Families of deceased soldiers and researchers had to be notified.
The base had to be cleaned up so the rebuilding could begin. The research base was shut down and erased from record as it wasn't a sanctioned project, to begin with. Decisions were made for Eddie and Jason to adopt Dino as he had no records and a child appearing randomly in a military facility would raise eyebrows and create suspicion.
The official story was that Dino was the son of one of Eddie and Jason's childhood friends, who grew up in the same orphanage alongside them. The story was completely airtight, as most of the facts in the story were true. They did in fact have a childhood friend they had grown up with, but that friend had disappeared; officially anyway. The unofficial truth, that only Eddie and Jason knew, was that their friend was a special forces soldier, who was currently deep undercover, in the organization which they believe was involved in the recent attack on the base.
A day after the attack, Eddie woke up. Finding himself in a strange room he freaked out and began to attack the soldiers on guard. By the time Jason and Dino got there, there were at least 20 or so soldiers battered and bruised or unconscious. You have to remember that despite Eddie being a Doctor; he was originally a soldier and a good one at that. So good in fact, he could have become an Admiral if not for the fact that he decided to become a doctor instead.
Seeing Jason and Eddie his outburst was quickly put to a stop. He automatically began to help the soldiers up, while trying to apologize. They couldn't help but laugh at his change, from the war machine that had single-handedly decimated them to the apologetic bumbling doctor, that was now helping them up.
Now knowing Eddie was awake Dino left the room while Jason explained the situation and what had happened after he had passed out. He also showed him the security footage from inside the facility, footage that Dino didn't know he had.
In the footage, it showed Dino carrying Eddie through what could only be described as a warzone. Stepping over bodies of fallen soldiers and researchers, taking on his attackers with ease, all while keeping him safely protected on his shoulders. The efficiency in which he dispatched his attackers was something that shocked Eddie. Dino's speed and precision was something only seen in highly trained operatives; even then, some weren't as skilled or even possessed the skills Dino had demonstrated.
This brought up questions which couldn't be answered with simple deductions, especially the scene which played out in the lobby. Eddie repeatedly played the videos over and over again. After watching them 4 or 5 times he paused to think. Turning to Jason, Eddie gave him a look. Jason knew exactly what that look meant 'Get rid of any and all evidence'. Using his Admiral level security clearance, it was done.
Though Jason couldn't help himself from asking "Why?"
Eddie released a sigh.
"Do you have any idea what you have just witnessed?"
Jason shook his head. Despite being an Admiral it was always Eddie who had the intelligence and common sense in their friendship.
"What we just witnessed is, a child no older than a week old, who looks like a 10-year-old, destroying mercenaries that have been trained for most of their adult lives with very little effort, and that's before we mention whatever the hell happened in the lobby...."
Eddie had to take a breath.
"...Just saying it makes me sound like I'm losing it. Can you even begin to imagine what would happen if the wrong people got a hold of this?"
The cogs in Jason's mind began to turn. His eyes widened as he started to realize just how much of a shit storm this could create. Then a thought struck his mind.
"Wait? You don't think?"
Eddie just nodded.
"The attack on the base? It was all to get the research?"
Jason asked in shock.
"It would appear so. Though thankfully they had no idea that, that research was walking around right before them and killing them off one by one...."
Eddie paused contemplating his next words very carefully.
".... but that raises another problem. Someone within our ranks is a traitor."
Palpable fury could be felt from Jason. It was then a new voice could be heard and with it, all of Jason's fury vanished; though a frown was still visible.
"Well, there's no point in worrying about that."
"And why is that Dino?"
"Because I already dealt with him earlier. After I came out of the tunnel."
Confusion followed by understanding flashed through Jason's eyes.
"The soldier who mouthed off to you?"
"It would seem you catch on fast."
"But how did you know?"
Dino smirked before looking at Eddie.
"I'm a super soldier remember. Everything is enhanced, my senses, my mind, even my instincts."
Eddie frowned.
"That still doesn't explain it." He stated.
"The guy smelled like the other scumbags."
"That's not a reason to suspect him. He'd been fighting them for a while, it's normal that he'd smell like them." Jason spoke up.
A playful look appeared in Dino's eyes.
"Hmm... And you don't find it strange that despite the close-quarters fighting, he had little to no blood or dirt on him."
"Well..."
"Or the fact that all of the Mercs he fought were going easy on him."
"Maybe..."
"Or the fact I heard him communicating with them and then trying to kiss your ass, so people would think he was a 'Loyal soldier'."
Jason quickly gave up.
"Okay, I get your point."
Eddie couldn't help but let out a little chuckle, which quickly garnered him a glare from his friend.
"So where is he now?" Eddie asked curiously.
Dino chuckled to himself.
"Hmm... If I'm not wrong, he's currently being interrogated by the other soldiers?"
Both Eddie and Jason's eyes widened.
"They'll kill him if they know he's a traitor." Panic was evident in Jason's voice.
"Oh... They do." A cold growl was released from Dino.
"We need to stop this before they go too far."
"You don't need to worry about that." Dino stated.
"And why's that?" Jason asked agitated.
Dino simply retorted.
"Because I told them not too."
"And why would they listen to you?" Jason almost roared.
The room became cold.
"Because..."
A pressure fell upon the room as Dino's killing intent filled it.
"... they fear me more than they what to kill the traitor." Dino's eyes glowed as he spoke.
A silence descended in the room.
Dino took a deep breath and calmed himself. Shortly after he smiled.
"Well, then shall we go and see what's happening?"
Both Eddie and Jason forced an awkward smile before they nodded.
The three of them made their way towards traitor's cell. Two of them worried about what they may find, while the third was anticipating what he might find.
