Chapter 28 - Chapter 28

Jane was already awake by the time Deborah and Eddie arrived. She was seated with Catherine in the living room discussing. When she saw Eddie, she bolted from her seat and ran towards him. He fell in her warm embrace, when he barely had time to process what was happening.

"I thought I would never see you again." She cried.

"Especially when you had me killed."

"I am very sorry, Eddy." Jane cried. "I can never do anything to hurt you. Whatever happened, happened with someone else's will inside me. I hope you understand. I also want to say sorry for what I did before, you of all people deserved nothing of what I did."

"You were quite sure when you declared that you were uncomfortable and could not do this anymore, or when every time we met you eluded me, like I was never your friend…"

"For all that, I am sorry. Eddie, just know that I never stopped loving you. You have no idea how each hour every day I wished you were beside me.

"Then why did you…"

"I had to." Jane released her arms and lowered her head in embarrassment, "It was the only way I could stay alive. At least, when alive, I had the hope of having what we had in the past."

"What do you mean, Jane?" Eddie lifted her face and wiped the tears off her cheeks.

"Our hosts, they brought us here to heal and to know them better. After we are from this place, I will let you know everything."

Eddie stared at her for a long time before asking, "Promise?" "I promise." She nodded in assurance.

Catherine had long gone to the kitchen to fetch food for the four of them. Eddie sat beside Deborah, opposite Jane who was separated from him by a wooden table. Even if he tried, he could scarcely keep his eyes from her.

"Deborah, I have known Catherine for a very long time, how come she has never spoken of you or the Green Wyvern?" Eddie asked with a frown as he swallowed the contents of his mouth.

"You did not need to know. After all, will you believe me if I tell you I also knew Jane before you and because of her I wanted you dead in the past?" Deborah looked at him playfully, the spoon in her hand stopping halfway to her mouth.

"Is this true?" Eddie looked at Jane doubtfully.

"I had known Deborah even before we joined University of Noya. However, I had no idea she wanted you dead. Maybe, she should explain that to you." Jane answered shyly, taking a towel to wipe the soup that was accidentally flowing down her lower lip.

"I was jealous," declared Deborah, "she was my girlfriend and you took her away from me. I am one who is used to killing. Whenever my path is crossed, death is what I send to the trespasser. With jealousy driving me almost to insanity, thank the gods I did not find an opportunity."

"What made you stop?" Eddie asked.

"Green Wyvern. He found her even before she did anything." Catherine replied, her eyes darting from Eddie to Deborah.

"Yes, He made me understand the magnitude of your responsibility. Taught me how to love you just like I loved myself. It took time but he succeeded. At first, he wanted me dead but he saw a gift in me which he also taught me how to use later and through it, I have healed many people."

"Deborah, why do you still kill when it seems you already make a good money out of your gift?" Eddie could not understand.

"I was an assassin long before I met Jane, Catherine and Green Wyvern. When he taught me how to use my gift, I stopped. However, the assignment to kill you would pay me a huge amount of money. Furthermore, once accomplished, I would be free from a debt I owed the leader of the organization and that was the reason I took it in the first place."

"Are you free yet?" Jane asked.

"Sooner or later, they will learn that I failed. The reason I was given this assignment was because I turn out to be a good assassin and the debt binds me to my leader, there was no way I could say no. Once completed, I was to be set free. I still feel the bond, meaning that somehow, they have already known I failed."

"Deborah, can't Green Wyvern help?" Catherine looked concerned.

"It tried but the spell binding us is too strong even for the dragon's powers. Besides, Green Wyvern is hardly a dragon, its powers are greatly limited."

"Then, is there anything I can do?" Eddie asked.

"Now that you are here alive, there can be no limit to the number of possibilities. For now, though, it seems I will still be bonded to my leader unless he decides to set me free. I am afraid he may use this bond to force me to do terrible things. Green Wyvern told me once you are anointed, it may be possible to save me. Until then, we will wait."

"I still haven't known how you and Catherine met." Eddie smiled.

"Eddie, Green Wyvern's family had been living with my family since times unknown. He was born when I was only five. Somehow, for reasons unknown to us, he became my friend. when I left my home, he decided to leave with me. He was the one who introduced me to Deborah and together we built what you already see."

Satisfied for now, Eddie pulled his plate closer to him. He lifted his head to look at Jane with a sigh before he started eating a little quickly. Until they all cleared their plates clean, silence accompanied them.
