Chapter 4 - So They Meet Again

Surprised by the sudden cry, Bo Chin almost sprained her neck by turning it too fast. She quickly ducked her head out of embarrassment and let her eyes glance upwards to see if anyone other than her saw her embarrassing moment. Just in that moment, she felt a sudden swish of air pass above her head, cutting off a few strands of her silky hair. Tracing the object passing by her head with wide opened eyes, her view landed on a sharp dagger embedded into an empty market stand behind her. Thinking of the way it could've ended if not for her tremendous luck, she felt a slight shiver run down her spine. But instead of looking frightened a hushed chuckle came out between her lips, unsettling the very few people around her who happened to have seen the incident. Bo Chin noticed the frightened looks directed towards her as well as them flinching and edging away as soon as she made eye contact with them. If only they knew she was actually feeling just as nervous as them. Putting aside their stares, Bo Chin quickly turned her attention towards the uproar, that attracted a huge crowd in the middle of the marketplace. Surrounded by onlookers, she saw a man she recognized to be the one from the forest, standing before an angry mob of extravagantly clothed youths. The group of youths' countenance was pulled into a frown and fury was evident on their face as well as in their stance. Unsurprisingly they were the ones causing the commotion by shouting out curses. Bo Chin looked on curiously without even considering to intervene, wondering on how the man she remembered was named Chen, would react to this provocation. As she observed him, she noticed that although he seemed unbothered on the surface, he was clenching his hand into a tight fist, seeming to hold himself back from raising it to punch someone. Someone, most likely being the people in front of him.

"Are you done? If you are, stop making a ruckus and move along. You're acting like an embarrassment." Words spoken with utmost spite flowed out of Chen's mouth, his face slightly twisted in a frown. "Embarrassment?! That's rich coming from a bastard like you. That you even dare show up in this city is an embarrassment." Watching the show for a few moments, it seemed but a pointless quarrel to Bo Chin. She'd seen scenes like this too many times already, so they didn't catch her interest any further. What she turned her thoughts to instead, were the origins of the knife. At first, she thought it was the result of the commotion going on inside the circle of the crowd. But although both, the group and the lone man were verbally berating each other, they didn't seem to act in physical violence. There wasn't the slightest of signs that one of them had thrown a dagger at the other. Realizing this, Bo Chin's eyes sharpened and she suddenly looked back in search for the dagger, only to find that it had disappeared, leaving only a deep hole in the empty market stand to tell her she wasn't just imagining things. She'd obviously missed her chance to find out anything about the person seeming to target her. But that didn't mean she didn't have a hunch. Although she admittedly built up quite the range of enemies in the years she wandered around in her willful manner, not all of them had reason enough to go out of their way and harm her. The most suspicious one in her mind was naturally also the most recent enemy she made. She was a seeker of knowledge without caring to keep her research hidden. Though she also didn't deliberately publicised her gathered knowledge or her search of it, she also wasn't secretive about asking for clues about anything on her mind. It was more convenient to ask around then to search for everything on her own. But her unreserved attitude leads to her becoming the target of the people who wanted certain knowledge to be kept a secret. Her newest interest was coincidently also part of a mystery kept hidden for hundreds of years by a notorious family line. They were one of the oldest, if not the oldest royals of the country and were envied as well as admired by the general public. The head branch of this family also just so happened to be located in X city. It wasn't Bo Chin's first time encountering something like this, but she took note to tread carefully from her on. Although she wasn't very careful with her life, she also didn't want to lose it for a foolish reason. With that in mind, she weaved through the crowd of people, wanting to head on the other side of the commotion. But who would've thought that just as she seemed to get past the chaos a shocked visage with a red nose would suddenly appear before her feet?
