Kai and Jax circled each other, analyzing. They knew each other so well, which only made it harder since they knew each other's strengths and weaknesses.
Jax struck first, he put his right arm behind his back, wielding his sword with his left. Kai easily dodged the first two strikes before countering. He caught the sword mid swing with his two daggers. The bigger boy, Jax, attempted to overpower the other, but two hands were ultimately better than one. Kai pushed the sword to the side and struck at Jax, who evaded.
They continued to fight for a good half hour. The two were exhausted. Kai started to falter first. He slowed down, his moves becoming sloppy. Jax pressed his advantage and finally achieved his victory after another 15 min.
Jax stood over Kai, breathing heavily. He frowned, disapointed. "You went easy on me. Even though you explicitly told me you wouldn't..."
Kai sighed. "I thought I did pretty well in hiding it? I mean, we fought for maybe an hour."
"You're barely breathing hard," Jax pointed out with a glare, "Here I am, wheezing, and you barely broke a sweat."
Kai stayed silent and Jax grew angry at him. "Why!? Why did you go easy on me? Why couldn't you just let me lose?" His voice trailed off as tears threatened to fall from his eyes.
Kai could almost hear the unspoken questions. 'Why did you let me do this to everyone in the first place? Why didn't you stop me? Why can't you let me atone for everything by killing me? Why can't you let me die...?"
"It's because I'm selfish," He admitted, "I didn't want to get involved in the drama. I told myself that it was for Kaia, but that was just an excuse. Truthfully, this was always for me. Everything was always for me. I- I tried. I tried to take Kaia away. Aaron too. But they refused." Tears streamed down his face. "Kaia left me. And I couldn't do anything to stop her. And now she's dead. And I want to blame you! I want to tell myself that it was all your fault. I want you to suffer. I want you to live on with the guilt. To make you go through hell. I- I'm so selfish." He broke down. Sobbing on the floor.
Jax hugged him. He felt his own face getting hot and wet with tears. He didn't care about the battle anymore. It wasn't what truly mattered. What mattered was his friend. His friend who had lost his twin sister. His frien-
He was cut off mid thought. A piercing pain shot through him from his side. He stood up and stumbled backwards, falling on a fallen comrade. Kai walked over to him and bent over, removing his daggers from Jax's side. Blood rushed from the deep cuts, causing Jax to gasp in pain. He stared at his wounds that seemed to overflow with endless color. He shifted his eyes to Kai, asking a question. Why?
Kai wiped his two daggers on a a piece of clean cloth, dyeing the pristine white a dark crimson. He glanced at the cloth in disgust, tossing it away.
He then took time to study his victim. Truth be told, he hadn't thought his plan would work. Everything had seemed so cheesy and rushed. His very words and actions had made him want to cringe, a feeling he didn't often have.
The life slowly faded from Jax's eyes. Seeing at his fallen friend, Kai felt no remorse or guilt. However, he knew he should at least tell him something, leave him without regrets, something like that.
So, he said, "It's because I care about you. I don't fault you with the murder of Kaia and Aaron. I wasn't lying when I said it wasn't your doing. I was careless, and now I've paid for it. The reason I've done this, is because I want you to be happy. The sooner you die, the sooner you get reincarnated. And besides, I know what's going to happen to the one of us who doesn't die. And it's something you wouldn't be able to handle, shouldn't have to handle." He left it at that, realizing that Jax was now completely dead.
Kai viewed the large expanse of corpses in front of him. They held a putrid smell of blood and sweat. The air mingled with the many scents of the individual men and women. He plugged his nose with his fingers, hoping to block the aromas. He waved his hand and spoke a chant. The majority of the corpses gather together, where they burrowed into the ground. Kai used magic to cover the hole in dirt and smoothed it over.
Saying a quick prayer, he wished the best for his fallen allies. Now it was time to get serious.
Kai had already made his decision before all of this had started. It was the most reasonable, if painful, choice of his three options. See, the number of people he had just buried was in no way few. Reaching up to 20,000, he and Jax had just incapacitated the entire human army. Which was kinda unfair considering they were supposed to be the main force going up against the demon army.
Now that they were dead, Kai would take up arms as the only remaining 'hero' in this world. With Jax and his sister dead, Kai was the only 'chosen one' left. That meant that it was his responsibility to defeat the entire demon force.
*You know, this would've been a lot simpler with an army. Nice goin there Jax. Honestly, Kai's not the only one clueless as to the reason that they were chosen to be the heroes. They kinda sucked. I mean, Kai was a type two psychopath, Jax wasn't exactly loyal to anything but his friends, and Kaia was a spoiled brat. Come on, author! Could you get some better protagonists please?!*
Ahem, anyways. Kai knew what he had to do. So, after building a small gravestone for the resting place of his friends, Kai went on his way.
