Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Several Elders gathered in the nursery as the goblin children surrounded them, anticipating the trials ahead. As 7, 2, and their group gathers among the crowd the elder who named them stepped forward.

"It's time for the trials."

The elders then turned to leave after beckoning the horde of goblin children to follow. No further explanation was given as the mass of goblin kids were led through a winding tunnel. As they neared the end a faint light shown, the first light the young goblins had seen. One 7 recognized as the light of a starry sky, and as they drew closer his expectations were confirmed. The first night sky of his new life, the first steps into a greater world. 7 heard the gasps and exclamations of his fellow young goblins who were finally seeing something other than their nursery cave. It was only a moment later that the group fully emerged from the cave and what lay before them was a world new to all save the elders. Even the wise 2 and reincarnated 7 were left speechless at the sight before them. The group stood somewhere in the middle of the green mountain, at a point where neither the top nor bottom were visible and a dense cluster of trees obscured much of their view. It was then the Elder spoke once more.

"Welcome to the Green Mountain, find our tribe and join the gang or die in the process."

The Elder then looked over the group his gaze lingering on a few individuals including seven before commanding the still gathered group to "Go!"

The goblins paired off in their groups immediately thereafter, some went up, others went down, and more still lingered in the small clearing outside the cave. Noticing their hesitance the Elders scoffed and went back into the cave. This action seemed to dash the hopes of those who lingered hoping for the Elder's guidance.

It was now time to make their move and 7 along with the rest of their group looked towards 2.

"Where to boss?"

"Hmm, well goblins like caves, they like to be close to travel routs, and far enough away from them that enemies give up pursuit. So both the very top and bottom of the mountain seem unlikely and it's also unlikely to be too close or this wouldn't be much of a trial. Let's scout the surrounding area first and go from there."

"Alright."

7 and the group having no better ideas proceeded to follow 2's lead into the forest.

As they scanned the surrounding area the signs of the groups before them littered the ground along with various animal tracks they'd never seen before. As their surroundings were quickly surveyed the group proceeded down the mountain. The occasional animal noise sounded in the distance without revealing their sources apparently scared off by the goblins. At this time 7 had a seemingly odd expression on his face as he realized how truly different this world was. The trees resembled none he'd seen before save they were tall with bark and leaves while the animals he heard sounded only slightly similar to any species he could recognize. The others in his group had similar expressions if for different reasons with each sight and sound being as new to them as it was to 7. Even 2 with his innate wisdom had only a slightly greater understanding of their environment. Thus the group walked on occasionally jumping at sounds or marveling at a new sight all the while it seemed they were being avoided by the mountain's fauna. Then the air grew silent, no distant noises penetrated their ears and even the snap of twigs and the crunch of leaves barely registered as a primal fear settled among the goblins. An aura none could see the source of was following them, watching, waiting, hunting. The urge to flee was barely restrained by the group as 2 attempted to steady the group. His efforts were unfortunately wasted as 7 saw several shadows flit through his peripheral vision only to reappear as dark green feline-like figures. They stood slightly taller than the goblin children but they far exceeded the goblins in size. The felines had features similar to leopard with more pointed features and joints along with tails of varying numbers. The one in front had 3, 3 others had 2, and the remaining 2 had 1. While 7 was the first to notice them the others quickly realized their situation with 2 silently cursing under his breath before saying a name.

"Gilva Leopards"

The three tailed Gilva Leopard then let out a heartrending roar quickly echoed by the surrounding leopards. The Gilva leopards slowly moved towards the group pressing them into a tight group. 7 clenched his fists as his eyes scanned the Gilva leopards before turning towards his group of unarmed untrained goblin youths. It was 12 vs 6 but 7 knew their group didn't stand a chance. At least not all of them but 7 was fearless and not the type to let children die in vain.

"Sigh"

'Guess it's time to see what skill levels are truly worth.'

7 finally resolved stepped to the front of the group motioning 2 and the others to stand behind him. As the Gilva leopards drew closer and fear etched itself upon the goblin children 7 muttered in a quiet voice.

"I really am an idiot."

Then flashing a quick smile at the huddled goblins 7 dashed forward towards the three tailed Gilva leopard. A booming shout resounded from the barely two foot tall goblin that was 7 as three tailed leopard seemed momentarily stunned. A situation 7 immediately exploited ramming the three tailed leopards legs in a burst of speed. Throwing the three tailed leopard off balance and startling the others. Seizing the moment 7 began treating the leopard as any number of foes from his past life, free to be bruised and battered at his pleasure. It was no stretch to say the 7 the leopards had provoked was a little green monster. His fists flew with such fury that the beast before him despite being stronger and faster was left with reprieve. If it tried to escape right it was beaten left, if tried to get up it was beaten down, and if it wanted help the other leopards didn't dare. The other goblins were similarly shocked including 2 who couldn't believe what kind of monster he recruited. 7 continued to bludgeon the leopard with a level experience and skill that should've been impossible for a goblin fresh out the cave. His actions gradually began to fill the other goblins with confidence as the goblin children all seemed to share the same thoughts.

'Who cares if these Gilva leopards are scary? Who cares if we're small and inexperienced?

Isn't that one of us pummeling their leader? Why can't we pummel them too?'

Brimming with a mix of courage and idiocy the goblins charged at the remaining leopards who were a step too late in reacting. Still distracted by their leaders fate at the hands of 7 the remaining leopards were mobbed by the goblins that managed to bring the low before the leopards could utilize their advantages in strength, speed, and experience. This however was only possible because of the outlandish display of 7 pummeling the three tailed leopard that captivated the other leopards attention. With the early advantage the goblins struck wildly with neither skill nor grace but a zeal spurred on by 7's display. However despite this advantage and the damage they inflicted the young goblins were outmatched with the leopards retaliating in storm of teeth and claws. The goblins were barely holding on, scratched, bitten, and bleeding their blind faith in victory quickly faded. Until 7 stood up knuckles bloody, a fire in his eyes, and a broken three tailed leopard beneath him 7 once more threw himself into the fray. He broke legs, busted skulls, and battered the leopards senseless. A scene that would've shocked many played out as the Gilva leopards could only see a green blur that struck together with the remaining goblins to pummel them. When they weren't being struck by 7 they were restrained by the wild goblins who struck with reckless abandon. The battle continued on for only couple moments more as the leopards last thoughts were surely filled with indignation. Seeing the Gilva leopards crumpled beneath them the goblin group nearly collapsed with exhaustion the sound of their ragged breathing and the smell of blood both leopard and goblin filled the clearing. The goblins had won their first fight and 7 the reason for it all stood there silently seemingly distracted by something.
