Chapter 4 - Punchline

"600…700...800...900."

Miranda was counting her gold. She walked back under her pillar and immediately initiated Homebound. Every avatar had access to Homebound permanently for free. After channeling for eight seconds the avatar would instantly appear back on the Revival Platform, but the channel could be interrupted by almost anything. Which was why Miranda walked all the way behind her pillar.

The Telekineticist backed first to Justin's delight. Now that she was gone he could push his minion wave into her Pillar meaning that she would miss the experience from all of them dying. After pushing the wave in, he went to back as well and bought his trump card. Even basic Purge cost most of the gold he had earned so far, but it was worth it. It could removed all debuffs on him when he activated it, but the cooldown was very long. Still, it was essentially a get out of free card so that his gunslinger could attack without fear.

Justin arrived back in lane to find the Telekineticist trailing far behind her minion wave as usual. As he moved into her vision from the fog of war past his Pillar, she backed up. Way up. All the way back to her pillar. He casually tapped at the WASD keys moving into prime position behind his minion wave. Realizing she was being too scared, the Telekineticist came back towards the minion wave. This was perfect for him. With them both being level 5 he would hit level 6 first and be able to go kill her with his ultimate ability and the safety of purge.

She circled her arms raising her left towards the sky. It was her first skill that wasn't Force of Will, Levitate. The point and click spell Levitate would force him to hang in the air for a half seconds. If he hung in the air she could then use Force of Will to grab him. But even that wouldn't do much damage. Whatever she was trying to do, it wouldn't work.

Purge!

A shimmering cocoon appeared around the gunslinger as it started to leave the ground and he instantly crashed back down as if he had never left. He jammed the button for Fire on the Run charging forwards through the minion wave with guns blazing. If she tried to Force of Will he would then use the Void Walk on his amulet to instantly appear a short distance away or Slide Shot to dodge. Either way it didn't matter, she would be dead to his attacks and Rapid Fire.

Except that he didn't charge forwards with guns blazing. The moment the gunslinger leapt into motion the Telekineticist appeared on the other side of the minion wave. His side of the minion wave. Waves of glittering pink shot from her outstretched arm ensconcing Justin's gunslinger. What was the point of using Force of Will when she was right in front of him? He would stop right in front of her and then murder her with his guns.

He waited patiently to arrive in front of her. It should have taken but a moment but suddenly he found himself being dragged through the minion wave. To her. The Telekineticist awaited him right at the base of her Pillar.

But how? That was impossible! As the only enemy in range the Pillar fired an energy bolt at him dealing a large chunk of his health. Finally he was right in front of her so close their two avatar could practically be kissing. He whipped around and instantly Void Walked. He would only have to take one more Pillar shot before slide shotting away with over half of his health left. The moment he reappeared he took the Pillar shot as planned and then things didn't go as planned.

The Gunslinger turned around and started walking back toward the pillar. Justin couldn't do a thing to stop it. Turnabout? When did she use the ability? He never even saw the animation for it! Yet at this moment that was the only thing he could come up with that could cause what he was seeing on his screen. A line skillshot that somehow collided with him the moment he appeared. Turnabout caused the enemy to turn around and move in the opposite direction than when they were hit for a number of seconds equal to its level.

Following a standard build path Turnabout should be a level 1 spell right now. That meant he would eat one more Pillar shot before he could slide shot to safety. The Pillar shot hit him and he hit the button for Slide Shot. Again nothing happened. She leveled it up to 2? Odd, but that was still fine. It would still take two Pillar shots to kill him. Another second. Another press. Another disappointment.

She leveled it up to 3?! What the actual f*ck? Nobody bothered doing that! That meant that her Force of Will was still on its level 1 cooldown, the longest. That and her Levitate was also level 1 meaning he would have hung in the air a half second, practically thrown up and tossed back down. He watched with dismay as his gunslinger strode confidently forward. The Telekineticist punched him in the face and the Turnabout wore off. But it was far too late now. If he used Slide Shot he would still end up taking one Pillar too many. He pressed the button anyways and exactly as anticipated the Pillar fired on more time, the shot following as he ran out of range with Fire on the Run.

[You have been slain by Fleeting Chance (Telekineticist)]
